I Need Honest Answers

My hopes are to retire in the Quitman/Valdosta area in 2012. Why there? My parents were from the area and we always had to go "home" for the Christmas Holidays and as an adult I grew to like what I saw esthetically. But we all know that looks can be deceiving.

I've been reading a lot of forums regarding the area, online newspapers and have been visiting at least once a year to rekindle friendships and familiarize myself with the area more. It seems that crime is becoming quite prevalent there and that is one of my reasons for leaving Philadelphia not the mention the weather.

How safe do you all feel living there? Also, what are the average utlitity costs per year? In essence what do you spend annually a year on taxes, car insurance, etc. I'll be on a fixed income of @$31,000 a year and will most likely have a mortgage looking at homes in the $175,000 price range. Are there any gated communities in that price range?

Wish I could help you ...But I am bed ridden and dont get out much... Ive lived here for 10 years and I have always enjoyed the town and the people.

Theirs always a few bad apples here and there, but being from florida, I would say it still holds it small town appeal...even the small town gossiping hens (he ha,,, Just making a joke) But really, I think we have a nice town compared to others
