Measure GG not the answer

Full story: San Gabriel Valley Tribune

IT has always been in the government playbook to print money - or, with local governments, to raise taxes - whenever expenditures surge above revenues.

How does increasing taxes provide for accountablity? It only gives more money to a city government that does not know how to BUDGET! You may not have to pay sales tax on groceries or *prescription* medications, but for the people who can't escape the creepy El Monte stores, they will have to pay the tax on toothpaste, shampoo, cleaning supplies and NON PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE. That adds up, and can truly matter to someone not collecting a large salary or retirement benefits from the city of El Monte. Only 50 cents may not matter to the people backing all these new taxes, but to some of our residents, it is important.

this is why we don't support it. if you look at the fact, 50 cent might not seem much but in the long run, el monte resident will suffer with more tax.

Enough is enough. The city of El Monte and the school districts in El Monte are taxing us all out of our homes.

Prices go up, and I have to cut spending. Social security hasn't increased my checks because the gas prices are higher, I have to pay a new sewer tax, and grocery prices have gone up. Now the city wants more for sales tax, and schools want more for property taxes. I DON'T HAVE MORE! Maybe you want my house too?

WE CAN ALL DISAGREE BUT HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU CAST YOUR VOTE FOR MEASURE GG:

1. DOES NOT go on your GROCERY OR PRESCRIPTION MEDS. BILL.

((((Sales taxes NEVER apply to common grocery items or prescription medications))))

2. It's TEMPORARY - EXPIRES in 5 YEARS....automatically.

(((Enough time to build reserves depleted by State take-aways and materials rising costs))))

2. MANDATES a resident/business owner OVERSIGHT COMMITTEEE to review the use of revenues.

((((The Committee MUST be formed because the requirement is built into the measure...there is no way around this)))))

3. Keeps sales tax revenues in El Monte - Not Sacramento.

(((Unlike the existing sales tax...the City keeps these revenues...no sharing with Sacramento))))

4. Adds only 50 cents to a $100 purchase - Only pennies for a purchase of $10 or less.

((((This is not a "homeowers tax" as some have said...non-El Monteans pay into the pot too every time the buy in El Monte))))

5. DOES NOT....REPEAT DOES NOT....Go on your grocery bill or prescription meds bill...THOSE ITEMS ARE ALWAYS EXEMPT.

....and you're saying the city of El Monte should get the increase from us? I don't think so. Between sales tax and the increases on the property tax bill we are going broke.
