I am very glad to hear that he will be punished!

Last summer my husband and I were attacked while backpacking in Washington. 4-6 drunk townies hiked into the woods to get drunk and harrass "cityfolk" as they called us.They threatened to hit, shoot, kill and eat us, broke our tent, hit my husband and chased us 4 1/2 miles out of the forest at 8/9 pm in the dark. I had never been so scared.
As far as we know, nothing has been done to them. We filed a report but when we talked to the sherrif he said "thats what townies do in the summer". We said no, and we brought up the BW example and said this was not okay.
I emailed the governer and told her what happened, her staff wrote back and pretty much said there was nothing they could do.

So please, do not ever go to Packwood Washington to backpack (near Mt St Helens and Rainer). If Washington isn't going to protect its visitors- don't go!

ps Ms Sub. That is why it is legal to carry a gun in the national forests. You always have people or animals or people that are like animals. You need to be prepared. that could of been alot more dangerous of a situation. Never go into the woods with out a pistol and a rifle.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure with the Sheriff's enabling attitude about what the "townies do", nothing will ever change there. What a shame. What an absolute horrible experience to go through.
Makes one wonder if any women campers have been attacked and nothing was done, because thats what the townies do.

When I helped build the new highway out of the Mt. St. Helens area, my girlfriend came down to see me with her two young daughters on the 4th of July weekend. The .357 Reuger a co-worker loaned me that was sited just a scoshe low and right was sufficient to make certain the locals were not coming over for anything but a quick hello. A number of women in Washington carry an over/under .357 Deringer. If you are in trouble and you are waiting for a police officer to save you, bend over and kiss your ass good-bye. Or, you might want to exibit a backbone and shut the young roudys down at the start.

But we would be lead to believe that these upstanding individuals would not have done any of this had the gun controll laws been more restrictive. Weather or not you want to carry, get a C&C let the other person wonder if you really are.

I don't think a gun wouldh have helped since we did not know how many of them there were, and where they all were, or what weapons they had. They were also drunk and unpredictable, there was no way the two of us stood a chance in a fight, being 4 and a 1/2 miles away from a main road also did not help. When you carry a weapon you also have to be prepared that it can be used against you.
