From what I understand of a broken neck the majority of the time it results in paralization or death. I could be mistakin'. Again the subject is being changed. The point to alot of these comments is the LEO's should be held accountable for their actions. I don't think we should dismiss these cases just because the suspect had "drugs" in his system or was acting oddly. These LEO's should be trained better. I personally would pay more taxes to ensure our LEO's are thinking more about the people that are paying their salary than they are of their own egos.

Deputy suspended for allegedly Tasering wife

Last Edited: Monday, 07 Jul 2008, 9:51 AM EDT

BRANDON - A Hillsborough County deputy has been suspended without pay after he allegedly Tasered his wife and put a gun to her head.

Investigators say Deputy Carlos Tanner had been drinking Sunday evening when he got into a fight with his wife. Tanner, 38, allegedly pushed her onto the bed and Tasered her three or four times, leaving Taser burns on her stomach.

Tanner then grabbed his service weapon from under the mattress and held the gun to his wife's head for 10 seconds, investigators say.

Kristine Tanner fled to a friends house while deputies arrived at the Tanner home and arrested the 10-year sheriff's office veteran.

He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and placed on leave pending a review.

Taser Falls 11% As Jury Awards $6M For Stun-Gun Death
Posted by Tiernan Ray

Shares of stun-gun maker Taser (TASR) fell almost 12%, or 80 cents, today to $6.10, after a district court jury in the Northern District of California said that a drug suspect arrested in 2005 died in part because of muscle contractions from simultaneous blasts from three Tasers used by police officers. The jury ordered Taser to pay the victim’s family just over $6 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The officers in the case were exonerated of any wrongdoing, Taser noted in its press release concerning the verdict.

The company’s chief counsel, Doug Klint, said the facts do not support the adverse judgement, and he said Taser would appeal, and intended to pursue other possible actions, including “a motion for a new trial, judgment notwithstanding the verdict.”

This is the first product liability suit the company has lost, notes Dougherty & Co. analyst Gregory McKinley in a note today, after beating all 69 previous raps. The jury found that Taser had not properly warned about the effects of extended duration blasts of the guns, notes McKinley. He expects the $5.2 million in punative damages will be an accounting charge taken in Taser’s June quarter, and that it will total about 5 cents per share, so he’s now modelling a 1-cent-per-share loss for the quarter, below the 4-cent-per-share profit consensus estimate. McKinley’s “Buy” rating on Taser stock is a mixed bag: he sees a possible $1.75 million contract from New York City as the use of Taser is broadened to more officers, and there’s a possibility of broader “infrastructure” investment this year, that could boost adoption of the device. But it’s also possible that municipalities will crimp spending. And after the verdict,“investors will assume heightened operating risk in the Taser model in the short-term.”

Tasers can cause cardiac arrest: heart specialists

Updated Wed. May. 21 2008 8:23 AM ET

The Canadian Press

VANCOUVER -- Two heart specialists told an inquiry into the use of Tasers on Tuesday that a jolt from the weapons can "almost certainly" cause heart problems and possibly even sudden cardiac arrest.

And a senior police officer who trains others on how to use the Taser said his training from the company that manufactures the device suggests the Taser does not lead to cardiac arrest.

Dr. Michael Janusz, a heart surgeon and professor of surgery at the University of British Columbia, told the inquiry that based on his study of available literature on Taser use, "almost all physicians would conclude that Tasers can induce ventricular fibrillation."

The hearing was told ventricular fibrillation is an extremely rapid rhythm in the heart's lower chambers, leading to ineffective contractions of the heart.

"In summary, Tasers almost certainly can cause cardiac arrest in humans, particularly in people with underlying heart disease," Janusz said.

A spokesman for Taser International has told the inquiry that Tasers are not risk free and that the term "non-lethal" does not mean safe.

Taser International has maintained there's a big difference between a Taser jolt causing death and contributing to death.

