Hi. I've been looking for info on Aiken, SC. Is Clearwater near there? We had the opportunity to be in SC last Sept. and loved it there. We were at Myrtle Beach and after we got home we began hearing people say that Aiken is a wonderful city. We are looking at relocating in the next couple of years and would love to hear any input about Aiken. I was wondering if the flowers bloom year round there or if the leaves have trees year round. Are there palm trees there? I will need to keep working so are there any jobs like cashier at a convenience store or motel front desk? Are their mobile home parks nice and if so, where would we find a listing of mobile homes that are for sale? Anyone know the cost of lot rent in Aiken? Any info would be so much appreciated.

I can only tell you what I know Jamie. We just bought a second place in Aiken SC as we want to live there when we retire. We go down once a month and it is a beatiful city. Very low key -no exciting night life for the younger crowd. It was a mild year this year- so even when we went down in January- by the afternoon we had shorts on. It did get cold in the morning.
Real estate is reasonable. We bought a brand new 4 bedroom townhouse in a really nice area for 130K. The outskirts of Aiken are growing so there are plenty of service jobs. The town of Aiken itself is historical and has nice boutiques , cafes, etc- but the outskirts have your typical franchise places to work. Aiken is on the tip of SC near Augusta GA. I would imigine it is about 5-6 hours to North Flordia? The people are wonderful there! and there seems to be lots of activities that go on. I wish I could live there year round right now- but I have to work awhile. |

Lets get real guys! There's a bad apple anywhere you move. it's really according to what kinda life you are looking for. IF you want quiet? New ellenton and Aiken are right for you! I have lived in New Ellenton all my life (43yrs.) and nothing hardly changes because the old timers don't like change or at least most don't. DSS, Aiken Public Safety, Aiken County and last but not least, the state of SC can be rough like most places IF your not in the click. IF you live how others want you to then your set for life but, IF you rebel agains the higher up's then you have a problem. Experence is the best teacher regardless what anyone tells you. I'd say try it and see, you may or may not move in a few months. GOOD LUCK!

I can't wait til the day I have the moving van all loaded up and my tail lights cross over the state line headed out of Aiken, SC and SC altogether!!!! This state is the armpit of the country. Aiken is probably 90% relocaters, but if you go outside of Aiken in the general area they are 25 years behind any other place in the country! Some say Mississippi is bad, get real -- this place is still living pre-Civil War -- by the way I'm caucasion. Take my advice and stay away -- far fay away! Now if you like cronism and the likes and northern influences -- they love it here -- they came in and found this sleepy little town and made it their mecca, then by all means come join in. Otherwise stay away!!!!!!!

I guess it boils down to what you want out of life. I grew up in a row house in Philly and worked in that inhospitable region for 30 years. If you lived in the peace and tranquility of Aiken all your life I don't see what you are complaining about. I would have traded with you in a heartbeat if only I had the chance. Aiken, as most smaller towns, enjoys one major attribute that big cities don't; a sense of community. When you have this, all other problems can be worked out. As a retiree who toiled in a big city all my life, I find "boring" just fine. If you want excitement, go live in NYC, Detroit, Philly, or better yet, Camden New Jersey. Getting car jacked can be real exciting,........ if you survive it! Or maybe you'll just be maimed for life.

For anyone wanting the truth, don't give the negative comments above a second thought. It is obviously ONE disgruntled person (see the pattern of this simpleton: using the apostrophy where its it isn't needed in several places).
Most people love Aiken County. Those that don't should and usually do leave; just like any where else. This one person obviously has an ax to grind; we're just glad they are someone else's problem now. We have a lot to offer no matter who you are and what you are looking for in a home. The quality of life and resourcefulness of our people are testaments to the rising property values and influx of new people. A great mix of people, ideas and opportunities. Have a great day! - A Lifelong Aiken Countian |

In response to "THE TRUTH ABOUT AIKEN" simpleton.
(see the pattern of this simpleton: using the apostrophy where its it isn't needed in several places). This speaks for itself. it's = it is it = it isn't = is not so you wrote,it is it is not that cancels itself out THIS MAKES ME VERY CONFUSED. Kinda like the hose pipe issue. Is it a hose or a pipe for it can't be both. This should keep ya busy LOL |

1 beautiful places to live. Being one, who had the fortune of touring the whole United States, I can truly say, I've seen better. Let's take the prime, there is Washington State, with it's beautiful trees high paying jobs and don't forget Mt.Rainier. Or take Florida, now that is a beautiful state. Not only do you have land but jobs and sights to see. A body could spend a whole year in Florida and not cover everything to see and do. Just think of this, there are those who spend thier whole life, stuck in a one horse town and go no where. Day in and day out,Never knowing what a beautiful douglas fir looks like, or a water fall or the changing of the leaves in North Carolina. How sad. To live so limited and so closed off from the outside world. To live and die in Aiken. |

I have lived in the Aiken area for almost 20 years. I was born in the beautiful state of Washington, but I could not live there today. The Californian influx of the 70's and 80's changed the state so much that I could not afford it today. You are entirely correct about Mount Rainier, the doug firs, and the rest of its natural splendor, but I get to see that on my annual visits to what is left of my family. I love SC for the year-round weather conducive to outdoor enjoyments, the lower cost of living, and the good people here. It can be a slower-paced lifestyle if you want that, but at least yous till have some choices here. |

I lived in that area for a while as a child and I had nightmares for years after moving away. I was so glad that we moved . Like all small towns ... well actually like most places the law enforcement is dirty . I also lived in Jackson and the law enforcement at the time was Mr Bently , lets just say that I hope he gets his heart right with God before he dies.
