Its said what has happened to Manistee. I grow up there and don't get back much.(3 years or so) It is obvious that the indians have no respect for the surrounding. All the Little River indians care about is themselfs! They dont care about the sports fish and the dont care are the fellow manistee people! Boycott the casino and run them out of town and meansd nessary.

Maybe you should come back more often, Big D, and hang with someone other than your friends in town. We newcomers are shaking up Manistee County and are planning on dragging it kicking & screaming into the 21st Century. I'm not "Indian" but I sure do agree with the fact that if it weren't for the Tribe this County would have gone into bankruptcy several years ago.

You're right, 1pomofo, in 1836 all "they" (the whites) thought about was clear cutting all the timber and getting rich.

As for the netfishing issue. You might try reading the facts instead of listening to people with an agenda of there own.

Have a great weekend, y'all.

I watched the indians pull nets last week leaving a bunch of dead lake trout floating on the surface. Lake trout cannot survive getting pulled to the surface that fast. So they may just take whitefish but the lake trout are dying and beeing pitched back overboard. It is ridiculous what they get away with, and I am out there watching it almost everyday with nothing I can do about it. Sickening!!!!

And who is that smart to say Manistee would have went bankrupt without the casino. Maybe you should live here before you spout off about a town you know nothing about!

The 1836 Treaty is between the United States and the Indian Nations. The Tribes were indigenous peoples with their own self-governing culture. That is why they are treated as soverign nations within a nation.

For the tribes to decimate their fishery serves no purpose for them or anyone else. Do the violate their own laws occasionally? Undoubtedly. But who are we to condem when our own people violate our game and fish laws? Seems a bit hypocritical. All the complaints from commercial fishers has a ring of greed. And why is it more unfair for the Tribes to fish for stocked species than those of us who bought licenses but have no access to the big lake unless we own a big boat or hire a charter?

What's going to happen when the "Inland" hunting and fishing issue is resolved and it favors the Tribes? Will we go to war?

I am not an Indian, but I am very proud of the Lakota who by treaty own all of the Black Hills, which is roughly the western half of South Dakota. They have repeatedly turned down any monetary settlement for their Sacred Lands.

Manistee was better off without the casino. The progress that has come about in Manistee is good. I think growth would have happened in time by itself. I hate to see the town turn into a casino/company town. I haven't looked forward to a trip up there in a long time.

I see allot of blatant racism here. People hating Indians for what little they have left. It's as if we could not have ever made a good enough deal with the dominant culture. The Fishing and hunting entitlements where brought and paid for through the 1836 treaty. They are not special rights. Example your average fisherman, purchasing a fishing license is entitled to fish practically anywhere in Michigan, however Indian's can only fish and hunt in a much lesser designated area. So whats so special about that? Seems like every decade or so we have to re educate people about what the facts are.

The sportfishing community and other concerned citizens that come to Manistee to fish and enjoy boating on Lake Michigan need to come together and boycott the casino and the Manistee House of Flavors or feathers as it has become known. Do we have the right to assemble, say in front of said business with picket type signs?
NO NETS !!!!!

I agree, the City of Milwaukee should be boycotted it's an eye sore just like the tugs docked next to it.
I find it hard to believe that anyone would want to buy a new condo on Manistee lake with all this garbage in the area.

I have video indian net boats throwing pink skins over the rails on the way to the dock, last time I checked whitefish arent pink, second if nets are for whitefish and chubs why are there nets at the mouth of the manistee? I have fished around the nets, irregularly marked and a danger to those who are unfamiliar. I believe the indian should have no right to net salmon that our sportsmen dollars pay for. They dont pay a penny and sell our fish for their profit! Get the nets out of our great lakes, We are all natives we were all born here we should all take care of our resources, not dredging our lakes with nets, and to be honest we dont owe the tribe anything go get a canoe and a hand net

So when are the natives americans going to take their first elk from Michigan Herd? What if they decide to start cutting older growth trees from the national and state forests we have all over the state. They now fish with lights at night for walleye in the spring. They spear in closed streams. Where do you draw the line on what can and cant be done. They feel that they can hunt on any property, reguardless of ownership. Now, they may tell you different but I know for fact it does and has happened. How is this issue solved? Who knows, but I do know that if we all stopped going to the casino it would bring them to the negotiation table. Is that the correct thing? No, the casino's employe lots of people in the state. My idea for the fishing issue is, with all the money that the casino's generate they can run their own fish hatchries or help fund the states we know they need money. If they plant fish they should also be able to harvest. If they have a vested interest then all can be held accountable. just ideas.

You were either drunk on one of the charter boats or you are totally blind,i wonder if you really know what a salmon looks like let alone seeing their tails, what an idiot

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Aquarius

Avoid making promises today, or even believing in other people's promises. Today is not a good day to make commitments, as they are not likely to materialise. Taking risks is a no-no. Try to relax until the numbers are in your favour. Those pursuing their career will benefit.
