interesting in comparison to another recent news story- so a parent can be jailed for refusing to send a kid to school, but apparently refusing medical care for your kid with treatable cancer is still up for debate?

There are a lot of parents out there that need to be put in jail and their children taken away but it is not done because bleeding hearts think it is unreasonable, that is until one of them are killed or they kill someone else that is the cycle and will continue to be the cycle until people are held accountable. It is not only the poor that suffer this issue the rich do also they just pay their way out of it.

This is disgusting. You can be thrown in jail now for refusing to send your kids to a failed public school system in which, aside from a piss poor education, all kinds of bad things may happen to, and will happen around them. Get the government out of education- they fail miserably at it, just as they do with everything else. Case in point example: In 2006, U.S. students ranked 25th of 30 advanced nations in math and 24th in science. Read this if you're still not convinced: http://www.creators.com/opinion/walter-willia...

I say good for that prosecutor...maybe if more parents were made to be responisble for their children, the children would grow up to become better adults.Children learn from their parents actions...regardless if their good or bad!

I am under the impression from the article that these were not home schooled children, and that it is the parents fault due to the fact that it is elemantery school, not older children. so yes the parents are at fault. and as far as our schools failing, they can't teach you at all if your not there.

I would just like to say to ceramics1...are you a lunatic! You cant just beat children. and how does beating children have anything to do with the mothers incompetence? Just my advice to you...get a hysterectomy, you dont need children...they will just add to more foster children in today's society.

Spanking a kid because the parent does not send them to school is ridiculous. The kids were not having behavioral problems at school. Therefore, that comment makes no sense at all. Unless of course we whip out the paddle on the mother. These are elementary school kids we are talking about and it is the parent's obligation to get them an education! If this parent felt like the school system was failing them (which was not mentioned in the article) then take the correct legal steps to home school your children. This mother is just lazy and does not care about her kids or their education. She will be the first one to blame someone else when her kids grow up to be just like her.

How is putting the parent in jail going to serve the children whom would be put into foster care while the parent is serving time, that us taxpayers would then be footing the bill for all the family. Help the parents get their children and education. Today there is help from Social Services to make sure the parents and children are educated. It's the 21st century, I have to believe there is hope.

So lets see more of our tax money used to send a parent away into jail... yeah that makes good sense.(note sarcasm) Society has gone so out of its way to make more and more laws that are just pathetic. This article doesnt even say why she did not send the kids. Perhaps there is a reason. As for the paddling. Sometimes a good wack on the backside will make the children think twice. I am not saying beat them or abuse. But that is not related to this article. This if is for the parent.

Parents should be held repsonsible for their children and if they do not make them go to school and get an education then there should be consequences. In this case the woman contimiued to not send her kids to school even after having been told to do so. She deserves what she gets. It does not mention the age of the children but what a good example for her to be setting for her children.

Our school system is a failure, schools fail to educate and prepare kids for life and cannot even keep them safe from being shot while they are in class. Traditional school should be done away with and in its place have specialist teachers and a virtual classroom, kids should be school via internet for a few hours a day.

I agree...If the parents are held responsible maybe, just maybe we can save some of these kids before they get 2 outta hand!

The article does not state the reason and without reporting why the children were not in school shows the Dispatched does not cover the full story, only the sensationalism it needs.

Parents need to be held accountable period. Stop the help them help them mentality. There is plenty of help if they are not too lazy to get help. Put mom in jail, it will be cheaper in the long run than taking care of her two uneducated children for the rest of their lives.

Why are people blaming the schools? I agree that school is not as it used to be. That is just a fact of life. However, it does not mean that we just stop sending our kids there. The story is not very clear on why the mother has not sent her kids to school. However, if it is because she is not happy with the school system or she feels as if her children are not safe, she needs to take the correct legal action to obtain the rights to home school her kids!

I would like to know more about the specifics of this case, but I do not oppose sending parents to jail in extreme truancy cases. This should serve as a wake-up call to parents who neglect their responsibilities.
That said, this should always be an absolute LAST resort - ONLY after all other efforts fail. I sincerely hope that this was the case here in Athens County, and that Prosecutor Warren is not simply trying to play hard-ball politics with the liberty of this mother and the lives of her children.
