To start with known gang members should have ZERO access

The article says it best when it points out that intervention and deterrence from gang membership begins with the parents taking an active part in the life of the child. If that child is busy at home and has something to occupy their time, they will be less likely to look to gangs for their "leadership" or their social compass.

Parents, you are the first and best hope, but not always the last voice heard by a child. Do your best.

I believe if every parent weather they are single, working two jobs now days, have to MAKE time to see what your child is doing. My son now a grown-up thanks me for knowing what he was up to back in the day. He was no saint and I am proud to hear that he is greatful. It is always nice to hear from people who have gone through something to actually talk to a youngster who IS GOING THROUGH IT TODAY...It makes them ( the young adult) feel they have that common bond.

Too many teen pregnantcies and "no name" fathers are creating these roving teenagers, looking for gang association and wrong character development,to be accepted by someone, when it would normally be his parents.

I read somewhere (sorry I don't have a cite for my source) that many professional criminals, who are good at their work, are very careful individuals. They pay their bills, keep a low profile, and don't do all of the things people do to draw attention to themselves. From reading this article, it seems like the same is true for gang members. In the high school and with adolescents in general, there is a trend to glorify prison culture, gang mentality, and a need to display affiliation. From observation, it may be that some of it is wanna-be gangsters, but like Lori Walters says, it's real, watch your kids.

Now, what can be done about those individuals who come from a gang culture? Affiliations are handed down from generation to generation, and yes, there are fathers in these homes. I myself believe that dangerous people exist in and out of gangs and the criminality in today's society is not going to get any better. Sorry that I have to feel that way, but I've worried for a long, long time about the souls of our younger generations.

Just a thought. You have to have a licence to drive a car, purchase a hand gun, hunt a animal, practice medicine, practice law or even do taxes. Yet no licence to be a parent. A lot of people probably would not pass the test to get a parents licence though.

I was in Judge Counts' Court Room one morning when a "Gang Banger" was to be sentenced. A 15 yr old.

He had been incarcerated and was in custody, the parents, sister and another person showed up, the father, mother and the sister all had tatoos, the father with a "Gansta" haircut, cap on backwards, and his cell phone rang!(Cell phone and hat/cap not allowed in the courtroom.)

This kid and his buddies had broken into homes and businesses to steal guns and anything else they could get.

The Judge made me sick to my stomach treating this little hoodlum with more respect than any adult who was there. The defense attorney looked like a displaced hippy and this gang banger got a slap on the wrist for several thefts and break-ins and it was mostly for GUNS!

Nothing in the sentence given was stricter than his parents COULD have given him if they had been "parents" in the first place!

Kids join gangs because they aren't getting the family (or attention) they need at home and a gang provides that family.

OH PLEASE! Kids join gangs because they know they are stupid and will never amount to anything in the future. Have you ever seen a good looking, well groomed, educated , healthy gangster? NOOOOOO!!!! Of course not cause only idiots join gangs and then all the idiots gather together to do idiot things together.

Scot Key ridden out of town on a rail: An idea whose time has come.?
Does anybody see the connection between our gettin' out of town District Attorney, Scot Key, and the rise of gangs in the area under his watch?
Seems to me the boy lawyer has been spending too much time prosecuting police officers, like Billy Anders, and too little time taking care of business.
Too many judges and lawyers are busy protecting the rights of the guilty and violent, while the rest of us have to listen to their lame excuses as vile criminals get a pass to strike again.

Yes, there are gangs and yes, there are parents very much involved with their children and they begat more little gang members. There are 2-3 generations of the same family in prisons and in fact, we take away the freedom of criminals and send them to jail where they run their gang business out on the street from their cell.

Going to prison and being somebody there is a sign of accomplishment, success. Edmundo described the family in court in his post. There is cohesiveness in the gang family both in the home and in the streets. A majority join because they have no home, no family. It is fascinating to me to read about or see on TV the gangsters who have left gangs and I can only wonder about the road that brought them to it.

Drugs are easy to get in prison, easier in fact, than getting them off the street. So, there's a hefty business going on there. This is the culture and it's not going away. Parents aren't going to all of a sudden become white middle class parents and take care of their kids. There is always going to be territory and a gang to fight over it either on the street or in the prison yard.

I'm not sure there is an answer. Oh, one more thing. When I was a teacher I made sure that I always tried my best to respect students, some of them gang members, because they weren't immune to it. They responded fairly well and one day even if their life totally went to hel# hopefully they would remember that someone treated them with respect.

so wicky you saying there are no white gang bangers? and that all middle class are white? and only white middle class can be good parents. that is funny. the gang members who are scary are the ones who have something to prove to others. i grew up in LA and went to public high school. the gang bangers around here have NOTHING in comparison to the ones i dealt with on a day to day basis. a LOT of grandparents are raising kids these days. for whatever reason. the governement is to into NOT letting parents raise their kids. they took all of the power away from them. you cant discipline your kids today without the risk of someone turning you in for child abuse. and you than if you dont discipline your a bad parent. where is the power?

So spanking is the answer for you.Violence only begets violence. I took things away from my daughters and I m very proud of 'em cuz they don't expect things they work for 'em. That's the main problem with our society we are Lazy violent people.

Of course I'm not saying that because that's not what I know or what I believe. I am also well aware that the gang members, or people who think they are gang members have absolutely no clue about the gangs that you're talking about.

"White middle class" is a euphemism for what society believes, not anything else. I don't know what to tell you about disciplining a child. I've tried the wrong way with mine but learned a better way for us. And believe me, grandparents raising their grandchildren is another issue. In this town, there are families who are gang centered. Now, please understand that I'm not making anything more than an observation here. Some of the families are good families. Some of the families who are not gang centered are dysfunctional. It's all in the mix and no judgments are made.

I'm with you on this one classydawg. We are lazy due to the entitlement in this society and the violence is totally amazing and out of control.

Dont be so closed minded. Their are some well groomed gangsta's. And educated too... I mean I am not saying it is right because it is not. But i was born and raised in this town and I know many true gangsta's. You may not know what this means and i understand. They are stupid yes. But they dont go around spray painting things, and vandalizing peoples property. You can't even tell they are in a "gang" Haven't you seen some mafia movies? They stick to their own. Gangs have been around for years, whether people like it or not. You dont have to agree and I am not saying it is right. I am just opened minded and think it s their business. Not everyone was raised to go to school, get married and have 2.5 children. We have to accept things for how they are sometimes..

An emotional situation is as clear as mud today. You aren't sure about your feelings for a certain someone, nor are you convinced that you know what they're playing at. They may be saying one thing and doing another, and you might even suspect that they're playing games with you or trying to get what they can out of the relationship. Or maybe you're imagining the whole thing? Admit it - at this stage you simply don't know.
