Opponents of the same-gender marriage bill appear to have been successful in their petition campaign to place a people’s veto on the ballot in November asking voters to decide on the future status of this law; I believe whatever the outcome of this vote is that the State must now revisit the issue for further discussion with the Maine People to arbitrate a compromise bill that most Maine People will accept. Otherwise, if the State fails to do so then I worry that a Pandora’s Box could be opened that leads to a number of petitioners asking the State to legalize other forms of non-traditional marriages and a more intensified protracted war of words and dueling citizen sponsored bills between traditionalists and non-traditionalists in the state over the issue of how marriage in Maine should be define in its laws.
