The Village had nothing to do with the memorial sign other than paying 1/2 of the cost. The sign was initiated by the Town of Evans Historical Society, purchased and erected by the Society. After 141 years of inaction of anyone to memorialize the 1867 wreck the Historical Society felt it was time to act.
