Please...if you love your pet, check out your vet, even if you think he/she is the BEST!

Go to your state government web page, then to the health department licensing division. Go to "Verify a License". Put your vet's name in and click on the license number when it pops up. See if the state has disciplined your vet for anything, and if there are any open formal complaints.

If you think "anyone can make a mistake" then notify the state that you want to see the displinary cases against your vet. The freedom of information act allows you to do that.

We really wish we would have done this. We were shocked to find out what our vet had been disciplined for, and we thought he was the best! Problem was...it was too late. Our pet had suffered terribly and died too soon in his care. Please check out your vet.

I really hope everyone who has read this has checked out their veterinarian's license.

I checked out all of the vets in more than half a dozen cities to see how common it was for vets to be disciplined. Only two had been disciplined, one more than once.

I've read that it's very difficult to get the state to investigate cases against vets. Their patients don't talk. The state licensing board doesn't just take a complaint and register charges, they decide if your case can be corroborated by other evidence. If it can, then they investigate it. I read that 60% of the cases that are sent in are thrown out and never investigated. If your vet has been disciplined, the charges were proven.

Has anyone else ever had a horrid veterinarian experience?

According to your vet's license there's an open formal complaint against him. This means another case is rolling in against him and he's still on probation for the last one. To be in the open formal complaint status I believe that means it's already been investigated and NEW charges are being brought up against him.

You have to either FAX (517 241-1212) your request or write to the Freedom of Information Coordinator (address is on the above link), and say that you want all information pertaining to the disciplinary actions and open complaints made against your vet (give name). I believe they need your signature. They send you the actual legal cases, signed papers and all. It can be very "eye opening".

I found this earlier. Gives you all the info and includes a form to fill out to request the information. I did this a few months ago and there was no charge for the service at that time.

Found this article from April 1, 2005, Holland Sentinel. It's the second article from the top. You may have to start an account to read it, but it's free. It answers part of the question anyway.
