I hear the parents and others are complaining about this shooting.

If the 19 year old kid had complied with officers' instructions instead of pulling a gun, he would be alive today.

The 19 year old brought this on himself. Just plain (dead) stupid.

The dog's handler returned fire, hitting the man in the head and killing him.

Sorry but this is just another example of overzealous policing in Allegheny County. While I do realize that officers have extremely difficult positions in that they have to use "snap judgements" in situations like this, this is over the top. Imagine if you saw this big german shepherd running at you, of course you would do something if you had the means.
During my time in Pittsburgh, I also saw the police use these dogs to clear the nightclub crowd off the street on the weekends- something I have never seen in any other city. I never saw so many marine type guys with shaved heads in my life. Once I left Pittsburgh, I realized just how socially conservative the city is. If the police tried to pull these tactics in any other city, there would be serious repurcussions and even riots- can you imagine a police officer shooting a kid over a dog, or the consistent use of dogs to move people off the street (which is a violation of one's civil liberties?). Truly an ass backwards city.

jacksplat ,Let me get this right:
"Imagine if you saw this big german shepherd running at you, of course you would do something if you had the means."

Remove tin foil hat-time:especially if the german shephard was released by a cop, there peanut head einstein?
The cop is there to confront you,you dont comply, dog gets released to FORCE you to comply, you pull out a concealed gun and kill police dog!!!!
Wow,what a naturally logical way to think, copernicus!
I digress, because we now have to consider the "victims"civil rights.this absolutely HAS to come up eventually.
Why was pig cops messing with little junior for no reason?
Oh I can hear it now.
I Got it: bad cop was feeling like killing blacks today, but needed a reason,he started to get depressed, and remembered he'd bought a pair of X_RAY specs out of "Future Racist Cop" magazine when he was just a 9 year old fledgeling bigot.
Knowing that all he had to do was spell his name right on the racist cop application,he knew his innocent- black-citizen-x-ray specs would come in handy some day .
All bad cop guy had to do now was convince police dog (who also admitted to being raised by whites, and therefore must also be a bigot, and being of german/aryan heritage,he must be racist)to wrongly accuse mr. innocent something, anything.
Its all becomeing very clear to me now.
Time to reload the bong and turn on Chris Moore so I can get to the truth ,.The madness must stop!!!!!!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhh. Now thats a logical thought process, capeche'?

Wow, your level of intelligence is astounding! To think that the cops might have to use some amount of force to clear out large amounts of people who have been drinking alcohol all night. I mean alcohol has no effect on peoples judgment, and there is no reason that one cop shouldn't go in with a bouquet of flowers to clear out club goers. And marine type guys with shaved heads? These guys have to put up with the worst scum of the city, they are not there to be nice or to be your friend. Next time you need a police officer for something serious, hopefully the fattest, oldest most incompetent cop in Pittsburgh shows up instead of one of those terrible marine looking guys with the shaved heads...

I read your comments and understand your point of view. If I put myself in the officers shoes and saw someone shoot my police dog, there exists a good probability that the gun could be turned on me. So there was a good probability the officer shot in self defense. The UPMC tapes will reveal that. So I was wrong in my comments above.

HOWEVER, what really bugs me is the use of canines for crowd control. I lived in many major cities- police officers generally stand around until the crowds eventually dwindle- occasionally there are a few fights but those get dealt with accordingly. But to use dogs to chase people away, as a scare tactic? Most people, even though they might be drunk, are not fighting, so you can't clear people with dogs on the pretense that something "might" happen.

Let me repeat, that would never fly in any other city. The only reason why it happens in Pittsburgh is because the socially conservative population permits it and those that could speak out against it generally don't have the means, economically or socially, to do so.

First off this wasn't the Mt Oliver Police it was the Pittsburgh Police that were involved with this insident. The Mt. Oliver cops are worthless in handling crime. I have lived here and know first hand the are scred to approach these kids and do anyhting at all!! I have called them several times about incidents and they never even show up and if they do the suspects treat them with total disrespect and they take it!! I wish the Pittsburgh Police would come through more often and shake down these kids!! maybe they wouldn't run rampent around here and carry there guns so blatently arounfd all the time intimidating residents!! Let me repeat, " I live hear in Mt. Oliver and know first han how things are".

A police dog is treated the same as a fellow officer of the law. you shoot the dog and live your going to jail for killing a police officer, you shoot the dog and the police have every damn right to shoot your little punk ass down

MOP's are always last on the scene whenever there are serios problems. I guess they feel why risk injury with what they are earning. Most are biding time until they can swing a job on the city of Pittsburgh payroll when they get hired. The Mt. Oliver Police consider themselves gaining experience for the city jobs so why risk injury.

This 19 year old was not carrying a .357 magnum to make a fashion statement. Seems to me, he was looking for trouble. The police may have kept him from killing another person. All he had to do was comply with the police, but he didn't. It's really lame to try to justify shooting a police dog. If he would have dropped his weapon, that dog would not have harmed him, and neither would the police.
It is not sick to think of this police dog as more important than some low life disobeying the law repeatedly and having no regard for innocent life. I'm so sick and tired of police officers getting the blame for everything, and the parents are condoning and excusing their kids actions. He had previous offenses, yet his parents think he can do no wrong.
I say let the police officers do their job. They have a responsibility to uphold the law and a right to defend themselves. I'll tell you what's ***backwards, people condoning and excusing what this 19 year old did (also had a prior record), and criticizing the police for doing their job.
My condolences to the officers for the loss of Aulf. A faithful and loyal officer to the end. God keep you in His care.

I want to say I am from the country I was forced to live here due to a divorce I have been here 2 years now and seen more violence and guns and drugs then I have my entire life Now to the point of this shooting
1. No comply with Police officers
2. Answer (release dog) that is why it is there, I have met this dog, as long as you are doing what you are sopposed to be doing as an upstanding citizen of a community Dog is fine!
3. Dude shot dog!!!
4 So dude gets shot!!
Simple as 123 if I shot at a police dog which by laws is the same as shooting a police officer I myself would expect to be shot also what is so hard to understand!!!! This community would be a much nicer place if the trash was taken off the streets. But until then this place sucks, I hear from the old timers how this used to be the place to live back in the days. Now who would want to live here I myself have an attack dog just to protect my home while im at work and if your not trying to break into my house she will be your best friend and if you are breakinging into my house and shoot her you can expect to be scattered in my front yard and used as mulch by my trustee 12 guage OHHHHHHHHHHH and 1 other thing when Michael Vic was doing his thing with the dogs these same people are the same ones that said dogs are like people too and it was wrong so whats the difference now except there is 1 less gun and or child with exceptional problems with the law on the streets for me to worry about These types of things dont piss me off as bad as the 12 year old boy that got shot in front of the clothing store that did more good for his family then the two that shot him has ever done in their lives but thats a different subject!!!
