Massachusetts schools brace for deep cuts

Full story: The Boston Globe

School administrators across the state are crafting bleak budgets for the next school year and warning of steep cutbacks, including teacher layoffs, to cope with a probable sharp drop in funding from Beacon Hill and dwindling federal stimulus money.

What a travesty that we are cutting funding for our top schools while our police departments run fat and lazy on huge salaries which are over six figures in most cases and massive pensions.

They cry and whine about their Quinn Bill which is a load of crap payoff for chiefs to make money teaching classes. Check out this report:

http://www1.whdh.com/features/articles/specia...

Meanwhile, we continue to tolerate abuse of civil rights in our local forces, hidden by chiefs (and retired chiefs), good old boy, above the law attitudes and a true belief that they are entitled to do with their power whatever they want.

When will Massachusetts get their heads out of the sand?

The same way it happened in France, UK, hell, all of Europe, Venezuela, and on and on and on. Complacency of the people. Letting our rights be chiseled away at one at a time, bit by bit. The constitution being ignored and our sovereignty undermined. We're on a slippery slope, and the people have begun to wake up just in time. The week before the election I cashed in lots of my gold and silver and bought food and ammunition in case the election had gone the other way.

People don't realize just how close we are to losing our country as we know it. Wake up. Wake up your family. Wake up your friends. Knowledge is power. Don't let them divide us into Democrats and Republicans. Gays and straights. Black and white. Because the only division which will matter in the end is the Haves and have nots. And WE are by FAR the have nots.

Turn off the boob tube, and learn what's happening to us with the internet and books. The are free at the library, and have been since ancient times, though the liberal progressives would like to take credit for that. If it seems like the government progressives are trying to intentionally bankrupt us... start reading here. http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/02/the_cl...

I'm not sure if I agree with everything that you say but one thing is sure and that is that our constitution is being ignored by police whose powerful unions dictate their freedom from obeyance of the law and respect for civil rights.

Well, that's one great thing about America. You have the right to not agree with anyone under the first amendment (so far). I'd be glad to discuss with an open mind anything I said which you think is not true.

That said; I have never been a fan of police, though I respect the job they do, I have never needed one. I think people who depend on police should pay more for their services in the way of a fee or tax (and I hate fees and taxes) so that those of us who seldom or never require police help or assistance can get a break. Why should I pay for some somebody wo calls 911 every time they hear a bump in the night because they are too lazy/cheap to have their own security/weapons in their home, or the people who drive like idiots and crash their cars,,, see where that's going? Contrary to common belief, police are not required to "serve and protect" us as individuals, only as a society, the common good.

Many police and military, even retired, are joining THIS group. I wish they all would.

Surprise! Governor gave all the money in the world to the schools today. The teachers union is always the first to start crying that the kids will suffer, and then the teachers get their raises, and the union donates to the Democrats, and lo and behold, the kids suffer anyway.

Oh ya. Lets throw in $65,000,000 for immigrant health care while we're at it Gov.. How about we send all these good folks home now, so we can get America back on track. Half a million immigrant workers Bush lets come here in 2009 when we're at over 10% unemployment.

This government is out of control and the day of reckoning is at hand. Coupe DeValle, we have you in our sights at the polls. Hope you do well in you next new job.

all I can say is thank god they are not cutting funding for the Lexington Schools. LHS was rated among the top ten in the state and the quality of the schools greatly affects the value of our home prices. On the other hand, all of the cut backs that government recognizes have to come, tightening the belt, not just trimming fat but eliminating it, being respectable and transparent goes out the window when it comes to police.

why is this, please do tell me?

our police force is known for being one of the worst in the state, not that others are so wonderful. rumors of abuse cover up, misuse of power, complete lack of transparency and community oversight, strong armed unions keeping salaries very high.....much higher than schools....much!

I dont get this at all. We pay taxes to be fairly protected and governed and we hold all aspects of government accountable (at least we should!) but for some reason our police forces are not and they are fat and lazy and frankly, disreputable. If this is a time of change, why will the state not force change and oversight of police forces? please tell me why, Mr. Patrick.

Due to the Chapter 70 state aid formula, "affluent" communities like Lexington get very little of their school budgets via state aid. Most comes from the local tax levy. The irony is when the state gets into financial trouble and cuts state aid, the so-called affluent communities are the least affected.

According to what I am learning, police are not overseen by anyone other than themselves, their unions and the Fraternal Order of Police (sounds like the Royal Order of Water Buffalo, doesn't it?). That means that if there is misconduct within your police department, nobody will review it except other police and we all know how far that will go. Check out this website I found++

http://lawenforcementcorruption.blogspot.com/...

If you have a specific example of police misconduct in Lexington perhaps you might email this guy. You do so at your own peril I presume. Police Unions are notorious for strong arming media to keep them looking white as snow. Maybe that's why there is so little info out there about police misconduct.

We'll all get our chance to tell him what we think very soon. Choose your candidate now and get behind him. Make calls, hand out fliers, send emails, get a yard sign, send a contribution, hold a sign at the poll. We have a few good candidates to choose from this time. Don't waste the opportunity. One arrogant SOB senator told his constituents at a town hall meeting; "We already have term limits. They're called elections."

These damn career politicians think they are royalty.

If the Lexington schools are primarily doing their own funding, then its just logic that if the state cuts aid to less afluent towns, those with more money wont be affected. There certainly is no crime committed by Lexington for bearing the greater brunt of its own school finances. That very fact means that more State funding is available to other towns who need it because Lexington it not using those funds. Remember as well that the more affluent a town, the more it will pay in State taxes per capita, even though a greater proportion of the education tax money goes to less afluent towns. So, towns like Lexington pay twice to help fund education in other towns. This is not irony, but simple math and although in these difficult times it is harder for all to part with our income, it is in the interest of everyone that all children receive an opportunity at a good education, affluent or not.

There has still be major cuts to regional transportation. School budgets in these areas have had to shuffle $$ around (cuts) to now pay for bussing. Patrick is such a LOSER. Can't wait for November.
