Over the weekend, at an estate sale in northern Kentucky, I purchased a green depression glass advertising dish from the Oakes Mfg. Co. Inc., in Tipton, Ind. I have searched it online and have found nothing about it. Does anyone know anything about this company? What did it produce? Is it still in business? I would appreciate any history regarding the company.

The dish was probaly made in Greencastle, Ind,. Might try and goggling it and see what comes up. Lived in the tipton area from 1958 to 1977, and can't really remember where or what it was. Might contact the Tipton BBB or Chamber or Commerece. Good luck, my grandmother had a bunch of this glass, and it was beautiful. |

Thanks for the help! I love the depression glass, but the pieces that were created for advertising are even more interesting than the normal glassware. |

Oaks used to build fire trucks at the north end of Sweetland Ave Tipton Indiana. Can't remember the year, probably in the 70's, moved it's operation to either georgia or florida. Tipton historical society, library, may have more of what you are looking for. |

I beleive they moved to kissimmee, florida. they were a division of FMC,They moved part of the company in the late seventies and the rest in the mid to late eighties. Thanks for jarring my memory |

I was just checking out Oakes Mfg. I have an egg scale, my grandmothers, made by them. I'm guessing it was for the 40's.

Need to correct myself, all they made was products for chicken and stock, talked to my dad about it. He's about 80 and lived in this area all his life. |

What you have is the bottom of a Chicken waterer.
An inverted glass jar with water is placed on the "dish" and it is then self feeding water as the chickens consume it. |

I worked at the Oak's Mfg Company in the office in 1968 and it was a manufacturer of small farm equipment. I think about 1969 they started up FMC a company making fire trucks. Later it went out of business and moved the line to Florida. My boss was Kenny Zoladeck. Even forgot how to spell his name now after so many years but he was the best boss I ever had. It was on the corner of Sweetland. I believe the building is still there. Many things have occupied the building.

My husband bought an antique egg scale with a lable saying "Oakes Mnfg Co., Tipton, Ind. USA." I, too, would like to know more about what was manufactured there and when.
