Full story: The Morning Call

Towering trees in a miles-long stretch of forest at the base of Blue Mountain in Northampton County might be cut down soon to make way for a power line, local officials say.

Winston - You are an uninformed idiot. These powerlines will directly impact my neighborhood. 3 of my friends will be forced to lose their homes at a fraction of the value. My home will decrease in value. That is not even mentioning the impact on the environment and state game lands. PP&L will choose a route and not care what they do to the environment, plus they will increase your utility rates to cover the cost of putting up these new lines. 30% or more... Get informed before you make comments. All it does is make you look like a jerk.

''For me, it's devastating,'' said Paul ''P.J.'' Connolly, whose house on Skunk Road is next to the proposed line's route.''It's all wooded -- it's all natural up there. That would destroy the whole atmosphere.''

I suppose that the power lines that supply PJ's house with electricity should be located on someone else's property.

You go Karen, obviously Bigsby and Winston are totally uninformed. Probably live @ home and Mommie and Daddy handle their problems for them.

Moving on, the dates are there for the meetings, did PPL neglect to inform the MC of the times or is this another oversight designed to ensure that the public misses the meetings?

Actually the power lines are running from Berwick, supplying an out-of-state location.

Maybe this will clear things up!

Attention residents of Moore Township, Lehigh Township, Bushkill Township, and surrounding areas. PP&L is proposing 3 possible routes for a new 500 killowatt transmission line. The "Route C" is the one affecting our area.
These are not small towers. They can be hundreds of feet tall and have a width of over 100 yards.
If this happens it would affect our community in many different ways some of them being
-decreased property values
-noise (loud buzzing and popping)
-possible health hazard from large magnetic field
-destruction of various parks and conservation zones
-eyesore running along blue mountain in parts
These lines do not benefit anyone in this area or in any of Pennsylvannia. They are intended to supply power to New York, New Jersey, and other areas.
PP&L has tried to keep this project low key and sent very vague information to many people directly affected by this project.
They are holding a "Public Input" meeting to help decide which route would have the least amount of resistance from the residents. The more people that can attend this meeting the better chance we have of stopping this from coming through our community.
Please pass this along to everyone you know, neighbors, family, friends. A high turnout is imperative. Call your local township and have them attend to oppose this project. This meeting will be held away from where the power lines will be going in hopes for a small turnout. Together we can keep this from happening to our community.

This meeting will happen on Thursday June 26th 5:00-8:00PM @ the Northampton Community Center 1601 Laubach Ave. Northampton PA, 18067.

I know, but the power supplying his home is generated elsewhere, and the lines that bring it to his home travel past other people's homes. Right?

We need more generation. Do you want to live like people in a 3rd world country; rolling blackouts, outages etc.? Yes we're going to have to sacrifice some aesthetics but it needs to be done. Are the people who are against this willing to give up their air conditioning, pools, large tv's etc.?
We can't have it both ways!

Unless you are willing to discuss raising your rates 100%, don't talk about putting 150kv lines underground. It would be the equivalent of running a subway in size through your neighborhood and be just as expensive a construction project as the DC Metro. There is a reason why the poles are that big and that high. It's the only economic way right now to run that much power from where it is made to where it is needed. There is no cheap technology to run lines underground.

Unless you are willing to stop using so much electricity and convince all the people in your county to do the same thing, don't talk about not building the lines. The lines are being built because more people are using more electricity and demand that it be delivered to them. What is it, you've got yours, too bad for anyone else?

"Power line may fell huge trees"

Is the Morning Call now written in Newspeak? I'm not that much of a pedant, but I don't connect the headline with standard English usage.

It seems like a lot of people are really missing the key issues. Forget aesthetics or the NIMBY syndrome. 500kv power lines are no small telephone pole. These are the same power lines PG&E uses to bring hydroelectricity into California from Oregon.
PPL is eager to point to the 1993 NIEHS study pointing out no link between power lines and human health, but in 1999 that same group caused a huge stir with US Congress because, while scientists could not find a link between EMF and cancer, they couldn't rule it out either.
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/releases/news-a...
More recently (in 2005), the British Medical Journal had this study, which pointed out that "There is an association between childhood leukaemia and proximity of home address at birth to high voltage power lines, and the apparent risk extends to a greater distance than would have been expected from previous studies." Did I mention that this is one of the largest studies of its kind?

Build a WalMart behind my house, ruin my view I DON'T CARE, but when you start risking the health of my family (or my ability to provide for them by costing me $250,000 in resale value) so that ANOTHER STATE can have power - then I got a big problem.

I find all these answers interesting and quite entertaining! For all the people who understand the true meaning of the problem and are sympathic to the families that will lose their home. I thank you and you are welcome to join us at the Northampton meeting for support. To all the people who think we are whinning or complaining. Give me your addresses so I can forward them to PP & L. I sure they will not hesitate to remove you from your homes at a fraction of the value, in fact, you should volunteer your homes, it apparently does not any impact on the way you live or feel. Let it effect your family and friends instead of ours. On a more humble note. Please keep these families in your prayers. Some of my neighbors will not be able to afford to relocate. Others planned on retiring in their homes and that dream is being taken away.

I think we need a few Walmart stores along that route.

We have so few Walmarts up there, certainly FAR more than the Walmart 'acceptable' 7 miles to the next Walmart.
