Amarillo has produced some of the biggest names in professional wrestling over the last 40 years. One man who may not have the same notoriety as Funk, DiBiase and Youngblood - but could most likely hold his own in talent - is Chris Walker. Haven't heard of him? That's because he's better known as Matt Maverick.
"He is one of the most rugged, leathery, old, tough guys," according to fellow wrestler Austin Riley, known as "The Hooligan." "Matt is the epitome of old school. He's amazing."

Riley has plenty of experience with Walker both as an opponent and partner. He has tried walking away from wrestling several times, according to Riley, but, "He does what he does for the fans and he just can't give it up."

A concrete contractor by day, Walker has been wrestling for 20 years and trained under Ricky Romero.

Walker promoted with Romero for the first 10 years of his career, running wrestling shows across the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and New Mexico. "We were real close friends for a long time. He's really the one who broke me into this business," Walker said of Romero.

Walker has been wrestling with Jack Logan of the Professional Wrestling Federation for three years and recently forged an alliance with "Dancin" Dice Murdock to form the New West Texas Outlaws tag team.

The two have known one another for several years, but the relationship has been a rocky one at times. "We've not always liked each other; hated each other, even," Murdock said.

Despite their past differences, Murdock respects Walker and the experience he brings to the team. "I would rather have nobody in my corner if I couldn't have him," Murdock said.

For years Walker wore a mask in the ring to protect his identity, fearing any publicity as a professional wrestler would hurt his business, or himself. "I finally said this is a part of my life," Walker said, "and I embrace it fully now."

He continued, "Obviously, at this point in my life, I'm not going to get called to the WWE. So the satisfaction I get is what we're doing for this little boy," referring to an upcoming PWF event.

The event is the Panhandle Hero's Tag Team Shootout being held at the Wrestleplex on Saturday. It is to honor wrestlers who were instrumental in Amarillo being a driving force behind professional wrestling.

More importantly to wrestlers like Walker, all proceeds from the event will go to benefit the family of a local toddler, Bryce Triplet. The 2-year-old was recently diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and wrestlers of the PWF have committed to helping the family.

"That's the reason we do this," Walker said. "That little boy needs a little bit of help and that's what we're here for. And if it's a reason to get in the ring and kick somebody's butt to make that little boy happy and maybe do something good," he continued, "then all the better for me."

Walker is a native of Amarillo and graduate of Amarillo High School. He's married to his high-school sweetheart, Joni, and they have three children: Shayla, Charles and Kerri.

The Panhandle Hero's Tag Team Shootout will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wrestleplex located in Hamlet Shopping Center across from Wonderland Park. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 5 to 12, with all proceeds going to the Triplet family.

I went to see this event tonight after reading about it in the paper, and because until the article I didn't even realize wrestling was back in Amarillo. Just curious, how much of the money that could have gone to this kid went to pay for the trophy that murdoch and maverick won. i know that thing couldn't have been cheap. And why would you post how much money you made for him on the internet? That's like bragging about giving money to the homeless and telling everyone how much you blessed him with. I'm concerned it seems like this entire time you guys have been trying to take all the credit for what was done for him. I'm a little offended too because I read the newspaper article and it spotlighted a wrestler and not this kid (the kid got a couple of lines at the end of the article, the writer should have had a better sense of what to do in that case, since the article was biased). I thought it was all about the kid and if your gonna get free publicity for a charity event, shouldn't your article be about the kid so that other people who see it don't get offended too?
You werent around his whole life when his family had to deal with his illness on their own but all of a sudden you act like your the saviour of him because you raised money. When you have to tuck a sick kid into bed everynight and worry about which gets paid first, the light bill or the prescriptions or the groceries, then you can take credit for something that you did. you will never understand until you are put in that position and I pray to God that you never are.
The show was good but it wasn't great. I can't help but think how much more money you could have raised if you would have spotlighted the kid in your article instead of a wrestler that nobody ever heard of. I walked away from that event, proud that my money might be used for this kid, but ashamed of the fact that it was exactly what I expected, a showcase on wrestling and not on the sick kid that you said you wanted to help. I'll be sure and put that in MY article.

