The last time I heard Kansas has an Offical language and it is English. St. Anne's is not a public school, therefore they do not have to give in to the liberal multi-cultural BS. I think I will go and Donate some money to the St. Anne's Legal fund to fight this ridiculous lawsuit.

Sick of these people! Glad the Church finally stood up. We do not know whatr these kids are saying in our schools. I am a teacher at a predominantly mexican school and they may be conspiring to kill us and we would not know.

This is America, English is our language. Catholic schools are not PUBLIC schools and if the Mexicans or any ethnic group choose to attend St. Anne's then let them speak ENGLISH. It is time for the courts to refuse frivolous law suits.

I find it interesting that no one has offered a dissenting opinion. I, for one, will not be that person, and I wanted to say that this is the trade-off of sending your child to a private education. They make the rules regarding their school, not you. Perhaps, if there's a gross violation of the Constitution (which there doesn't seem to be in this case) then things can be changed, but if not, parents are stuck with it. It's like belonging to a private country club - you don't like our policies? There's the door, someone will be along promptly to take your place who won't mind so much.

The manner with which the native-language ban was instituted is significantly more disturbing than the ban itself. A few weeks prior, St. Anne’s held a 90 minute mandatory parent meeting which was presented in three languages, English, Spanish and Vietnamese. This would have been an convenient time to inform parents of the new rule. It would have given them a chance to send their children elsewhere. Instead, it was first enforced by the cafeteria staff six days into the school year. When students inquired about the reason for the rule, lunch room staff stated that they were instructed by Principal, Sr. Margaret.“Because the principal decided this ...Because you are in America... Because other kids may think you are talking about them. I don’t know if you are offending anyone. You might even be cursing.” Countless meetings were held which included parents, staff from St. Anne’s and the Diocese office, the Bishop, Superintendent Bob Voboril, Hispanic Ministries, priests from various parishes, local citizens. Letters were sent locally, nationally and even to the Vatican. Efforts were duplicated and exhausted. After the expulsion, Adam’s father went to St. Anne’s to retrieve Adam’s academic file. He asked the school secretary,“Are there any documents concerning any disciplinary actions?” The secretary stated,“No, I don’t think so but let me ask Sister.“ He proceeded to Sister’s office and repeated the question. She stated,“No, but here’s a Certificate of Academic Excellence for Reading. We were going to present it to him at mass but he will not be there.” Two of the four “alleged bullies” were new and public school transfers. They automatically are placed on probation. Sr. Margaret would assess whether or not they were permitted to stay at St. Anne's. One other boy has had a severe speech impediment his entire life, sought speech therapy and rarely spoke. Adam was the fourth boy with a demerit free record. The English only rule has always applied during instructional times. The new rule includes non-instructional times-recess, lunch and in-between classes. Prior to the school-wide enforced rule, there were no records of bullying or any misconduct. When Adam was expelled for not signing the pledge to speak only English during non-instructional and instructional times on October 12, there were still no known or recorded incidences of misconduct. One should ask,“What is the logic behind a native-language ban requiring a student body, ages 4-13, to address isolated bullying issue that may or may not have been understood? Furthermore, why would Adam be responsible for the reason behind the rule? The Silvas have proactively served the underserved population Wichita environs, Hispanic and non-Hispanic. Furthermore, the Silvas were asked to recruit families to attend St. Anne’s by the school administration. The newly recruited families sought the guidance of the Silvas to understand a rule that was imposed after school already started. Ironically, the very population that qualified St. Anne’s for federal funds have suffered in silence. To add insult to injury, the diocese implicates these children as bullies. In an effort to defend the diocese, spokesperson Fred Solis, continues to damage the character of a young boy who has a clean demerit-free record, as confirmed by the principal and secretary. St. Anne’s is both a school and a church. It is a place where people go to learn and be spiritually fed. Any information provided on their behalf is deemed unquestionable truth. Fred should exercise responsibility without damaging the character of a young boy with false accusations. Whether or not Fred was aware of the abovementioned information, he is responsible for researching all information he publically announces. Additionally, administrators, diocese staff and clergy need to review the ninth commandment required of all parochial school students, Thou shall not bear false witness--or don't lie.
