San Antonio is not a great place at all. Been there myself many times. It has great shopping and is a large city. It also has six flags. But It has a high crime rate and is the worst city in Texas because of the high amount of illegal aliens living there. And it has a real bad drug problem.

I was thinking about relocating to the Dallas area. I've heard about the critters (snakes, brown spiders, bats, etc.) which I can't stand and high crime areas to avoid (west, south, north). I'm from the Chicago area and I've seen a few tornadoes so I could live with that. But can someone tell me about flooding in the Dallas residential area. What are the low risk areas - for flooding and crime?

My fiance and I are contemplating a move to Texas. I have health problems that make the winters in the Northeast nearly unbearable. We're looking at either the San Antonio or Austin area. How pedestrian/bicycle friendly are these cities? We're hoping to not have to buy another car after we move down there.

Hi All.....My husband and I are considering a move to the great state of Texas. Since neither of us have ever been there, we would like to know the best place to live. Also if your could direct me where I can find property tax info etc. My husband is a crane operator so we are also looking for a job for him. I do merchandising so my job is portable. I so look forward to joining y'all. I can't get out of the Northeast fast enough!!!

Hello, my hubby just inherit his parents house in Greenville, Tx. We are moving there at the end of July. My husband is from Texas but I am from California. I have never been out of the state of California, so you can imagine how nervous I must be. Anywho, I'm just wondering if anyone know how life is in the city of Greenville, tx hunt county. Schools, weather, shopping, crime rate, colleges, job market for nursing, things to do with children, bugs...etc. Thank you kindly for your replies:D

I think if you are from California you would probably find more like minded people in Austin. I moved here from Georgia many years ago and love it. Best of luck in your move and welcome to Texas.

Ruth, I moved to East Texas from California with my family in the 1980s. Texas is cheaper (by far!) and the people are nicer and more religious. This is the "Bible Belt" afterall! I live alone and make only $11.33 an hour and can still afford housing, insurance, electricity (which is high in the summer), and food. It's cheap enough here that I am able save up during the year and go to Europe by myself for two weeks every May! The major CON here is the heat in the summer. We are averaging 108F daily at the moment.

I have lived in Texas my entire life, here is what to expect: the weather is warm in the fall, somewhat cold and windy in the winter, it gets warm fast in the spring and we get some serious storms with tornados (atleast 10 tornado warnings each spring in the DFW area. The rain moves through fast but can be so heavy that you cannot see your windsheild wipers. And the summers are no joke. You will get atleast a couple of weeks over 100 degrees each summer with a lot of humidity. Fireants ruin just about every yard and grassy field. Mosquitos are a problem during spring and summer. We still have 2 drive in movie theatres in DFW. You will be hard pressed to find really open minded people out here but trust me, we're out here. Oh, and just because we talk slow does not mean we are stupid.

Try UCLA or USC in California.

We are wanting to leave ohio and move to texas. We need some outside advice on pros and cons on the move and where in texas would be best to finish raising to ornery teens who ride and are in sports. We will have to sell everything but we will be taking our dogs. Our horses may have to be sold and we will just have to buy others there. Help!

So glad I found this thread! I'm from CT and my family and I have decided to relocate to either the DFW or Houston area. My husband is a civil engineer and the job growth in Connecticut is non existent. Not to mention how difficult it has become to be conservative and Christian in this state.
I guess a few concerns I have is the heat in the summers(I for one will not miss the snow and cold up north) and the fear of not quite being accepted. I do appreciate the feeling of your state being taken over by outsiders since CT has been taken over by impatient New Yorkers, but I'd hate to make such a huge move only to be never accepted. The other concern is finding a job there before moving- I'd love to hear anyone's experience.
We are also a bit concerned about the school systems, not that CT is good, despite what they claim. Next to our Catholicism, education is a top priority for us as parents.
Overall, we are really looking forward to being around people with similar beliefs, and my husband is incredibly excited about the hunting!

If you have a choice, take DFW. It gets really hot and dry, nothing like you have ever dealt with in Connecticut. I lived in Mystic for 2 years. I think you will have no trouble meeting new friends and being accepted no matter where you end up, just remember this is another part of this great country of ours and every part has its own identity. My girls are both in College in Georgia and went through the local school system and I didn't have any complaints. Let me be the first to welcome you to Texas.
