Operator error.
Almost all crane accidents are operator error.
Looks like the didn't place load pads large enough and strong enough to support the weight with the boom turned sideways.

When are we going to have federal laws mandating that all crane's only be operated with a federal inspector on site?
The operator's of the crane's and the builder's or renter's can not be trusted to do things correctly.
Go to craneacidents.com and read about this problem.

I saw another story about this. It said that when the crane fell over on the house, all the workers took off running. 10 minutes later, the operator showed back up to take responsibility. Whoops!

To Anti criminal - Seriously? Did you ever consider that this may have just been an accident? I bet you're one of those people who gets out after a minor fender-bender holding their neck and screaming about a lawsuit.

Luckily no one was hurt.

I would certainly question whether the operator had his "outriggers" in place. If not no wonder it fell over!!

No such thing.
Accidents.
There is always a reason these things happen.
I've been following crane accidents for years and it's always the same thing.
Human error.
From disconnecting the safeties and overloading the crane. To improper support do to error or stupidity.
Yep stupidity.
If you followed these stories you be shocked at some of the stupid things a few crane operators do.
FIRST OFF!!!
They should of "NEVER" operated that crane over a house without first clearing out any human inside.
You never leave people under a load.
It's enough when worker's sometimes have to expose themselves to that danger to get the job done.
But bystanders? NEVER.
I don't have enough time to tell you about all the accidents I've followed over the years of crane accidents.
Operations with disconnected safety devices.
Operation crane's in conditions over wind limits.

Did you watch the 3 men in the suspended bucket die because some idiot operated his crane improperly?

Their not accidents.
Their stupidities.

Thanks for letting us all know that it is Human Error....that is one of the dumbest statements I have heard in awhile, since I believe the machine would not have moved without human manipulation...If we didn't make mistakes and errors we would all be called Jesus Christ.....but some of you with your greater than thou attitudes will never give anyone a break for an honest mistake. Poor guys were probably mortified.

Mistakes are one thing.
When your operating a piece of machinery that can cause harm they the operator's, have the responsibility to make sure things are done right.

When the investigation is done.
You'll see.
Unless they got the crane hooked on something that caused them to pull harder, oops.
Even then. Operator error.
Then they should of stopped and checked what the were hungup on and not apply more power.
The fact that they walked away without checking on anyone in the home speaks volumes.
Doesn't matter that someone returned later.
You don't walk away from something like this unless you made a mistake.
There happy. Mistake.
Still shouldn't of happened.

You are correct Floyd, that was WFTV.com . Here's the link folks:
http://www.wftv.com/news/16876909/detail.html

These guys KNEW the women were in the house and didn't even bother to check on them!! That says it all--there had to be some kind of negligence on their part. A person who makes an honest mistake doesn't run away!!!!!

WFTV says the house has been condemned.

The crane operator claims the ground gave way, but I don't buy that. Also, WFTV just updated the story and the guy says his supervisor told them to run because the company doesn't have any insurance!! I totally agree with you that whatever happened was caused by operator error.

There is a video of a town having a water tower installed where the water storage unit while being hoisted by a large crane suddenly tips over.
It rained the day before and no one thought about rechecking the ground.
Of course with the ground soaked by the rain so it couldn't support the weight.
I realize that someone here will say that it just an accident.
But it wasn't.
It was a stupid. Why?
It rains. The ground get soft.
Wet ground can't handle the same weight as dry ground. duh!

The word accident is used to take blame off people's stupid actions.

No different when some jerk causes an engine to fall off an airliner.
Just an accident right?

How about when another jerk caused a jet liner to run out of fuel while crossing the Atlantic?
"OH you mean I should of read the manual"

How about when some mechanic who should be in jail caused the Concord to crash?
"OH it was just an accident my lousy repair job came apart and caused those people to die"

"Hey it's not my fault!
The light turned green before I could finish running my red light."
