I live in Santa Cruz and the Cops and Courts section is where most of the racism occurs. Just because you don't perceive the racism in comments like those from Chicana or yourself doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'm sorry you can't appreciate my methods of exposing racist thought.

I urge you to check out The Federalist Papers. Do you even know what that is? The philosophical foundation of our Constitution is based on rapidly published anonymous op-ed pieces.

Im not sure newspaper op-ed pieces from 1787 are really relevant to whats going on today....and honestly even those pieces were selectively published...

Wescruz, you are clearly sarcasm-impaired, for which I am sorry. I was making fun of the "all the brown people should move back to Mexico, even if they are U.S. citizens, because they are all criminals" talk that pervades ALL comments on ALL subjects in the Sentinel comment section.

As far as I can tell, the only substance in these comment sections is: hate hate hate hate. And then hate some more. Then blame the Latinos and students because they MADE you hateful. Because OF COURSE you would NEVER be a hateful sad sorry sack of **** were it not for those OTHER PEOPLE who FORCED you to be a JERK. The point Hitlery was trying to make is that there is a long tradition in the US regarding people publishing anonymously.

The great thing about the internet is that it is free and people don't have to suffer from the oppressiveness of politically correct blowhards who want to censor people every time their feelings are hurt by a few words. John had been struggling and it is beyond what mostpeople can comprehend why he took his life. It is very poor journalism on the Sentinal's part (I hesitate to even capitalize sentinal as it is such a marginal paper). This happened a week ago and his funeral was today. He is a very beloved man in the community and has 2 kids and a wife. If it was news, couldn't have appeared in the last 7 days? Good job.

When you get to the point of thinking about taking your own life, remember that you don't want your life to end, just the problems to end. And what the heck, we can all deal with problems, right?

Hmmm... where's the person who argued with me a while back (when this story was originally posted on the "cops and courts" section) and I asked why this wasn't on the FRONT FREAKIN' PAGE with a sketch?

Yeah... that's what I thought.

Suicide is noble. It is the leading cause of death in America, and the right thing to do when you can no longer do for yourself, and wife & kids are not in the picture.

Suicide is the most selfish act a man can commit when others rely upon him though.

But did Dr. Newman really commit suicide?

I hate to say it, but there are just too many people. I am sorry for his depression, but maybe we should start discussing other ways to handle suicide.

Lets say we offer $20k to the families of anyone who wants to commit suicide. Have a big party for them and their family on TV, culminating with a loving, calm death surrounded by loved ones, or a decision to back out.

Folks who actually did it would be honored for removing the extra load they place on the planet,(thus making the rest of our survival more likely)

Actually, it is Newman who was the coward "Joel". Suicide is a cowardly act especially a man with 2 kids and a wife. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives.
