Fighting overdevelopment requires citizen involvement

Full story: Asheville Citizen-Times

This summer I led a downtown protest ritual to save intertwined magnolia trees from death by a developer's chain saw and express the outrage citizens feel about officials' secret sale of our public parkland to ...

Good article, Dixie.

The Stompers and their ilk don't care that Stewart Coleman wants to build on the park. They don't care that they can't spell the word candidate. They're not interested in tolerance, diversity, or religious freedom.

They're theocratic ultraconservatives who care only about hurting those they disgree with. If it's not Republican, and it's not Christian, then they hate it.

""...County commissioners have publicly expressed regret over their legally questionable sale. Pack’s heirs are suing Coleman, contending that the deal breached their ancestor’s deed...""

and just perhaps they should sue the commisioners for their stupidity...ohhh no, then all of Buncombe could jump on that band wagon!!

The tree is a symbol of things that many of us do not want destroyed. Why cannot Coleman find another place for his fancy condo's?---say in Tim-Buck-Two? I hope the Pack family keeps this lawsuit going for years.

Great letter!!

If you want to have any imput in your community you should be ACTIVE in your community.

As far as development goes, I think that the only thing that will slow it down is zoning and new laws.

As long as people are buying houses the houses will be built.

As far as the radical activism goes(burning down other peoples houses, destroying construction equipment)that goes a bit too far. I'm pretty sure that if I caught someone burning down my family's house I would kill them.

http://www.tigersurvey.com/survey.php...

This is a link to a survey for Asheville & WNC residents. This survey will help understand the needs & wants of the people that live here it is also a way for you to voice your opinion. This survey will also help to understand the differences between those who are born here & those who have moved here. PLEASE be absolutely honest in your responses to the questions. Faking or lying in your responses will not help with understanding the needs of the people here.

How will the survey ''help with understanding the needs of the people here"?

What differences do you hope to spotlight?

The survey is condescending to the natives, and is apparently produced by an uneducated non-native.

Your survey is long, offensive, and asks for far too much personal information. "Did you earn your money on your own or was it given to you in a trust fund?" Good lord. I've worked for every cent I've spent since leaving my parent's care at age 16, and I can't believe the presumption and arrogance that went into making that.

In fact this survey is a product of a born native of Haywood co who's family has lived in the same town for the past 9 generations. Why would you think otherwise? I think it is just as condescending if not more so to the transplants

The reason for the questions that you all seem to find so offensive is to understand the difference between the locals & the transplants.

I believe that most locals are hard working people that have had to work hard most of their lives for everything they have but a lot of the transplants have been given money such as trust funds & parents paying for their college & cars.

The reason for the personal questions is to know personal things about the people who live here to understand the differences between locals & transplants.

If you are offended by the survey then you do not have to answer the questions. It was not meant to offend anyone, local or transplant. it was meant to understand the differences

So your right the questions to support your believes. What is a transplant? I was born in another state but my children were born at Mission. Our they local?

If the sell of the county owned property was advertised in this paper was it a secret?

"Despite The Stompers’ attempt to malign us, ever since the rite I’ve heard from countless supportive citizens angered that, with no public input, our county manager and commissioners sold the greenspace the trees call home (deeded in perpetuity to the public more than a century ago by philanthropist George Willis Pack) to developer Stewart Coleman, who intends to sacrifice the living beings and erect a condo to shelter rich people."

Can anyone tell me what time the sacrifices start? Will there be any virgins?

And does it matter whether it shelters "rich" or "poor" people? Would you like it better if the building was going to be a public housing project?

Interesting...

I'm not sure what the point of this article was. Was it save the tree? Was it vote for Elaine? Was it stop development? Was it hate Pac’s? Was it support the Pack's, or save the park? I'm pro trees / pro development; there is a balance between the two. Perhaps Dixie should take advantage of the blue moon, and lose some of this negative energy. Just my two cents, everybody has opinion.

So you admit the survey is biased and written to provoke a desired response?

That's bad, bad research methodology. And the survey itself is filled with misspelled words, making it hard to take seriously.

I think your opinions are outrageous generalizations.

A transplant is someone who was not born here but choose to move here for what ever reason however if you were born somewhere else out of state & you moved here as a small child 13 or younger then you could possible be considered a native

YOU are not a native but your children are first generation in your family that can call themselves natives as long as they live here most of their lives

the questions are not designed toward any belief. almost every question has a blank space where you can type in any answer you want if the answer you have is not provided & at the end of the survey there is a question asking if you have any comments you want to make about the survey or anything you feel you need to say.

You have the freedom to answer as many of the questions you desire & respond to that question however you feel you need to.

Dang--so the cutoff is 14 years of age?

So my younger, cruder, and less intelligent brother can be called a "native" but I can't because I moved here at 14? I had always wondered about that.

The problem for me is that the rhetoric this lady wants to use to fight this is so over the top and ridiculous, it makes me and others like me write you off as a nutjob. The fight over the damn tree is so obviously disingenuous - how many bugs and worms did you kill dancing around the tree doing your stupid little chant? Aren't those living things too? Yet you could give two shits about them, because it doesn't serve your political cause. You're mad because you hate successful people. Admit it.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Sagittarius

If you have any worries or problems today, a close colleague could have the answers you seek. Work will be satisfying, and anything to do with children should be very rewarding today. There could be friction with a relative, but it's nothing serious and things will sort themselves out in due course. Again, you must pay attention to your health, Saggitarius: skin infections are a strong possibility at the moment.
