More changes than this one but this is the one with a big impact.

ARLINGTON -- A proposal to relax the school district's dress policy against fashionably torn pants got ripped by the school board Saturday.
Trustees deleted it from a short list of revisions to the 2010-11 student code of conduct, saying such attire is inappropriate and conflicts with the district's mission of preparing students for the workplace.

In other action on code provisions, the board:
Added wording to clarify that cyber-bullying and sexting -- sending sexually inappropriate messages via cellphone -- are prohibited.
Included information about teen court to the code and requested that the information be added to the district website as well.
Eased a standard for justifying self-defense. Previous policy said students could fight only to prevent immediate "serious bodily injury" or death. The revision de-leted "serious" but added that students can't claim self-defense if they don't try to avoid the confrontation, or if they provoke it or don't allow their would-be assailant to walk away from it.

Just curious, Arl Mom, are you for or against the new changes?
I would personally like to seen school uniforms for all high schools and junior highs. By that, I mean, simple clothing -- regular jeans, khaki slacks, golf-type shirts. It would level the playing field and stop some of the skin shows.

They tried uniforms in junior high and nobody would go for it. So, they stopped. I don't see the need in uniforms. Makes parents have to buy uniforms and regular clothes. Waste of time and money.

Years ago uniforms worked. They no longer equalize the enviroment at school.....

The whole idea was for all of the kids to be dressed the same - pretty straight forward. But these days, every designer under the sun sells "uniforms" and their logos are plastered everywhere.

So you still have little Betsy in her Walmart uniform and right next to her is little Tiffany wearing her Hollister uniform.

I guess I don't understand the discussion regarding the attire at all and this is why. Have you been at Bowie lately? There are students dressed like gang members, many students with their pants falling beneath their ..., students wearing chains, coming to school wearing bathroom slippers, etc. What does the staff do about the saggy pants for example? Tells the students to 'pull 'em up' But you know what, they ain't staying up.

The board can talk and make all decisions they want but I consider this hypocritical. The superintendent's office or the board don't appear to do much, if anything, to make Bowie to enforce the dress code.

It is laughable to read the Bowie policies in the school's Official Handbook. They need to take dress code portion of the Handbook out completely if they will not or can not manage to the policy.

Could it be that they are afraid of upsetting the student/parent and potentially lose the revenue stream for the student if he/she leaves?? Just wondering....

Daily Horoscope for February 13

Scorpio

Resistance from others arises with regard to your efforts. You may strike trouble with in-laws or close associates and there could even be a move against you. Take the time to consult with everyone about what they want and then try to work in with them. If you have any problems with legal people or folk from overseas, tread carefully. Don't let your lifestyle betray your beliefs.
