This would be a golden opportunity to have Halagen and the mall do something good for the community. Have a meet Halagen day fundraiser at the mall (before October) and have the proceeds go to a youth program at the fire hall, local animal shelter or some other worthy cause for the community.

you got that right. Though what I saw is not related to a the fire dog but I witnessed a situation with a service dog. the security last year approached a woman with her service dog and gave her a hard time. The guy kept arguing the dog was to be wearing a vest. The dog had his Service Dog ID tag on. Service dogs are not required to wear anything identifiying them as such. It is not required by law state or federal. She explained that to them. The businesses around here need to recognize these laws and understand they can not require proof that a dog is a service dog.

Then they proceeded to follow her and her family around. They ended up just leaving.

Should you like to visit the in the mean time you're welcome to stop in and spend the day. We may even find some dog treats for you to enjoy.

To Dan May,

Are you offering these dog treats to Halagen or his canine companion?

Don't ever fall asleep in your car when your wife is inside shopping. What a nightmare that was when I was awaken by security. Can't explain the details here but I thought I was having a heart attack.

"Our staff was misinformed and did not take into account your status as a member of Company 7."

I can not count the number of times i have driven by a fire station and seen pit bulls on the fire trucks! Dan are you serious? I mean, I haven't been to your establishment in a long time, this just gives me even more reason to stay away! Its one thing if a member decided to bring his or her own lab or poodle in, but a dalmation? At a fire company function? And you have the nerve to write that kind of response? This world just keeps getting better!

No offense intended, Halagen, but you'd think the mall would be pleased as punch just to have some warm bodies there. Last time I was there, it was a heartbeat away from being belly up! Seriously, it's just because you're prettier than most of the other patrons. Don't hate him because he's beautiful, guys!!

Maybe Dan thought he was scouting for the Budweiser Clydesdales. We all know what kind of mess they can make!

Nice appoligy Mr. May. Ignore most of these comments - some of these folks are negative about everything. I for one enjoy my visits to the Chambersburg Mall. Have a great day.

I thought the letter written by "Halagen" that was published was really uncalled for. I think that Mr. May has responded more than appropriately.

god, the security at the mall are seriously f*cked up...heads need to roll on this one because if you discriminate against service dogs, you're liable to look at a lawsuit for discrimination.
It is not a service dog but a dog that belongs to a service!

I am sure your tune would change if this happened to you.It is frustrating and humiliating not to be treated with respect.A phone call was all it would have taken to rectify the situation. Instead it was taken to levels where an apology is futal.
I also thought the event advertisement was inappropriate.

I don't like your statement in regards to Pit Bulls, you think it would be okay that he discriminated if the dog was a Pit Bull, that is wrong on many accounts, they are service dogs, thearpy dogs, POLICE DOGS!

There is a Pit Bull in our area he is beautiful that is a Service Dog, I have met him in Wal-Mart!

You know, I have seen some PEOPLE in the Chambersburg Mall that should've been thrown out...but weren't! It's no wonder everyone is going to the Valley Mall these days. How sad. Poor dog!

In regards to service animals; I think the public should be better educated on service animals. That being said, I'm not sure how it could be done...maybe programs for the kids at school or at local shelters or something? Most people don't know that you shouldn't just reach out to pet the dog you see walking through the mall, or at Wal-Mart. They are working dogs, and shouldn't be distracted from their work.

I think the mall should send the poor pup a huge Easter basket full of treats & chew toys & stuff...or give them a gift card to use for him at PetSmart!

By-the-way, I forgot to say that I applaud the fire department for packing up and leaving. That pup is a member of their team! I think the FD did the right thing. If any kids were disappointed, it isn't the FD's fault. Bravo you guys! Way to stick up for your four-legged pal.
