I wonder if Maine would have been better off revamping its domestic partnership laws to equalize them with most of the rights Maine now grants to traditional married couples than enacting same-gender marriage rules. If my readings of Maine’s domestic partnership laws (Maine public laws/Chap. 672/H.P. 1152-L.D. 1579) and its marriage laws (MRSA Title 19-A, Sec. 650) is correct only inheritance rights is afforded to domestic partnership registrants, whereas married couples have much more rights under Maine laws. I feel the State is missing a unique opportunity with this issue to legislate a common ground approach that would provide more rights to same-gender couples while respecting the traditional definition of marriage.

Opponents of the same-gender marriage bill appear to have been successful in their petition campaign to place a people’s veto on the ballot in November asking voters to decide on the future status of this law; I believe whatever the outcome of this vote is that the State must now revisit the issue for further discussion with the Maine People to arbitrate a compromise bill that most Maine People will accept. Otherwise, if the State fails to do so then I worry that a Pandora’s Box could be opened that leads to a number of petitioners asking the State to legalize other forms of non-traditional marriages and a more intensified protracted war of words and dueling citizen sponsored bills between traditionalists and non-traditionalists in the state over the issue of how marriage in Maine should be define in its laws.

All of you anti gay marriage fanatics will be remembered in the same way we remember those who opposed equal rights for African Americans... good luck with your history, you're an embarrassment to the human race.
