My family has been getting petitfours at Hiss Bakery since my christening (34 years ago) and we get them for every holiday. We have tried other bakeries for these, just in case we ever have to get them someplace else, and in 34 years we have never found another bakery that even comes close. Here is to another 50 years of Hiss Bakery!

Yes, Akron's not as alive with family/corner bakeries as it once was. It was fun for us kids to visit them early in the day to check their wares (and our pocket change to buy them).
I remember Fred's in Firestione Park, Hirschfeldt's on Grant Street near the Park, Bon-Ton on Canton Road in Ellet, and the bakery (City?) on the corner of Cross and Grant on the way downtown... among others that I frequented over more than five decades but can't recall by name. |

Try Ann's in Wadsworth. Been there for years, it's the best in Medina county for sure.

Vincent's has the best cannoli (sp?) in the area and if you're hungry for the best all around Monkey Bread, go to Great Lakes Baking on Main St in Hudson.

Completely forgot about Crest. Good catch and they've been around for years. You're right, everything is very good and always fresh |

1 You've made all of us Italians proud by properly spelling "cannoli". Ninni's on Tallmadge Avenue and Crest on Main Street have been favorites of many from North Hill, after shopping at DeViti's. It would be sad to visit the Akron area and not be able to enjoy these wonderful bakeries. |

Is Todaro's still around? We old Kenmorites had to make do with the Whitehouse bakery on the boulevard. In high school we would go for the "day old" rack, half-price stuff. Donuts, cream puffs, etc. Mr. Tedrow in health class would warn us about all of those "empty calories" |

Does Cheda's still bake that great bread?

Did you go to Kenmore in the 60's. I remember going to the boulevar, getting a donut and thinking I had a great lunch. Still think it was better than the cafeteria. LOL |

aww, so heartwarming. There's a lot about the area I miss, but so many new opportunities with the move. I can't handle the winters anymore, so we don't know if we will come back when this "gig" is over. Just remember I left a good job (and dog park and house) in the city...... I guess I'll have to be a voice from afar, at least for now. |

We used to go to Crest at least once a week, and they always gave kids a free cookie. Just like Temo's candy used to give free candy samples. |

1 From Cuy. Falls - spent many Saturday mornings going to DeVitis, then down the street to Crest, then across the "High Level Bridge" to CFO. Miss it! I think I could hang out with "San Jose Transplant" and "Berg". Anyone with Pink Floyd as their picture is alright with me. |

I'm not allowed in the Bay area. I got busted for illegally selling artichokes in Milpitas. |

Late 50s, early 60s. When I had the money I did eat in the cafeteria. Meatloaf w/gravy 15 cents, mashed potatoes 10 cents, veggie of the day 10 cents, 2 cartons milk 8 cents. 2 day-old pastries and a pepsi was only 20 cents down on the boulevard. That left money for a couple of games on the pinball machine at some little greasy spoon whose name slips my mind. |
