To The Town of Oak Island :
My husband and I would like to express our appreciation to you and your people that worked on the sewer waste management system. You recognized that our home on your Island was built with great pride and determination to provide a positive for the Island. Thousands of dollars were spent on landscaping, irrigation system, and sodding. You have donated our home a 7 X7 slab of concrete in our front yard and we only have to pay you $4,000 for this donation. We really did not want it, but no one notified us, the homeowner with such a large investment in this property, that this was planned. You had meetings on the system but being 600 miles away we could not come to the meetings. Not only the miles but we do have jobs. If we had been in meetings I don't think it would have come up about the areas that were determined to have whatever you call the concrete slab. Those who were in attendance did not realize this would be happening. Being told our property was just perfect considering slop, and whatever else the artitecture had to consider I do not believe. Directly across the street is a lot identical to ours that has not been built on and is currently for sale would also have been perfect. Perhaps a local person owns this lot and knows someone in your political arena. I know how those things work in small towns. We are sure you are so late on this project because you took so much time to consider so many things it was difficult to make the best decisions. Well, I hope you are happy. You have made one family that had a dream and that dream you made come true with a beautiful beach, a small town and friendly people. We made our retirement home there with all those delightful things and a nice small yard for our grandchildren to play in, and now you have provided us with a slab of concrete that totally ruins the whole green environment. Perhaps an environmentalist should have been consulted. And only for the price of $4,000, plus connecting fees, what a deal.

I hope we will be able to pay you back. I hope every inch of property you are legally allowed to cross on our property was used, but not one inch more. We will see you soon.

You are not alone, I wonder if they figured in repaving all the streets only to cut them again when a home is built?

they didn't skip over the vacant lots, so they will not need to cut the streets again when a new home is built. the sewer connection will already be there. And personally, I prefer the sewers to the septic tank, now we can add another bathroom and no longer have to have our septic tank cleaned out. We are also going to dig up our septic tank to put a pool in. $4200 isn't a bad price to pay for the sewer. We have built two homes in virginia and both were thousands more( not including hook up) Oak island is also willing to add a payment to your water bill to spread out the 4200 payment.

LTV, you are correct that every "Tax Parcel" got a tap, however some parcels consist of more than one lot. I have two parcels consisting of 8 lots, but have 2 taps, therefore 6 taps will be needed for homes in the future! I am pro sewer, it will save a lot of trees and allow for better land use. There IS NOT a tap for every lot! FYI

I can't reply with 100% assurance, but I am thinking closer to $100 is ballpark #.(of course it will be based on useage)

Yeah, but you pay for 4000 gallons used or not! But first, a $4,200 tap fee and a $1,200-$1,500 cost for a plumber!(if they can get the damn system approved & working) The town is buying a Pig in the Poke!

I am actually pro-sewer but will the sewer cause more of the vacant lots to be built on, as perk tests will not be necessary. I like the empty lots around my property

$4,200 for assesment plus another $1,500 to $2,500 to run the line under the road and another patch to bump over, why didn't the town put in a tap for each lot in advance? Now we will be driveing on bumpy roads for years to come!

If you don't have a tap now, it's gonna cost $10,000 plus for W&S. I'm selling out as soon as I can!

You obviously have more money than you know what to do with. To most of us $4200 is a lot of money.

It's especially a lot if you already had a good septic. This was not as big a hit when property was appreciating . This is a much larger percentage now.

And new taps are costing upwards of $9,000. And with lots selling for $36,000 it's an additional 25%!!!

My mobile home off Long Beach Road has been on the market for a little over 18 months. Prices have dropped so drastically over the past few years that I'm practically giving it away.

Hello Everyone. I and my Family have rented the same house for 10 years here on Oak Island.

The owner of the rental house where we live was going through a divorce and ignored his notice from Oak Island Water and Sewer, to prepay for his connection to the new sewer system.

With no notice, Oak Island Water and Sewer added the cost of installing the sewer pump station to our water bill. Our bill has averaged around $38 dollars per month for 10 years. Our monthly bill has gone up to $164.00 per month. When we questioned this, we were told ,"take it up with your landlord, he hasn't paid the bill we sent him."

We asked about the amount being charged and how long it would take to pay off the Landlords bill and we were told that our bill would remain that way from now on... Asking further questions we were referred to the City Council Meetings to get any more answers.

The divorce proceeded, the ex-wife now owns the property. A local Realtor is now charged with collecting our rent and conveying our concerns.

How can a renter be required to pay for improvements to private property by a water utility?

Since when can a renter, or anyone be forced to pay charges for water and sewer service when the connection has not even been made and there is no sewer service being provided.

The realtor has said the owner will eventually refund our household for the added costs for the period it takes to pay for the sewer charges from the utility.

So, what happens next?

YOU ARE WRONG!

Every tax parcel got a tap, not every lot. I had 4 adjacent lots (1 Tax Parcel) and got one tap, when I sold 2 of the lots for new homes, they cut the street for the 2 new taps! And guess what? the taps cost over $8,000 each!

So untill every lot is developed the streets will be cut again and again and again! So Oak Islanders had better get used to bumpy roads ahead!
