HIGHLAND --
It is a love story with a Shakespearean tragic ending with two characters who inspired ballets and fairy tales.
A lonesome swan roams a private Highland lake searching for its lost partner.

"It's sad," said Lorraine Barciszewski, who lives on Towne East Lake on the east side of Highland. "She just swam around all night crying after it happened."

The pair of mute swans who Barciszewski called "Hansel" and "Gretel" were separated after a neighbor struck one of the swans in the head with an ax.

The man told neighbors the swan came behind him as he was landscaping and bit him on the back of the leg.

For a couple of weeks, the surviving swan mourned, making crying noises, hanging around where its mate was killed.

"You can hear it around the shore at night," said Stephen Fergesen, president of the Towne East Lake Association. "It just kind of bellows."

I can't believe this.. I mean if a cat or a dog bit someone, they wouldn't just up and kill it. Swans are very protective over their territory, especially their nests that may have eggs in them. Who wouldn't be protective over their territory?(yes, I know this is an animal we are talking about, and I am comparing them to humans.. but still)

If it's an eye for an eye, the guy should get axed for killing an innocent animal. But then again, an eye for an eye makes the world blind.

A society is only as strong as they treat its weakest members — including the young, the elderly and animals.

Yep it sounds like it was defending. If it was the male all you would have to do is look at the female from a distance during mating and it would charge you.

I just don't get this town. First there's the freaking no-kill animal shelter people who would walk over a dying child to pick up a mangy dog. Then theres clowns echo-ing the swan call. hell, have you ever been bit by a swan. They can tear chunks out of you. If you think they are so peaceful, spend a little time at the Troy park lake and see how they terrorize the geese (which can also give nasty bites). Of course we can always cuss the farmer with our mouth full and prosecute local taxpaying farmers when his herbicide gets carried by the wind onto the garden club posies. Give me a break.

I live by the lake where the swan was killed. I have given my Grandkids food to feed it. It never attacked them. The guy had jeans on, come on. The Swans are said to keep geese off the lake. We still have geese. I think that it was horrible for him to kill it. They were beautyful.
Seems like some people on here don't like animals.

maybe we like the two legged animals better. my concern is whether or not anyone ate the swan. there's no point in wasting good food whether it bit him or he bit the swan. swan tastes more "sweet chicken"

How do you know what it taste like? I'm not sure I like the two legged animal, but I think he regrets that he killed it.

I know what swan tastes like because I was stationed in Europe where it is served often. I also know this due to an unfortunate event that happened when I was young and my uncle ran over his swan while on his tractor mowing near his pond. He felt badly too but then we were able to celebrate the creatures life (and the creature's death)over dinner that next sunday.
