We are descendents of Ulam/Townsend family, with graves on private farmland in town of Avonmore. We'd like to visit in early October. How do we get permission to enter property? Does Avonmore still have a historical society?
Thanks..Oakland, CA

I think there is an Avonmore Community Association web site, there may be some contact info there. There used to be an historical society. If I remember correctly the cemetary shows up on a USGS quad map.

Went up there as a kid, I really doubt the property owner(s) would mind someone visiting.

If you have problems figuring things out repost and I wil try to help you.

Thank you for offering to help!
My father is 87 and lives in Southern California.
He is Frederick Ulam, raised in Pittsburgh. We are coming to Pittsburgh early October and I would like to take him to the old family cemetary. At one time it was on property owned by the Clines. We visited in 1996 and had to walk in. My dad is an amputee, and I would like to be able to drive in. I think there are metal posts blocking the place. I think the entry is a 5th street.

We think the property you refer to is now owned by the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County. You may want to contact them.

Actually, we made it. Contacted the owners,
who kindly mowed the path up the hill.
Thank you for all your suggestions..

Congratulations Martha. I used to run from my house by the pump station and through the old graveyard. As I remember it without the help of the owners you would have had a big challenge in getting your father to the site. Anybody remember hearing about Chop Chop Charlie?

Who was "Chop Chop Charlie?" Also, is there another way into the cemetary from 5th street?

Yes, you can read the stones. I hope this 200 year old cemetary, with my ancestors, doesn't just disintegrate...

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Gemini

You'll need every ounce of patience today because even the best-laid plans could go up in smoke under the Full Moon lunar eclipse. It seems that certain people are doing their best to throw spanners in the works, and the more annoyed you become the more they'll goad you still further. If there's dissent in the ranks about how to spend New Year's Eve, you may decide to go your own sweet way and prove that you're an individual in your own right. But try not to let any bad feelings mar the celebrations. Have a fantastic night!
