If they were honest, they would say the following: "we regret cutting the D.A.R.E. program, but the truth of the matter is......it never did accomplish anything and it never worked to begin with......we just wasted HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF TAX DOLLARS on a program that has been virtually useless the entire time..."

It's a failed program. No loss at all. Cops should be patroling the streets, not playing teacher!

I sat in a classroom where the DARE officer told students that if their parents drink more than twice a month, they are alcoholics.
Good riddance to a bad program.

For many, many years the research has clearly shown that the D.A.R.E. program does not achieve any meaningful, lasting outcomes. It only continues to get funded because of politics. Good for the sheriff and probably good for the kids.

DARE was a uninformed, failed, politically correct program, just like abstinence only. If you look at society they NEVER worked.

Note to Cpl. Zach Scott, who reportedly said "...most studies don't take into account the letters that students write or comments they share on how an officer's advice kept them out of trouble": You suffer from the same problem that afflicts far too many in the general public. You don't understand scientific research, preferring instead to rely on purely anecdotal "evidence". Nobody disputes those good news stories you cite, but they DON'T prove a thing about the general effectiveness of D.A.R.E. Most, if not all, such studies say this well-intentioned program simply doesn't work -- and anecdotes don't disprove these studies.

It's an expensive PR program for law enforcement. Plus, it is an easy paycheck for those assigned, and creates more dues paying union members.
Too bad it doesn't work, and a waste of money. However, this is the new America, where results do not matter, only feelings.

Well sorry to read this ! Education of this is very good. But there's teachers there with degree's who can handle it. Afte all most cops go to tech. school. Who's the better teacher ? I really think this is a waste of money and more P.R. matter for the cops. Sense it was implemented has it stopped, slow downed, elimimated the use of drugs ? I say No it has NOT!

Timmy Just a little wager. My bet is those tech school cops probably have a better education than you, It's called education in the real world and comes with plenty of hands on experience.

I remember being told in Ashland DARE class that you could die from smoking marijunana just once. I was also said that it was highly addictive. You know, kids aren't stupid. If you feed them complete bullshit, they'll figure it out. Now you've only succeded in losing all credibility.

That is what their aim and intent is, that is what they say they do, but what we're talking about here is what their actual results are. Do you have any evidence to support that DARE is actually effective or are you just looking at as "oh, an anti-drug program, that sounds great..." Another thing I was thinking about DARE.., I liked how they always had some cool sports car as the DARE-mobile that was supposed to have been confiscated from a drug dealer. It was like, "hey kids, if you sell drugs you can drive a Porsche!"
