I expect to take heat for what I am about to say.

What if she really wanted to jump? What if the guy with the loaded gun just really wanted to end his own life. Pills, hanging, jumping, shooting, suffocating, what if those that chose to end their own lives without harming others were allowed that right? I still to this day don't understand why our government and those busy body social minded individuals insist on preventing someone from making the ultimate personal decision.

Where in the Constitution does it say the government has to prevent a person from commiting suicide?

I am not advocating suicide, nor would I stand by without at least offering assistance to someone in need. If a person is resolved and wont hurt others by taking their own life, then I just don't see where it is our right to stop them.

That having been said. Jumping off a bridge over 26 is sloppy and would have hindered others lives. I'm not sure, but that sounds more like an attention plea than an actual attempt.

I'm not going to give you heat and I'm glad you would try to help someone.

Suicide in more cases than not, does harm others. If not physically,(which jumping off a bridge in traffic certainly has the potential to do), emotionally it usually causes tremendous harm to those left behind. Especially when no note is written.

I can't claim to know the answers though. Usually those set on doing it are not going to put themselves in a position where anyone can stop them. Then again, cries for attention or help should be considered serious enough for intervention.

The end of life issue for someone terminally ill though is a whole different issue for me. I don't care for the term "assisted suicide." It shouldn't even contain the word suicide. At some point we have to allow the suffering to stop. I want my children and grandchildren to have whatever it is I have left at that point. Not the doctors!

I'm not a liberal by any stretch of the imagination but don't understand your statement.

Very well stated!! We can choose to end our pets' misery - with no repurcussions. Humans should have the same choice.

If it was Lokel's child, it would make absolute sense why they would WANT to jump!!!

Just for some perspective I went and saw a friend of mine that is a local Phychiatrist. I told him my opinion and he laughingly said he could have me commited. Here is how he put it.

Suppose you wanted to kill yourself and thought it wouldn't hurt anyone else. Maybe that it would make others lives better.

Now imagine coming home to find your child has commited suicide. Is your life unchanged? Are you any better for their having commited suicide?

He said, now lets pretend you are planning to commit suicide. He said lets call your child and just let them know you are not coming home because you are going to commit suicide. He asked me if I would like him to make that call. I said heck no!

His point was made. It's nice to have friends that know more than you do. I appreciate that he took time out of his busy day to chat with an old college buddy and explain the real cost of suicide.

Thats about right. Or they would have sued the bridge builder for making it to high.

There is no need for you to have to chat with yourself. Plenty of us on here are willing to laugh at what you write and to chat with you. Goodness!!:P

my son did commit suicide on christmas eve of 07 leaving a 3 year old child behind with her mom out of her life. Not only did it rip my heart out its left me with the task of raising my granddaughter, whom i love dearly and blaming myself for thinking that I had not pushed enough for the help he needed maybe if had I reconized what was happening I could have saved him. maybe people who commit suicide dont always want to die. they want the pain to go away. Pain thats seems small to us is huge to them. Maybe I would have more of a reason to keep living. If you have children then you know that you would die to save them.

You have a real good reason to keep living. You have a 3 year old granddaughter that needs you. What better reason could there be now?
