Thank you to whoever gave me the invitation to come to this forum! My name is Betty and I live in Elgin and work in downtown Chicago.

I am currently looking for families to host foreign exchange students in the NW Suburbs-Schaumburg, Bartlett, South Elgin, Hoffman Estates, Bloomingdale, Roselle, Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, St. Charles, Geneva, and South Elgin. Our students come from all over the world in the ages of 15-18. They stay for the academic year, and we have students that stay for half a year, but most stay for the whole acaemic year. You are only responsible for providing them a room to sleep and meals. Everything else they pay for. We also have several activities throughout the year for students and their families to participate in. If you would like to learn more or know someone who would be interested, please email me.

Check the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students for tips. The U.S. Department of State proposed new federal regulations for sanctions and termination of exchange placement agencies that do not comply with local, state and federal regulations and that includes Homeland Security Issues so be careful if you don't know what you are doing. Check the Internal Revenue Service 990s for the agencies and see revenues(in the millions), directors etc. Know who you are dealing with. it is free on Guidestar.org , use advanced search and scroll down to the 990s

I would be interested in hosting a foreign exchange student in my home. I also have a teenager of my own, who would enjoy the company! We would both like to learn Spanish, so that would be our preference.
I was also wondering: are there any programs where the student pays rent? I'm not looking to make money, but to cover some of the overhead.
I live in St. Charles.
Thanks!

Hi, Mark:

I saw your post regarding hosting international exchange student. I am a volunteer for Youth for Understanding (YFU), and we have several great students who may fit the bill. One I can think of is from Mexico, others are from Brazil, Germany, Finland and Switzerland. If you are interested, we could chat and I could send you a few brief profiles to get-to-know some of the students. Basically, a host family needs to provide a bed for the student to sleep on, three meals a day and a place to study. They should pay for other expenses.(I don't know of any programs in which families get paid to host.) I was a foreign exchange student myself years ago to Brazil, and I learned so much, and so did the family who hosted me! You and your son would have the experience of a lifetime! Let me know if you want to talk about particular students a little bit. Students come in August for the school year, so touch base with me soon if you can, at debragentry@hotmail.com.

DM Discoveries
International Student Exchange
Hello,
I am the regional manager for DM Discoveries (DMD) a long established and well-respected non-profit student exchange organization.
DM Discoveries is listed with by the Council on Standards for International Education Travel (CSIET) and has been designed by the US State Department as a teenage exchange visitors program issuing J-1 visas.
The presence of international teenagers in our schools and community enhances education and provides the opportunity to develop friendships that plant the seed of future peace and understanding. By host families providing room, board and the special opportunity for a student to become an active member of their family, they will bring a new knowledge and attitudes to the people around them.
I am sending this letter and biographical sketches in hopes you will or someone you know would be interested in hosting a student for the up coming school year. Consider opening your hearts and home to a student from another culture.
I am looking forward to hearing from you. Please visit our web site a www.dmdusa.com . Should you have questions I am only a phone call away.
Sincerely,
Mary Helen Carter
Regional Manager

Daily Horoscope for May 18

Aquarius

Watch out if you're going shopping, because you'll be tempted to splash out on impulse buys. This doesn't matter so much if you're feeling flush, but it could cause problems if you're supposed to be counting every penny. Whatever the state of your finances, you may buy items you don't need and possibly even won't like when you look at them again tomorrow.
