Rehabilitate an animal that is attacking? What, with couples therapy? Seriously, you must be kidding. |
||||
So, there are too many of them. Kill some and there will be enough food for the rest. Not allowing them to be culled causes this problem. |

So Dana, how does it feel to beat off a fox? Crazy hippie chick...... |

You cannot rehabilitate any rabid animal.
Rabies is a slow and painful way to die and "if" the animal is indeed rabid, killing it would actually be merciful. Rabid animals die a horrible death within a week or so and will probably end up spreading the virus to many other animals or humans in the local area. Sadly, the only way to properly diagnose rabies is a method which will kill the animal anyways. What I do not get is why Fish and Wildlife hasn't dispensed rabies vaccine bait throughout the forested region of Arcata. This would prevent any possible rabies from spreading to other animal populations. That is of course if this is rabies being presented in the fox population. With the behavior people are describing, it sure sounds like rabies. These rabies pellets have been proven on the east coast to work well in vaccinating wildlife. They aren't very expensive and would sure beat the amoung of money being spent on vaccinating and treating bite victims whom I will just assume are uninsured (not to sound harsh or anything but not many in this region have private insurance). Either way, I wish instead of tackling this problem by problem, our locals would try to prevent further occurences without culling the etnire mesocarnivore population. |

It's no wonder there is a rabid fox problem in Humboldt Co. All the control methods have been post threat reactions, Like when Heaven the little girl at Trillium Elementary was bitten; There had been a call of a possible rabid fox sighting that was not taken serious enough, especially in such close proximity to an Elementary school. Recently I personally called the Sheriff, animal control, MCSD, and the APD to report a possible rabid fox day sighting. This fox was ran over eventually and lay dead in the street, again I called every agency including the Arcata Eye and Times Standard; The corpse was moved to the side of the road and is now flat in a state of open decomposition on Windsor rd Mck. More recently a fox was killed during the day on the School road bridge in Mck.
Until our local agencies can take proactive and even proper reactive measures to control the rabid fox problem, it will only get worse. |
