Jindal: "I've learned my lesson"
Gov. Bobby Jindal admitted Tuesday that he blundered in allowing legislators to pass a bill that would more than double their base pay. However, Jindal said he still plans to allow the pay raise to become law. Vetoing the bill would give legislators a reason to reverse his initiatives, including changes to the state’s ethics laws, he said.
The pay raise is presenting the governor with the harshest criticism since he took office six months ago. He has until July 8 to veto the measure. Many are suggesting that a veto is the right response for a governor who characterizes himself as a reformer. But Jindal said he does not want to spark a battle with legislators.
“I don’t want to give the Legislature any excuse to slow down the reforms we’ve started. I don’t want to give them any excuse to throw sand in the gears,” he said.
Senate Bill 672 by state Sen. Ann Duplessis, D-New Orleans, would benefit the lawmakers currently in office by increasing their $16,800 annual base salary to $37,500. Legislative leaders — such as the speaker of the House and the president of the Senate — would get more money. Legislators also get a $6,000 expense allowance and $143-a-day per diem payments for every day in session or committee.
Jindal vowed during the gubernatorial campaign last year to “prohibit legislators from giving themselves pay raises that take effect before the subsequent election.”
Asked Tuesday whether he will keep his campaign promise, Jindal said he told lawmakers he would give them latitude during the session that just wrapped. The governor said he wanted to make the regular session the legislators’ session after the back-to-back special sessions he called shortly after his inauguration. For the most part, he said, that latitude worked. It did not work on the pay raise, Jindal acknowledged.
The bill has sparked a public backlash. A recall petition was launched Tuesday against state Rep. Joseph Lopinto, R-Metairie. There also are efforts to oust House Speaker Jim Tucker, R-Terrytown, from office.
Approval has been granted for a protest rally to be held at the State Capitol on July 7. The controversy is getting national notice.
In the future, Jindal said, his administration will be more involved with the session by issuing veto threats and by speaking up when bills go through committee.

I'm not sure you have learned your lesson, Governor. It appears to the educated voter that you made a deal with the devil -- you'd turn a blind eye and break a campaign promise if key members (vote swingers) in the legislature would promise to give you what you wanted. You don't really think that bunch of scoundrels (yeah, those who just voted to double their own pay -- not the pay of the NEXT legislature, but THEIRS) is going to honor their pledge, do you? You need to grow a pair and honor your campaign promise -- VETO THE BILL. The voters will punish those who were behind or complicit in this enormous pay raise. By the way, why isn't it a conflict of interest to vote YOURSELF a payraise? It's a conflict and incredibly unethical on every Board of which I am a member. Is that your plan? To let them take the payraise and then charge them all with ethics violations? Come on, Bobby. Be the man you told us you were going to be. VETO!

I tried to tell everybody that you cannot put a man in office just because he "says" something. We had no voting history from this guy. Why did everyone think he was so great? Yes, he's smart! Yes, he's a great speaker! Yes, he SAID he has new ideas. Think about this: Why do people like Obama? He's smart! He's a great speaker! Yes, he said he has new ideas! DO WE WANT HIM AS PRESIDENT? At least we have a voting record for Obama. Jindal was too busy running for Governor that he didn't vote much. We really need some good candidates. We'll know if Jindal is a man of the people or a good ol boy soon. He only has a few more days to veto the pay raise.

All politicians lie. That is nothing new to the American public. They say what they have to say to get elected. Just as Barack Obama and McCain are doing now. Don't believe for a second that what they say comes out of their mouth or mind, it's written for them by their "handlers"
It's time we put the fear back into politicians and this veto vote will do it. We have to veto at least a couple of members to show that the people are serious and that politicians will face a terrible price when they do not listen to their constituants.
People called and wrote to their legislators asking and begging them not to go through with the pay raise increase. That it was to much and not the right time. These legislators should be working for the people but they basically all gave us the middle finger and voted for the pay raise.
Sure, people need an increase in pay. I know money is not handed to me at my job and I can't go to the bank and just take it out just because I think I deserve it. I have to work for my pay raises as they are based on merit. It is also a full time job for me where these legislators are part time positions. They now make more in a part time job than most of the middle class in Louisiana do in a full time job. Louisiana is last is just about every other catagory except the pay of their legislators.
They want to brag about what they passed while in session but I went through them all and most are stupid. If you want to brag, go through the other thousands of Louisana laws and remove or rewrite them. Adding new laws on top of laws just paves the way for more lawyers and politicians and loopholes.
We are like a bunch of children under most of these laws which were made because people no longer have common sense and they sue for everything after which some idiot judge awards them millions which then requires a new law.
If you do not see that the legal system, government system, court systems are broken, then you are blind to the world. When 4 out of 9 supreme court justices vote against allowing people to have a gun in their home for protection (which is in the constitution) then you know we are heading down the wrong path. One more liberal judge on the supreme court would mean that they would start rewriting the constitution and you, the people, would start losing your basic rights as an Amercian citizen.
It's time to send a message to Congress, the Supreme Court, and all politicians that they work for the Amercian people. We shouldn't fear them, they should fear us. Btw, there is a quote from V for Vendetta, the movie, that about this that is true. "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." Watch the movie, that is what we are headed to. Dictatorship.

Also, if you don't think Congress is out of touch with reality. These people live in million dollar homes with maids and bulters yet they are making decisions for the middle class Americans? They don't care about gas prices. They could afford to pay $10 a gallon which would then be passed off to the American people because they are driving back and forth to congressional sessions. Congress has the lowest approval rating in history but all I hear in the current election is that it is all President Bush's fault. It's really OUR fault for electing everyone currently in Congress and the white house. Blame yourselves for going along with a broken system. We are cattle and they are the ranchers. They do not live our lives or have do battle our battles yet they tell us how to live and when to fight. We need to wake up as a people. Limit central government and turn power back over to the states which is what our founding fathers wanted. If you don't wake up soon, American will only have one state and it will include Canada and Mexico in an effort to strenthen the American dollar which is what Europe did. Government will do this without even mentioning it to the American public

There's still time for the VETO, and Farmhand72. We all have the right to "bitch" as much as we want. Why don't you go tell your cat to stop bitching then you'll get what you want, silence. Jindal had his mind made up by the La legislature. Jindal is just another puppet to rich special interests.

Jindal came to his senses and vetoed the pay raise. It takes a big man to admit he made a VERY public mistake.
Duplessis says she won't try again to get it passed.
HURRAY for Louisiana voters who wouldn't back down on this issue.

I love how many resigned yesterday so that their finances would be made public.
I think Jindal did the right thing. He did the thing he said he would do when he was elected to office. It's about time we held people accountable.
There are still some legislators who are very upset and said that they lost all confidence in Jindal. They need to be removed from their legislative positions, immediately.
