I was curious about what new toys the Anna FD currently has it it's fleet that I might have missed. So, a little research turned up the following: 1) 1990 GMC Firetruck 2) 1985 Ford Firetruck 3) 1983 Chevy Brush Truck 4) 1978 Chevy Brush Truck 5) 2000 Ford (290,000 + miles) Support Truck 5)1984 Chevy Suburban 6) 1971 Ladder Truck
The newest purchase is a Polaris used for brush fires bought with their foreign fire tax money, look it up if you don't know where that money comes from. Anna doesn't have a FD web site but if browse other towns in Southern Illinois you will see that Anna's (toys) that are going to save your A## don't even begin to compare.

I agree that the FD could use some updating, no doubt there. Especially after looking at the new cars the PD has, and it's not like they are doing anything to warrant the new cars.

That said, and I know a lot of people aren't going to like this, if the PD would get more active, including writing a ticket or three, some of these issues would be taken care of. There is money to be had by writing a ticket.

Writing a citation or enforcing traffic laws would require work, the simplest answer is to try and pass a sales tax increase to generate $300.000.00 at a time when 70 local people are about to lose their jobs, and the elderly getting no cost of living adjustment in the coming next two years with the state at one of the highest employment rates in the country. Go figure!

effective change , if you want to effect changes why don,t you get all the facts before making your statements. The cities part of property taxes has gone down almost .30 over the last few years . If 1/4 cent sales tax will raise $200000 how much money do you think the city has saved the people. Sales tax is the most fair tax there is because everyone pays a little . This would raise the sales tax in Anna to 7% which is 2-3 cents cheaper that c'dale , Marion , Cape or Paducah. Maybe the tax is better than you thought.

visitor, what you are saying about the sales tax is true. It's a valid point, however, I got to ask what you mean about the property tax. My personal property tax has done nothing but gone up every year, the last 9 years. Who's getting the money? The county?

The sad truth is, the police department isn't going to change anytime soon. Atleast not while people approve of the current way the police "patrol".

Okay so everyone is doubting the effectiveness of the Anna police department. But listen to this:

They drive around and patrol on regular basis, just because you don't see them when you are out doesn't mean they aren't there. Part of being a police officer means not being seen but definately being heard when speaking. Another point is not only does the Anna police department patrol in Anna but the have a combined effort in assisting the County Officers, State Officers, and including other town officers for Cobden, Dongola, and Jonesboro. Also this last weeks combined efforts with the FASTEN enforcement which resulted in the arrests of 15 people involved. As far as the K-9 unit Anna still has it unfortunately the K-9 officer (not Smith but the dog himself) was part of a breed that higher aggressiveness than most German Shepards or other service dogs so therefore for the protection of criminals and citizens alike he was retired and Anna is now on the wait list for a more mildly manner, but still yet enforcing, K-9 officer.

As far as my personal experience outside of work goes....we all have been in trouble once or twice but when I was these officers were enforcing of the law but understanding and un-judgemental of my past. They did their jobs and at the same time didn't look differently towards me. They know that everyone makes mistakes and not all mistakes dictate someones true self. I've socialize with their children of my own age and they didn't do the typical Anna attitude of "she did this 5 years ago she is bad, etc". Anna is full of judgemental hypocrits that think they are better than everyone else because they have "some" money thinking it's big money and they go to church so their slates are clean. Open your eyes people those of us that mess up and forgive ourselves and make better persons of ourselves for it end up much happier in the end and more fulfilled

Now to get to their response, serving and protecting. I work at the county only homeless shelter we all know which one it is. These officers have assisted us with more than 100 cases in my two and a half years here. They are tolerant and enforcing. How they see that their jobs need to be carried out. They were gentle with clients that just needed to be escorted from the property and demanding for the ones that refuse to listen even to the law.

These officers do a great service to everyone in the community whether you "think" you know what's going on or step back and actually see how things are.

Personally THANK YOU to all the officers throughout union county! You serve, protect, and enforce to the best of your abilities!

The K-9 (Barry) was a Belgian Malinois, with a very aggressive and effective attitude which was very appropriate for the work that he was trained to do and the situations that he was trained to secure. Barry was not retired by the Anna Police Department because of attitude issues. Barry passed away in June 2009 due to a stomach torsion (twisted stomach). There have been efforts to get a new K-9, however, the City will not approve it even though Barry was completely (100%) covered by insurance which would cover the cost of the new dog and the training for officer/dog to become a team.

The truth is there are only two that actually patrol Anna. One works the third shift Sat. through Tues. and the other is 2nd shift Fri -Mon.The others drive around but its just to get from one point to the other for their personal gain.

So what you are saying is that you follow around the anna police just to see what they are doing. So I'm glad you have all this free time to do that. Maybe you ought to find something else to do.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Taurus

The current planetary influences tend to make everyone groan a bit. Life is not perfect and may be less pleasant than usual, but what can you do? Get real for one thing! That's the way it is and once you accept this, everything becomes much easier to handle. Be solid and dutiful - qualities for which the Bull is renowned - and you'll come out the other side with your halo polished. Focus on some undeveloped potential in your life and take the first steps towards realising it.
