This customer refuses to condone your practice of selling puppies at your Lakeside location. What you are doing is supporting the local Puppymills and Back yard breeders . Shame on you. All in the name of a buck. Why not support our animal shelters and find those dogs homes. I will take my business elsewhere.

I bought a Yorkie for $650 from Pauley's about 8 yrs ago before I knew anything about puppy mills. I bought her as a companion to another older Yorkie I had rescued. Little "Rosie" stole our hearts, we loved her so, she was my husband's little girl from the start. She slept under his arm everynight. But after a very few years, she began having seizures which progressed over time. We spent over $7000 over a two year period and many long stays at the Emergency Care Vet Hospital. Finally,after many expensive tests,they
were able to determine that she was suffering from a genetic liver disease. We finally had to put our little "Rosie" down to end her suffering. We had her 7 short years which is very young for a small dog, they can and should live to be over 20yrs. I got out her AKC papers and decided to trace her breeder which turned out to be a "Puppy Miller" in Southern Virginia. Pauley's will tell you that he only gets his puppies from local breeders that he approves of, he is a liar. The guy that ran this puppy mill was cited and fined $10,000 for breeding dogs in deplorable conditions. Unfortunately, these people will just go set up another business in a relatives name. I too was saddened and appalled to see that "Fin & Feather" was selling puppies! The only way to stop them is to stop buying puppies!!! If someone wants a small breed dog, there are so many rescue organizations online that have them up for adoption. But, they are usually not going to be puppies. People don't realize puppies only stay puppies for a very short time, when you adopt an older dog, you usually don't have to go thru all the potty training. Also, I'd like everyone to know that having papers means nothing!!! AKC, or whatever they say can be gotten by anybody, means nothing as to the health and good breeding of the puppy.

this is late in coming, but the Fin & Feather in Ashland is not owned by the same gentleman who owns the Lakeside branch. They USED to be.

In defense of BOTH Fin & Feather locations, I seriously doubt either would ever make the mistake of purchasing their puppies from an unreliable source. The original F&F has a wonderful reputation and has been around far too long to risk losing that in the name of pure greed. Fin & Feather Lakeside has been owned by the same man, Melvin Major, for decades. He is still there. The Ashland location is owned by a guy named Mark. Mark worked at the Lakeside location for years, learning everything he knows from Melvin. I would trust either of them with any question I have regarding animals. I would also trust them NOT to put their financial gain over any animal's welfare. Please, let's be fair. Not every pet store is a shady operation.

I can't speak for Fin'n Feathers I have purchased bird food from them for years. I did however purchase a Maltese (the only type that I'm not allergic to) from Pauleys Pups, she died 2 months later due to a genetic liver shunt. It was very hard to go through. They "replaced" her, now 1 month ago I lost her, she was 2 years and 3 months old. I don't know what happened to her. I miss her terribly, rest assured I will NEVER step foot into Pauley's Pups again. I have found out that he has been shut down numerous times. Hanover/Ashland needs to close him down permentaly for the sake of the animals. They shouldn't have to keep suffering so this man can get rich. I will get another Maltese, but this time it will come from a reputable breeder. And just so everyone knows Fish Tales in the East End (the store has been around for 20 years or so now) also carry puppies - USDA licensed. STOP THE PUPPY MILLS!!!

For all of you idiots...they do infact sell puppies from REAL breeders. Until you watch the owner of Fin and Feather go to Pauley's and pick up puppies you need to shut your mouth! you know nothing. I bought a puppy from both locations (w. broad and lakeside) and my puppies are great. they are akc registered and I have family trees for both of them. So stop you snobby little attitudes and be a human. People like you guys are what ruin the world.

Lisa....do your research...REPUTABLE breeders do not sell their puppies to places like Paulie's or Fin and Feather...so you shut your mouth...AKC papers mean nothing, pay a fee get your papers...people like YOU ruin the world for supporting the PUPPY MILLS come back and talk to me when you have educated yourself.

We bought our pekapoo from Pauley's pups in Sept 2001. Our puppy, Lizzy has been great. She's been a member of the family for almost 9 years with no medical problems. Thanks Pauley Pups.

Fin and Feather does sell puppies from mills. I bought one and tracked down the so called breeders. They are a puppy mill business.

What happens to the puppies that are returned for a full refund after 10 days if a vet finds medical problems, per Pauley's business policy? Does Pauley's pay for the sick dog to be made well, or does the sick dog get resold to another unsuspecting person? Does the puppy get shot in the head or killed in another way to get rid of it? Remember, these puppies are living, breathing, creatures that feel pain and fear. They are not TVs or computers that can be exchanged for a new model without consequence. Check out a new book called "Saving Gracie" to read the story of a rescued puppy mill breeding dog and learn more about puppy mills. Think long and hard before deciding to get a dog. You should be prepared to take care of the dog his/her whole life, through old age and infirmity. If you can't agree to that, you should not have a dog or any animal.

we went to paulies pups as recommended by a co-worker and were taken aback when asked to put on gloves and an apron before handling the puppies.

We took that as a sign of care on the part of the caretakers, but is that normal?

If they are a face front for selling puppies from those awful puppy mills, is there another alternative for finding puppies from a good breeder? Is it common practice for breeders to sell to the public? We are doing our research before we buy our first puppy and would love some information.

Chuck.. most of Pauleys pups..not all.. come in sick. Wearing aprons and gloves is a nice ploy so they can say that the sicknesses come in on potential owners. That can happen.. but a good cover up for them!! By all means..please stay away from them. Small dogs have an assortment of health problems..liver shunts, luxating patellas, avascular necrosis all which are said to be genetic. Puppy mills don't care what they are breeding. If you have a ton of money for operations shop at Pauleys Pups..if not pay the price from a reputable breeder that has a health guarentee. Trust me..speaking from experience..bought mine from a man in powhatan then later found out he gets his dogs from puppy millers! My pup wil be getting her first operation at 10 months. DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM PAULEYS PUPS ...just because one of your friends got a healthy pup doesnt mean you will!!!! A neighbor up the street just bought a pup from Pauleys..and low and behold it has kennel cough!!! That comes straight from the filthy conditions of puppy mills!!

I recently met someone that bought a puppy from Pauleys, a Yorkie Maltese mix. The puppy ended up very ill after 2 vet visits they realized the poor puppy is diabetic, the puppy was returned to Pauleys, only for him to resell the puppy to someone else!! BEWARE their business is very shady and that is unethical in so many ways!2208

I too bought a Yorkie puppy from a guy in Powhatan. By the time she was 6 months old she was walking on 3 legs..turns out she had "legs perthes disease" and a major operation by the time she was 11 months old". Very sad and unfortunate for both her and I! Do not buy from Pauleys pups or any store that sells puppies! If you cannot meet the mother and father of the puppy you don't want it. Sad but true..these puppy makers do not care about genetics or the conditions they live. You may have been a lucky one but be prepared to pay thousands of dollars in vet bills and operations and physical therapy when things do go wrong without a health guarantee! I will never by a puppy again without seeing both parents! Cute took over in my Yorkies case and I already new better! Never again! Speaking from experience, don't do it![QUOTE who=. You shouldn't condone, encourage people to buy from these horrible places. You are indeed lucky you have had no problems. Do a search on puppy mills and see for yourself the deplorable conditions they live in. Be educated before you encourage others. Just saying...