Staff Sgt. Joe Spindor, of the New Westminster Police Department, told the inquiry Tuesday his Taser training is based on what he was taught by Taser International.

"The information we receive is that it's safe to use on subjects," Spindor said.

He said he hadn't heard of Janusz's opinion on possible cardiac arrest.

"No. I've actually heard the opposite from Taser in my instruction."

Spindor said his officers don't get training in first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

call me a stalker. i reply to your inane, misleading, and exceptionally predictable insulting posts.

that's what a 'discussion' is. i imagine that's why topix has a 'reply' button.

you're stalking me, too, if you had thought your insult through.

the taxes paid by LEO individuals are not sufficient to cover the salary they make. not by a looooooongshot. how could a $35k per year cop possibly pay $35k/yr in taxes?

guess who really pays 'em .... everyone. and we demand better treatment from our public servants.

*sigh* That wasnt what I meant and you know it. What I meant by that is that they contribute to their own salary by paying taxes. Since your salary is paid by taxes, perhaps you could share with us what your job is? I dont want specifics, just the field.

i claim to be nothing but ordinary. unexceptional. average enough to blend easily into the background. statistically, my profile is without deviation. my job skills require creative, analytical, and deductive reasoning.

how is it that a man who displays Bible verses on his profile can feel good about himself, making his living by selling weapons? these things have killed, like it or not. when i asked you who would Jesus taze? a few weeks back, I was honestly hoping for an answer. Prince of Peace. ever hear of him?

MARATHON TWP -- A distraught man attempted suicide by cop early Monday, but was instead saved by the very deputies by whom he wanted to be shot.

Sgt. Don Brady, Deputy Jeremy Howe and Deputy Theron Homer of the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to a Klam Road address just before 1 a.m. after the suicidal 25-year-old man's parents called 911. Their intoxicated son had been beating himself in the head with a flashlight, and when the deputies arrived, they weren't sure where he was.

The deputies checked the home but did not find the man until Howe noticed an open window that led to the roof. Brady and Howe crawled out onto the roof and eventually located the man crouched under some low-hanging branches.

The man told Brady he didn't want to talk to the deputies, and then Howe noticed the man had a gun, which he pointed at the deputies. The deputies then left the roof.

The man began yelling at the deputies, telling them to shoot him and refusing to drop the gun because he wanted them to shoot him. He kept pointing his gun at the deputies, who had taken cover behind some trees, taunting them to shoot him.

The man's father made his way onto the roof and spoke to his son for several minutes, finally convincing him to give up the gun. The father threw the gun to Brady, who checked it and found it unloaded.

The suicidal man went to the peak of the roof and sat down, hanging over the edge. He said he did not want to live, and was going to jump if the deputies would not shoot him. Brady began talking to the man, who requested a cigarette. Brady got the man a cigarette, took it to him on the roof, and began to talk to him. The man said he didn't like life, didn't like himself and wanted it all to be over. He became agitated again, saying he was going to jump off the roof. When he saw his mother below, he told her to go in the house because she didn't want to see what was going to happen.

After speaking to Brady for a while longer, the man went back up to the roof peak and hung over the edge. He asked Brady if he thought he could do a handstand up there, and Brady told him he didn't want to do that. The man came back to talk to Brady for a while longer.

In the end, there was a brief struggle on the roof between the deputies and the suicidal man. He was subdued with a Tazer, handcuffed and escorted off the roof.

The man was taken to Lapeer Regional Medical Center for evaluation, and the report will be forwarded to the Lapeer County Prosecutor's Office for review.

Lt. Gary Parks is proud of the way the deputies handled the extremely tense situation.

"Here's a case where our guys went out there... They could see that this guy wanted the police to shoot him, and our guys are trained in that scenario," he said. "It's just a good example of some really good police work our guys are doing out there on a day-to-day basis."

Parks said the deputies "showed good restraint and control."

"They saved this guy's life," he said.