The news paper article was not done by the PWF, nor was it put into the paper, by the PWF. The family is not someone who we just met, I in fact have know the family since 06. The trophy was given to us at a very good price by a local shop. There were many PSA on both radio and tv that helped people come to the event. All of the people who worked the event, worked it for free. Wrestlers came to us from other towns, citys and states to help. That was the 2nd largest group of people ever in the "Wrestleplex" The Staff, The Wrestlers, Our Fans and the Triplet family are all proud of everything that the PWF did at this event. We did showcase wrestling because we are wrestlers. It was a benefit wrestling event. So with everything said, The family was given a few hours to sit as a Family with grand parents, Brother, Sisters ect... They got to meet gain new friends in Amarillo area. They gained so much needed funds to help them with the costs involved in their everyday life. What the PWF did was a very good thing and no one can ever take that away from them. I can only challange you to do something nice for someone. If everyone would walk away from this and do a 1 good thing for another person maybe it would grow into something even bigger then any of us though possible. This was not the last time we will help out the Family, Just a small 1st step in the right direction of helping other people down the path of life.

I know the article was not done by pwf but it was biased, after doing some research this morning I learned that the writer is a regular fan at pwf and is in the process of doing some pr work for some of the wrestlers on your roster. So yes, it was biased and yes it did redirect the spotlight from the child to the wrestler.
I hope that you do something for this family again, but after some more research I learned that there were a few other wrestlers in the local area who had gotten permission from their promoters to work and attend your show and they were trespassed from your building. Is that akin to robbing money out of the family's pocket by not allowing those athletes to attend? Was the money for their ticket not as good as the money I paid for mine? It would have helped pay the medical bills as well. After speaking with a few people I learned that there were like 8 people trespassed but almost 20 other athletes who wanted to go watch and either were trespassed or felt they wouldn't be welcomed because of what you did to their coworkers. So if they had all been able to attend then wouldn't that have been like an extra 200 bucks for this kid? He was robbed of that in my opinion.
I plan to write an extensive review on the things I saw and heard and researched, I would be interested in hearing your point of view and your reasoning.
I also did some research on the wrestler you spotlighted in your article and I was shocked by what I found, many things on public record conflicted with the "facts" written in the article. Any reason for that?
Just thought I would get your side before I write this.

What started out as me, trying to find out about a charity event after hearing that wrestling was back in Amarillo, ended with a discovery that there is an all-out war brewing behind the wrestling scene.
I got the opportunity to contact both promoters from two other federations, Wow! Who would have thought there were three federations in a town with less than a quarter million in population!
Both promoters were more than willing to speak with me and show me the trespass warnings they received as well as a framed copy of one that one of there wrestlers had received.
Some of their talent are willing to sit down and give me an earful for my article as well. When I went to my editor with this 'too good to be true' opportunity to finally bust the facade wde open, he was hesitant but after convincing him that this is a viable story within the community, he has given me the go-ahead.
Any fans who would be willing to speak with me are encouraged to do so.
In answer to your question adrian, I was told by the promoter that chad and preston were not trespassed, but that others who were as well as others who weren't got the loud message that they weren't welcome to the local charity event.
What I understand after speaking with both promoters and the booker was that two of the three promotions are working together, while the third promotion (pwf) has been causing serious friction in the wrestling scene over the past three years with it coming to a head very recently.
This is a great opportunity for me to write about something that has been a staple in the Amarillo community with the many legends that have come out of this city and gone on to make names for themselves and their posterity. It's a chance for me to expose the war that really goes on behind the wrestling scene.
I plan to attend some more shows and was told by both promoters of the two federations that seem to be friends that I could even attend training to get a better idea of what's going on!
This will be an extensive article and one that I hope will shed some light on a sport that many people have forgotten. It will also showcase the truth about the sport.

I have an e-mail address that I can give you so we can set up a time and place to meet in person. I am planning to keep my anonymity for awhile longer so that I can still attend some pwf shows without being kicked out, which is what I was told would happen if they found out who I was.
