I figured it would've been worse this year since Palmer Fest got so out of hand.

I wish they would stop this stupid party. I hate Halloween here in Athens. Every year hordes of idiots descend upon our town and treat it like a freaking toilet. They damage property, piss off locals, and treat our town like it's their own little sandbox.
Wish they'd just stop having the block party. It's a drain on our police force and a drain on the city's budget. We get very little in revenue, while OU charges guests to stay in the dorms and they actually make cash on the festival even though they don't "sanction" it |

Sounds like every home OSU football game. Grown men and women urinating in front of everyone, vomiting all over the place from too much to drink, stumbling about into traffic causing accidents, littering everyywhere... This happens several weekends in the fall, not just one weekend day a year. The police here are brought down to campus from all over the city, causing the real citizens of Columbus to be pushed aside while the game goers have their security. What a joke. Why doesn't OSU have to pay for all of the officers being put down there instead of the taxpayers of Columbus? The same goes for al of the stupid festivals,(Heritage, Latino,...) What a waste of money and resources. |

I wouldn't let my son go to this University for the sole reason that this event occurs yearly. At what point will the University community step in and take steps to prevent this from occurring? Not everyone participating attends the school, but what steps have they taken to discourage student participation or educate on the consequences of underage drinking? OU is known statewide as the "party" school. Perhaps that image is good for them to encourage enrollment?

I think that it is wrong of you to judge the entire school.... it is what you teach your children before they go away to college. I have a son there that has never attended a party, but chose to go there because they have a great engineering program and he didn't want the "crime" from the big city that others have... There is more crime at many "big name colleges" in Ohio. It is a shame that everything that happens in Athens is considered "OU". Most of the time, the things that happen are from students attending parties at OU, but they attend another college. It is reported as "OU" just because it happened in Athens... Shame, shame. They offer a great education for those who want to learn. A party for those who don't. It is in every school, just not as publicly reported. |

Well they offer several wholesome events on Halloween weekend to present a fun option for those who don't wish to get wasted and stumble around court street. They also force all guests to wear a wristband and be registered as a guest to stay in the dorms and they have only one exit unlocked so all people going to and from the dorms are checked out before they head to their rooms. OU has done a very good job of educating students on the dangers of binge drinking. They hold workshops in every residence hall warning of the dangers of the block party, how to avoid trouble with the law, and what to do if you are arrested. I think they handle the block party as a university in the most responsible manner they can. Unfortunately it's usually the out of town idiots who decide that Athens is toilet for them for the weekend and they trash the place and the locals are forced to pick up the mess. I will also state an OU alum that I've got one of the best educations for my program in the country and I also have been to much more wild parties at Kent State, Miami of Ohio, and OSU. At least I've never witnessed anyone doing coke at OU parties or seen anyone stabbed at a party. Can't say the same thing for other schools I've visited friends at and parties I've been to. I'd rather see students drinking than risk being shanked or shot on campus by some druggie for my ipod. |

That is a pretty poor reason to not let your son attend that school. The school puts on several activities throughout the weekend for students, if they choose not to participate in the Halloween Block Party. Yes, OU is known as the "party" school, because that is what the Princeton Review has published. Did you know Ohio State is not counted in that particular ranking? Underage drinking occurs at every University, Community College, and a majority of the High Schools. OU also has a three strike policy, so once you have been caught drinking underage three times, you are out. I participated in 4 years of the Halloween Block Party and a majority of the delinquents were not OU students. So if you will not let your son go to college that participates in underage drinking, I am not sure if you will find that place. |
