I think that this is a very sad situation I am not sure why the judge waited for the young man's mother to get out of jail other than to punish her further for his inability to be a parent. This young man is one of many who come from a dysfunctional family and end up in our justice system. If the judge wanted to help the family he should have ordered the mother to receive counseling and parenting classes for the next four years and mandate family visits and counseling while he is detained and that would have been a more positive outcome for all parties involved including the community. This young man will likely learn more deviant behaviors and that family will not want to take part in the process I hope that I am wrong and the mother will demand that she be a part of her sons rehabilitation and seek help for herself because if he changes and she does not then he is placed back into the same environment and set up to fail.

Maybe you could volunteer to take them both in. Better still, you could take in their whole family and model how to be generous and kind.
