What are everyones opinion, do you think Augusta could support it's own weekly newspaper? At one time there was a weekly paper, what happened to it?

The expense of operating a printing press and staffing for a real newspaper would not be feasable. Look at the Printing Co across America, most have downsized, sold or closed the doors. Internet has made it easier to recieve news and current events across the globe while Printing Co. are losing revenue and can't operate as a profitable business. Demographically Augusta does not have enough news and advertisement potential to operate independently as Augusta News, when there is already a County Paper that struggles with cost efficiency presently.

its all done on the internet now and then sent to press and has to be picked up and delivered. that is the problem! Can't even get the maysville paper delivered here half the time and AND the bracken county news? Go to K's and buy it. Yes it is nice to go out your door and pick it up and have a cup of coffee but everyone doesnt do that anymore...just a few. But go for it! Only if you are willing to tell it like it is. No favorites...has to be across the board representing everyone.

There is still old printing press out there and yes they can function a lot cheaper than you think. Augusta was named one of the top rivertowns in the nation and not a word about it in the paper. Want to read about Augusta School?? Think again, none of the employees send their children to Augusta, so why would they print anything? You pay the money to read it and all the work getting your news in the paper and when or if it printed, it is chopped up, weeks later and in the back of the paper. POOF BE GONE!

are not printed by an old printing press nowadays. They are are typed up on a computer, a Mac with a publisher's software and then sent to a newspaper printing company. I think if someone had the know how and resources there could be an online version only. Need advertisers to support it and forget a delivered one. Might make some people upset but the majority if not everyone in Augusta has the internet! I think that would be an awesome enterprise for the right person(s) to get into. I would if I had the experience, time, and money. Ask Miller and Bradfords (to name 2) how much they pay to be on the Maysville Ledger's site. Bradfords, K's, the Attorneys etc. could be good advertisers. This is kind of exciting. Maybe charge a small amount to subscribe? Lots of possiblities.

Yes. The question needs to be rephrased : Could (or Would) August support its own Community Website? I think it could. You can run a very good website with a lot less advertising than a newspaper requires. A good town website would include lots of photos, cover sports, town meetings, school board meetings, deaths, weddings, school news, various clubs, church news, farming news, and then include regional, state or national news that impacted Augusta. It would also offer a well run community message board and forum. This topix forum is really rather clumsy. Notice the posts on Birds Die in Western Kentucky, Presidential Debates, Woman's Head Stepped On, etc., which were not created by anyone in Augusta but imposed on us by Topix from national headquarters. A local website could offer a restaurant review section with menus and reviews of all the restaurants within an hour's drive of town; cultural news of plays and concerts scheduled within an hour's drive of town, and items on everything from Kings Island to the Cincinnati Reds, since people from Augusta go to those places. There would be lots of interviews and features on local people; this is an interesting place, and lots of people have stories to tell which are not being covered by the Maysville or Cincinnati papers. Such a website would be free to the people but would make money from the ads. Advertisers would pay for space because they would be directing their ads at people who lived here and would be actual customers. The ad rates would not be high, but all put together would make a nice income for the one person producing the site.

I researched the net. I don't see an Augusta online newsmagazine. What site are you referring to?

Why did you just not post the link or guide us to it? It would be like me saying, "I have this great restaurant that I want you to come to, but I am not going to tell you where it is, you have to find it."
