First off, changing your name doesn't hide your stupidity, sir. Secondlym you'd be pissed if your own child was in band? Shows how supportive you are of your son's interest. And believe it or not, people stay in the stands and cheer for the band. For help later on in life, before you insult something, make sure the assumptions you make about it are true.

Yea, you're totally right... most of them are paying money to:
a) sneak and make out behind the stands
b) smoke pot behind the stands
c) walk around and socialize (at best)
d) get into and/or watch fights behind the stands

or, for the older crowd:
e) drink enough to act like an idiot and embarrass their kids... from the stands.

Oh, and a few are just nice parents or bored citizens that actually want to support their community's youth... including the band, which is indeed very highly regarded.

Sorry dude, but I think the band geek owned you.

This might sound way too logical to you, but you can HEAR a band playing while you're getting concessions, whereas to follow a football game, it's really best to be sitting and watching. Even more logical, is that some people go to the games to see the game, while others go to see the band... and some *gasp* go to see both. I know... crazy idea huh?
And as a not-particularly-gung-ho-about -the-band individual, I can still attest they're freaking awesome. Not sure what the scholarship outlook for band kids is, but if it came down to talent within sport/activity, the band kids would OWN most if not all the other "talents/athletes" at NCHS. It's pointless and delusional to deny that. It doesn't mean our other athletes are bad... it just reaffirms that our band program is unusually good.

I'm reserving hope for the new school, but my disappointment began with the name. Thomas Nelson? Seriously? Of all the important historical figures of our county, we really need to name the new high school after the same guy as the old one? Worse, Thomas Nelson really wasn't all that important to Nelson County history... most of his contributions, while commendable, were in Virginia (where there's another Nelson County named after him...). What about John Rowan, Isaac Cox, James Rogers, or any of our other contributing founders (obviously leaving out the Bards, as that name is covered by the city high school). Cox is probably the most deserving of recognition, though Rowan is possibly the best known.

The next disappointment was the colors. Drab and boring. Forgettable. Unimpressive in the most literal sense.

Maybe worse of all... the kids are already referring to their mascot, the "Generals" as the "Genitals." Wonderful. Glad to see so much forethought and planning went into these things.

Also, while I'm on the soap box, it's really sad that the Juniors were reassured they wouldn't have to move, only to let their guards down and be told they would have to. Lame. If enough WANT to go, they should be able to, but they should be able to choose.

The community was asked for suggestions for the name of the school and the mascot, then the best suggestions was voted into effect! So the community wanted the names that are in place! "Disappointed" is a disappointment, he did some research on the county but failed to do any on how the new school was named!

I didnt change my name for one, but what if the team didnt play on Friday nights, would all those people show up just to watch the band? The answer Is "hell no"! And my statements are facts not assumptions, the only people who care about the band are the band parents, get over it! And for the record, NC band sucks, I went to all the football games, and they need more practice than the football team does!!

First of all, your flouting of basic English grammer rules is either apaulling or hilarious. And believe it or not, people actually have come up to me and said that they wished that the football team was as good as the marching band. Shocking, ain't it? Also, I know the story about the football games are false because if you don't know a damn thing about band, how exactly could you judge it. You may just let your ignorance tune out the music, because lost of people, including the judges that sent us to state semifinals 2 years in a row, seem to disagree.

This is just the beginning of rediculous and good old boy hires. With an idiot like Junior Dugan making decisions, this is the crap you are going to hear about. It's a joke starting with the principal on down. Let me rephrase that, from the Superintendant on down. They are all idiots in that school system.

A couple things... One, "if enough people want to go, they should be able to choose." WTF....Really? What planet are YOU living on?? Suppose they ALL want to go? Would you just let everyone leave the old school because they 'wanted to?' Also, while you obviously are a decent writer with a good vocabulary, your factual reasoning is missing an important quality. It is misinformed, if not outright incorrect. You dismiss General Nelson's heroic Revolutionary War service as irrelevant to his Kentucky namesake because his contributions were "in Virginia." Well I've got news for you friend, Kentucky ,as was West Virginia, were both part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. So from the perspective of those living at the time, General Nelson's actions took place in their own state, which would later be called Kentucky.
Glad I could educate you on this very important matter. Now you owe me five minutes I'll never get back.
Well thank you for the writing compliments, and for replying. By letting those who want to go choose, I was specifically referring to the Juniors who will fall in the TNHS district. If all eligible Juniors wanted to go under that scenario, then, well, we'd have what is actually set to occur next year. If all of them wished to stay at NCHS, then we would have what was originally promised. If some wanted to stay and some wanted to go, we'd have a very commendable compromise.

I'm glad you're up on your history, as many people are very apathetic towards such things these days. However, I'm very aware that Kentucky was originally part of Virginia... but then Nelson County was originally part of Jefferson County, too, so why not name the high school Thomas Jefferson High School? Jefferson had nothing to do with our geographical area, either, but he was also from Virginia, and even more noteworthy than Gen. Nelson (<--I don't mean that suggestion to be literal, of course, but exemplary). I admire the contributions General Nelson made to our COUNTRY, and don't dispute that he deserved the honor of having a Virginia county named for him, but as there is already a high school carrying his name, it would have been nice to see some recognition for one of the actual pioneers who founded the stations/settlements/towns of Nelson County, literally with sweat and blood.

We should be careful with further comments. Though we might disagree, our discussion, and maybe this entire thread, is almost frighteningly beyond the normal Topix conversation quality level.

Actually, I did research it, as I have a sibling attending the new school. The call for suggestions and community input was under-advertised. The kids got to do some voting, but there was a common theme of "none of our choices are that great." Unfortunately, by the time they realized their choices were rather lame, the votes had been cast.

In the community, there already seems to be a growing sense of apathy (at best) among the students towards the names/mascot, and a distinct sense of "who came up with these names/colors/etc." from the parents/adults. I commend them for involving the public and students in the decision-making process at all, but as usual the board seemed to push community involvement only as far as they absolutely had to in order to appear "open to suggestions" and "interested in the majority opinion."

Very well said "Disappointed". I think Wes Bradley is very arrogant and full Of himself with this new school. If you have seen any of the news stories about the school you can clearly see how he uses the "I" and "me" in his answers. I heard from several students that have toured the new school and said how he used the words "my school" and "my vision" etc....I know several Teachers that were very disappointed they have to work at the new school with him. I think this new school is going to be a disaster because of lack of leadership. We will see though. Will be interesting for sure.
