State Attorney and Public Defender (Duval County FL)

When is the election? And who do you think will win for the State Attorney position and the Public Defender position?

Isn't the state attorney and the public defender actually the same person?

No, they are not one in the same. I placed my question in the Jax FL forum but in other jurisdictions, what we here call the State Attorney others call the District Attorney and in some places, the Solictor. But for argument sake, the State Attorney is the Prosecutor and the Public Defender is the one providing criminal defense to a person who has been charged with something and this charged person cannot afford an attorney, so the courts, by law, must appoint an attorney (again, here, a Public Defender) to represent the 'client'.

So, does anyone in the Jax area know who is running for both offices here?

State Attorney's office: Jay Plotkin v. Angela Corey
Jay is the old guard, has a record of establishing meaningful plans and programs to prevent crime, and Angela is a discredited ex-State Attorney who is known for overly aggressive tactics.

On the Public Defender side, it's incumbent Bill White v. Matt Shirk.
Bill has a life long history or passionately defending the indigent and Matt is a young newcomer who has never really said why he wants o become the public defender. Angela supports Matt - not a good idea to have the State and the Defense be of the same mind.
Vote for Jay and Bill if you're fair minded, and Angela and Matt if you're a mean spirited fool who thinks jail is the only answer.

First off, being known for using aggressive tactics as a Prosecutor would be a complement in most circles. But obviously you don't run in "most" circles.

Secondly, on Bill, he did try to "crunch" the budget while he was in office but on the other hand, he also has increased his own salary over 22%???????? Interesting.........Why did you make this comment about Matt Shirk never saying why he wants to become Public Defender? How do you know this? Are you a stalker? and if so, I hope Angela uses her aggressive tactics to put you away.

Seriously though, Why don't you contact Matt Shirk and find out why he is running and then tell the people what he says instead of spreading your own political agenda........Thats how men talk.

Angela and Matt because I think they are better for Jax. If I was mean spirited..I would have JSO just shoot the criminal A holes and forget the court system. Wait...that is what they are doing....GO JSO

It is interesting that the states attorney and the public defender work for the same people, that being the state.

Angela and Matt are going to win because they are good conservative republicans and they're opponents are extremely liberal and democrats. Not to mention, they are what are court system needs! we need CHANGE!!! Bill and Jay have been in those offices for years and look at the mess our criminal justice system is in!

I have actually been able to speak with both Angela Corey. Angela believes the SAO can and should do a much better job of prosecuting criminal offenders. She is also tired of the revolving door of justice. She believes that the SAO and JSO should be part of a partnership to reduce crime and vigorously prosecute criminals and shouldn't be at odds with each other as they have been in the past. Matt Shirk has NO qualifications to be PD. Conservative Republican or not, he has no business being PD. He is not qualified for Death Penalty cases, he has only been on the bar 9 years. He can barely manage his own finances, forget the largest law office in Jacksonville.

I have read every post on this page, I have listed my problems with Mr. Shirk. I am also a conservative. Mr White is liberal, so what, he is an outstanding attorney who has served the Public Defender's office well for over 30 years.
Mr. Shirk is not qualified to be Public Defender. Please tell me how he will be able to run the office when he is not even qualified to defend in a Death Penalty case? He has never run an office of over 2 people. What are his qualifications to be Public Defender? You sound like an Obama Supporter, "Change, change change"

You may not be an Obama supporter but you have the same priorities.
Who cares if he is QUALIFIED to try a death penalty case in the MURDER CAPITAL OF FLORIDA. It is time for change.
Who cares if he has never run a law office, but is running to head thwe largest "firm" in the states largest city. It is time for change.

The Public Defenders in this town are the best in the state, you will likely get a better defense for a serious crime there than from a private attorney short of Hank Cox.
