This is one of the worst accidents I have ever seen with my own eyes. When I arrived at the scene as the 3rd or 4th vehicle all that came out of my mouth was OMG, OMG and I just kept praying that what I was looking at was not real, There were people getting out of there cars to help the wounded men, There was a gentlemen on the ground and another in the black vehicle. I did not want to park and stare I wanted to move out the way and make room for police and Ambulance That I knew would soon be there. I was hoping to hear that both men were okay and it's a shame to hear one has passed on. My prayers go out to you and your family.

I agree with Andy to a certain extent: you reap what you sow. I'm sure that the dead chap had people who loved him, but not enough to tell him to drive like a law abiding adult.

And no, I won't be missed when I'm gone.

I did not want to comment on your ignorant opinion... But I am very happy that others did tell you what a mean old man you sound like and I hope nothing like this ever happens to you or your family by the way Elgin/Streamwood is a suburb and not to near Chicago.

To all who commented about the poor drivers....

How do you think that 2 cars managed to get so destroyed (car parts scattered all over the place)? By following traffic laws?(As usual the Tribune leaves out almost everything)Were one or both speeding to show what their fancy luxury speed-mobiles could do and then one or both lost control?

I feel bad for their families but IF either of them were being stupid then I'm glad they won't be around to kill or maim someone innocent.

Don't you have anything else to do? Why don't you go look for another accident to tell us all about. What would we do without you.

One or both of the drivers did something stupid and one is dead. You say you're glad? You're glad someone is dead??? You can be glad that Idi Amin is dead. You can be glad that Adolph Hitler is dead. You can wish Osama bin Laden dead. But to be glad that someone who did a dumb and dangerous thing is dead is really heartless and, quite honestly, sub-human. Let's hope no one you love ever does something dumb.

I live near this intersection. People drive too fast here and are inattentive. The speed limit on Route 19 drops from 45mph east of Schaumburg Rd to 40mph west of Schaumburg. People don't reduce their speed. Also, because of the curve and the slight grade to the road, visibility can be obscured, though I am doubtful that is what contributed to this accident. People also run the stoplight at Rohrssen & 19 pretty often. Folks are too slow to reduce speed when coming into Elgin and are in too much of a hurry to increase speed when leaving.

Sympathies to families on both sides.

Hope the Trib follows up on this one. Too bad so much "reporting" is so lacking in the basics: who, what, why, when, where.

That's right...now there's the possibility that there is one less dumbell out there to HURT OR KILL SOMEONE I LOVE BECAUSE THEY FELT LIKE BEING DUMB INSTEAD OF RESPONSIBLE!!!!!
I'm supposed to feel regret? I will feel regret if/when the full story comes out and they say the guy that was killed was an innocent victim of the other driver...until then, you can call me sub-human and YOU can be thankful that someone YOU love wasn't a victim of their being DUMB (translated---IRRESPONSIBLE)!! !!!

You sound like a five year old stamping his foot, saying "I'm glad he's dead, the meanie". Why don't you swing by the funeral to offer your condolences and say "By the way,*whew*! Sure glad he's dead so he won't harm others by being irresponsible". As an earlier poster stated "You reap what you sow". And I agree. It's not the fact that you say he was irresponsible and his death was to be expected based on his behaviors. I don't expect you to feel regret over his death (if, as you imply, he was the cause rather than the victime of this accident). It is that you say you are "glad" someone has died that makes you sound sub-human. To be glad in the death of this individual is truly soul-less.

I actually agree with Andy, not just around downtown Chicago, but the suburbs as well.
I moved here from Georgia, and drivers here in IL are nuts (no offense). People are almost always going way above the speed limit, namely on the expressways. 15-25mph over the speed limit is not uncommon. Weaving in and out of traffic going 80mph+. No flashers/blinkers when turning/changing lanes. And this happens along local roads too.
And also the endless tailgating even when you're going the speed limit.
Drivers flooring the lights when it hits green yet knowing the light down the road is red. What's the point? A waste of gas.
No offense to anyone, but that's what I've observed so far 2 months living in Schaumburg and commuting to Joliet. My co-workers, many of whom have lived here all their lives, have agreed...they poke fun at me that I'll end up turning to the dark-side.
Everyone here seems in such a rush...whatever happened to "stop and smell the roses"?

Obviously the people who are extremely callous have never seen someone die in front of them. Until they have, perhaps they should keep their opinions to themselves.

I'm not sure how, but I suspect bike messengers caused this crash.
