You obviously have never known someone who has done their time and wants to get a job once out to support their family. Your solution would be to shoot on sight anyone caught with as little as a speck of (non-marijuana) drugs on them? Because any amount of possession of a controlled substance, no matter how small, is a felony in Texas. Brilliant solution, sad thing is you aren't alone.
Just offend again and go back, I mean how bad is it? No house payment, no utility bills, free cable, free meals cooked and served to you, sleep as much as you want, no monthly fitness charges, hang out with company of your own kind, sex available 24/7 and you don't need to worry about your wife or girlfriend because their needs are getting met while your away and (since your stupid enough to be a felon) your probably stupid enough to believe their letters that say hey baby I miss you so much and I promise to be faithfull to you until your sorry ass gets out.

You all raise good and bad points. I just pray that you never find yourself, your family, or your friends appreciating our random act of kindnesss, intended to [simply] help our fellow Americans...I'm typing this, as I am [currently] watching Fort Worthians open their hearts to fleeing Texans from Hurrican Ike...now there's a novel idea...do until others, as you would have them do unto you. Moreover, we never set out to reward illegal behavior or circumvent personal responsibility, as there are some previously-incarcerated-person s (PIPS) who do not deserve a second chance. Individual responsiblity and accountability ALWAYS COMES FIRST. But, when do we remove the scarlet letter???? The X. I respectfully invite you all to visit www.tarrantcounty.com and select Reentry Initiative icon on right to educate yourself...

The main problem is that due to prohibition our jails are overcrowded and most of the violent offenders have not paid their price to society. they have made a small down payment and then got released early.

WOW~! its funny how some people can be so self righteous about people that have felonies. funny thing is that most of these jerks just havent gotten caught @ what they have done. i am a felon and was only 19 when i got my case, and YES i was stupid, who knew that you could catch a burglary case for breaking into your own apartment 3 days after your roomate kicked you out and changed the locks??!!(i was still on the lease and the phone was still in my name, but i admitted that i had taken up residence some where else in those few days, so it was deamed that i no longer resided there) lol sent to jail for getting my mail and a couple of boxes of underwear and make up!!!! and FYI, i went to prison after violating my probation, once again stupid and didnt know the rules. this time i just didnt have the money to feed my son and pay the 90 dollars a month for my probation fees, so off to TDC i went. but i tell you since then i have worked for such reputable companies as sprint, chase and first american...all of which know of my past and give me a chance because i have proved that i am not what the stero type says i am. so all of you people out there that want to shoot us and bury us under the jail walk up to my kids and my husband and my mother and my pastor and my boss.. and tell them that i am worthless because i made some bad choices. lol bet you would be the one that felt worthless after that. peace be with you, hopefully one day you or someone in your family will not have to live through the nightmares that the texas penal system rains down on the families here in texas. GOD BLESS

Hmmm.. traffic ticket.. I'd hire, but not to drive my vehicles. Felons, no chance. Prisons should reflect AZ where you break rocks and eat bologna. Screw all this reform crap-- sometimes a criminal is just a criminal and SHOULD have gotten a death penalty (which is much cheaper on tax money than a "life" sentence). I say toss a shard in the yard and reduce the prison population.

That's a lie, which lies are really common with felons and I've seen too many that do get a job to prove themself and screw it up again and again. Hopefully all you repeat felons can repeat enough to get locked up until you die in prison.
lol so you have been around a lot of felons huh? seems to me that you have found your dating pool? maybe they all repeated a crime to get away from your nasty little self!

Oh sure we have supported them in prison for the last year to twenty five years and now we are going to waste more of the tax payers money to find them jobs.

Deadbodies write something to the effect you obviously have never known anyone that did their time and is coming out wanting to make a new life for themselves.

In answer to that, no I do not associate with that type of person. If a person is commiting crimes that are considered a felony you would be aware of what they are doing. If you are aware, you either get as far away from that person or persons or you turn them into the police. If you are waiting for them to get out of prison then you knew them before they went to prison. Wrong I do not assosciate with that type of person.

I do not claim to be any better than any other person. I was raised with morals and have kept myself out of trouble for my whole life. I do not associate with the criminal element nor do I except the criminal element.

The judicial system is too easy on the criminals as it is. A lot of those getting out should not ever get out and they are going to end up right back in anyway after they get caught again.

If our court system was doing as it should do there would not be the swinging doors of our prisons. The true felon, the man or woman that killed should be put to death. The man or woman that rapes another person, should be put to death. The person that beats a parent, a friend and unknown person to them to the point they may not live, but they do. The perpitrator of that should be put to death. These are the people who have no concept at all for human life and do not care about anyone but themselves.

Laura,

There are extenuating circumstances to every case. You were a victum of the screwed up judicial system. You were not and are not a harden criminal. My prior post was pertaining to the harden criminal. The shooter in a drive bye, the man that breaks into a house and beats the homeowners to death or to within an inch of the life. The constant bank robber, the burlar that continues to live off your hard earned belonging etc.

You my dear as stated before are a victum of the judicial system that sucks and needs to be changed to the real court system not the today high paid attorneys. You have your case heard before a jury of your peirs and all evidence be admisable. When you are sworn in in the courtroom you are asked to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God. So why are all of the facts not amissable and the trial be of all the evidence not just that of which the attorneys don't object to etc.

Bring back our true court system. This will end a lot of this crap.

Why do so many companies hire illegals that can provide no identification, no background check, etc? Seems a lot less risky than the kid that was jailed for possessing pot. There are lots of jobs out there that can be done without being a risk. We have people running this country in congress that have done worse than a lot of this EX felons.
Because the illegals are willing to do the s.h.i.t. work and felons aren't.

so if you have a person that committed a crime that has changed their life, pais their debt to scociety and is qualified for a job, you would give it to someone lets say "less qualified" just because they didnt have a record? that my friend is just bad business sense. lol we have an ex president that smoke pot, of which possession is a felony in most states, we have people from all walks of life that either dont have a record and should,or have a record and are reformed....most of the time by looking @ someone and talking to them you would never know. i know pastors that are felons, chemical dependency councelors, civil rights activists. dont discount the value of a person that has a record, discount the people that dont want to reform. there are countless on both sides of the fence. clumping us all together because of one common factor is like saying all blacks, hispanics or other nationalities are alike because they are the same race. its just ridiculous.

so what would you have people that have paid their debt to society do? you dont want them to work...you will scream if they collect welfare, then you condemn them if out of desperation they steal something, you cry about having to "support" them while they are in prison...what would you like to do with everyone? do you have a contigency plan? hmmmm sounds like the best possible solution is....duh...get a frickin JOB!

no devils advocate, my husband (also an ex felon) and i have both done our fair share of s.h.i.t. work to get by and get to where we are today. they hire the illegals because they are cheaper, dont usually complain to the authorities about mistreatment, and they dont have to offer benefits. also they do it a lot of times because they arent reporting all of a companies assests and earnings, therefor they dont want to have employee wages on paper...oh lookie there...an employer commiting a felonY!!!!

Heres a better job opportunity for all the poor felons out there....how about testing the efficiency of shotgun ammo to head? Or experimental drugs and their side effects...or crash test dummies..the possibilities are endless.
