I worry now if my children are safe with anyone here and if I need to worry if my grandchildren will be safe around anyone here. I have read very few uplifting, forgiving , understanding, tolerant, words written here just people trying to make their ideas understood by bludgeoning each other over the head with such ugly nasty things said about and to one another I am ashamed that the people of this city have come to this type of behavior. Christians who are judging, people who say they stand for civil rights, all of you allowing yourselves to be brought to this level of nastiness is ......just a shame there are some who, for whatever reason, do not discuss or debate ideas in a civil manner. evidently this is noted throughout our history; sadly it seems to be increasing.

Gay Mom wrote: Churches that embrace this attitude are fundamentally unchristian. Jesus said , "love your neighbor" and they definitely do not. Has nothing to do with being love. It has to do with being qualified for a job or a promotion. Why do you think you do have to follow the same rules as the rest of us? If you want something, work for it like everyone else. It shouldn't be given to you just becasue of your bedroom preferances.

Yes, the bottom line is that throughout our history some Americans have been against women's rights, civil rights, inter-racial dating, and as now gay rights. It starts with a majority but as people's awareness is raised, changes come about. Wasn't the bible used in those other cases as well? I'm trying to find which passages were used for the other groups. Oh, and especially in this part of the country, kids probably will be dating to be seen fitting in, while learning about themselves. I wouldn't go by that, but then I'd support my kid either way. I doubt if most really come OUT til later on.

After four days and about 20 hours of deliberations, a weary federal court jury on Monday announced for a second time that it was deadlocked in the case of a former Memphis police officer accused of beating a transgender prisoner in 2008 One female juror, who asked not to be identified, said later that the verdict was 11-1 in favor of guilty. McRae, who carried a Bible on Monday, said he was placing his faith in God. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Another Trans Woman of Color Shot in Memphis http://likeawhisper.wordpress.com/2009/06/02/... Denton is the 5th trans woman, 4 of whom were African American twoc, to be shot in the area in 2 years. Hate crimes in the state have gone up 38% this year and slightly less than half of that increase is against GLBTQ people. The TN Transgender Political Coalition is also once again calling for the State Legislature to pass an amendment to civil rights law for the state that would include “gender identity or expression” in protected status alongside race, gender, religion, sexuality, etc.

Willie Houston, of Memphis TN, murdered because someone thought he was gay.. We recognize that few people are abused, harassed, beaten, or murdered solely because of their sex or sexual orientation but because they are perceived as violating the socially prescribed gender for their anatomical sex- of males being insufficiently masculine, etc. This is the common thread uniting violence against women, gays and lesbians, and transfolk.1 A tragic example: in 2001 Willie Houston of Memphis, Tennessee was shot dead because his murderer believed him to be gay. Mr. Houston had just stepped off the Opry Mills music showboat and was holding his fiancee's purse while he helped a blind friend into the men's room. His attacker shouted anti-gay epithets, chased Houston to a parking lot, and shot him in the chest while Houston tried to reason with him.2 Willie Houston was not murdered because of his sex (male) or sexual orientation (heterosexual) but because he was perceived to be doing a form of gender (femininity) inappropriate for his sex. Willie Houston was the victim of a gay bashing even though he was not homosexual; he was the victim of gender-based violence even though he was not female. His murder illustrates an important truth about gender-based violence: though males represent the overwhelming number of perpetrators and victims of violence, it is not being male that's the problem. The problem is subscription to a culturally dominant form of masculinity that celebrates violence and enforces conformity through the threat of physical violence: taunting, bullying, assault, murder. http://www.faqs.org/periodicals/201001/196446...

Churches Say City Non-Discrimination Resolution Is Dangerous From the article of this thread. “During Sunday service Bellevue Baptist Church Pastor Steve Gaines urged the congregation to tell their council members to vote no . Gaines said the resolution is dangerous and a big concern since there is no exemption for churches that might do business with the city. Just what is he afraid of?” Gains needs to worry about his own problems…. Assistant DA Says Pastor's Failure to Report Sex Abuse Could Be a Crime http://www.ethicsdaily.com/news.php... An assistant prosecutor said Bellevue Baptist Church Pastor Steve Gaines may have committed a crime if he knew the "moral failure" a church staff member confessed to him six months ago involved child molestation. All 50 states have laws requiring mandatory reporting of suspected child sexual abuse. Tennessee requires any person, including ministers, with reasonable suspicion that abuse of a child has occurred to report it immediately. - - Bellevue Investigates Minister for 'Moral Failure' http://www.ethicsdaily.com/news.php... "Whatever the reasons for why Gaines chose to protect Williams instead of protecting kids, they aren't good enough," she said. Brown said "a dog may get one bite, but a minister doesn't get one kid," adding that Williams "should have been removed from ministry and reported to the police immediately." "When it comes to child sex abuse, once is more than enough," Brown said. "You don't wait to see if it's going to happen again."

The murder against Willie Houston happened in Nashville, TN. It didn't happen in Memphis, TN. It was very sad when that happened many years ago.
