Former cops seek $300 million in suit

Full story: Ladera Ranch - The Orange County Register

Many members of the disbanded Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety became civilian employees for the county earning a lot less money and benefits, destroying their careers and standard of living, the lawsuit argues.

That merger was aka a Massacre. It was unfair towards the county police officers. I hope they win their suit. A a civllian of the county police we also had our careers ruined and lives destroyed. It's too bad that former chief york and acting chief LIEberman at the time, also helped to screw over all of it's department's members andmany in management did not see it. Sad it was being destroyed by it's own supervision and chief. The Sheriff's/county police union PPOA was not helpful either with Moriguchi running it. He had was in bed with the Sheriff's management in destroying the county police. Hope it all works out well for the good ones.

You guys are all wasting your time and just making trouble for us who made it over. You weren't good enough to make it over as Deputies, and that is just a sad fact you will have to learn to accept. Life is great for me. I am part of the finest Law-Enforcement agency in the world. I wish my former co-workers could have made it over with me, but it is not my fault you could not meet the high standards the Sheriff's Department has.

Learn to deal with it, and move on in your lives. I wish you all luck, and I know you all are happy for me. I know all of you wish you were a Deputy like myself, but fate has other needs for you. Working as a phone operator or at a welfare office is a valuable service to the public. Be thankful you still have jobs and be happy for your former co-workers that are now deputies. We will carry out the fine tradition of the County Police and don't need losers making trouble.

Thank you, that is all I have to say.

This is just wrong of you dave to said. You were also disqualified and you were working as a civilian. You were able to get your job back because of a technicality in your civil service appeal. Therefore; the sheriff was force to give you a badge. In additin to that I must said that the sheriff after getting wind of the lawsuit immediately began giving the job backs to many of who were disqualified.

the former cops are good officers who were wrongully given a pink slip or demoted from deputies to custody assistants and civilian jobs based on issues regarding medical, age, polygraph, and pst.

If you believe that the sheriff department is really a professional agency then i could sell you a fountain water of youth. Many ops officer who are now working as civilians or custody assistants are been haze, humiliated, and belittle at their current duty station or custody facility. An ops officer working at mcj had his vehicle vandalized in which his front and rear windows were covered in peanut butter and jelly and on it was the word written " are u hungry OPS".

so now whant kind of things is this that sheriff deputies are hazing former ops officers. Where is the profesioanlism. Another incident at wayside, an ops officer who's now a deputy was working at a staff station when he was relieved to respond to a riot and upon returning. his entire staff station and personal property was vandalized by two deputies. Those deputies destroyed all his paperwork, spread ketchup and mustard all over the work station, threw inmate clothing all over the lights and computers etc.. What is so ironic is that after that incident about a week later the deputies involved were assigned as acting senior deputies for the following shift.

Very interesting, I must said also that former ops working at mcj are not been allowe to take lunch break like the rest of the deputies. They are not allow to go into the ODR UNLESS invited, but according to the commander cruz, even thought you are on training or a former ops you are to given a 30 minutes break to go eat; but instead it does not happen and commander cruz aint enforcing that rule.

UNFORTUNATELY, CHIEF BACA AND UNDERSHERIFF WALDIE ONLY WANTED TO TAKE OVER THAT COUNTY AGENY BASED ON THE MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT THEY HAD WITH HEALTH SERVICES AND PARKS. AT NO TIME DID BACA OR WALDIE INTENDED TO TAKE OVER AN AGENCY WITH A LARGE MINORITY WORKFORCE.
COUNTY POLICE OR OFFICE OF SAFETY HAD MORE AFRICAN AMERICANSS, LATINOS AND ASIAN OFFICERS THAN WHITES COMPARE TO OTHER CALIFORNIA LAW ENFORCENMENT AGENCIES WHO PREFERRED NOT TO HIRED THEM WITH EXCEPTION OF ON OR TWO BLACKS HERE AND THERE IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
IF YOU ALL REMEMBER THE POLICY OF SHERIFF GOES BACKE 50 YEARS IN WHICH THEY HAD A SAYING THAT GOES LIKE THIS: " IF YOU AINT WHITE THEN YOU AINT RIGHT" THEREFORE, THE SHERIFF NEVER WANTED TO TAKE OVER AN AGENCY WITH SO MANY BLACKS AND LATINOS.
I AM RACIST BUT JUST TELLING THE TRUTH

The Board has done it again! Another monumental lawsuit in which they will spend countless taxpayer dollars in a futile defense and then a HUGE verdict at the other end.

Why don't they just treat their employees fairly and like the other myriad "mergers" from the past in which the Marshall and Compton came over position for position.

It is just like the bull and the red cape. The Board and the sheriff and his staff are too ignorant and arrogant to admit they have made an enormous mistake.

What will be the outcome? part 1
Every day there is a lawsuit against someone but more so against Baca and his department. Indeed, I am talking about the sheriff Department. Now there is the issue of $300 million dollar suit by former L.A county police against Chief Baca, The County Board of Supervisors, The president of the Union Popa and Alads and many more. We all hope that former county police officers also known as office of public safety will get what they deserve in court.
Many of us may not understand the reason for the lawsuit, for that reason I will dedicate my precious time in explaining the facts. Let’s go back about 10 to 15 years when the sheriff department was on a rigid campaign of taking over many municipal and city police department.
When the sheriff took over Compton police department due to a widespread of corruption and police brutality and the severity and amount of citizen complains against the Compton officers, the city in turn was force to give the jurisdiction to a bidding agency which was the Los Angeles sheriff Department. They indeed took responsibilities of policing the city of Compton and with that the hiring of the former Compton officers. Among these officers, who the majority were of Caucasian descent and less than a dozen black officers; many of them had internal affairs investigation ranging from illegal shooting, beating, falsification of reports etc... Yet, the sheriff department hired the majority of them. The Compton officers came over as deputies with a pay scale of step-4 which is a high pay grade step. The average person coming straight from the street will start at step-1.(The sheriff has a pay scale that range from step-1 to step-9). The Compton officer had the opportunity to waive a polygraph, a medical, full background and more. On the same token a person coming straight from the street will be mandated to conduct a polygraph, medical exam, full background, interviews, and a written test.
When the sheriff took over the MTA police and the U. S Marshals, they also came in at a high pay scale of step-4, waived all requirements and where hired without conducting one single exam, test etc. same as Compton Pd officers.
Now here is the problem with the Los Angeles County Police or office of public safety officers. Before the merger or the taking over of their department by the Sheriff, Chief Baca, Assistant sheriff Waldie and the President of the Union Moruguchi promised these officers that everyone will be coming over except for those with any type of criminal records such as DUI or domestic violence. In addition, they were told that they will be coming over as step-4 salary and the requirements will be waived in the same manner that it was done for Compton and MTA Officers. Okay, here is where the problem began.
Upon the initiation of the take over, the office of the sheriff Baca change their minds and with the approval of the County Board of supervisors decided to have the county police officers be hired only has step- 2; which is a lower pay grade, also they were mandated to conduct a polygraph test, a full background, a full medical. By the time the merger was completed more than half of county officers were given their walking papers, demoted to lower civilian position and pay scale. The question is why? Many of them were disqualified due to their age, medical, polygraph, and failing to complete their application in a timely manner.
Ironically, here is the million dollar question, what is the difference between the Compton, MTA officer and Los Angeles county police officers. Why were they treated differently? Apparently the County Police agency or office of public safety was the only department in southern California and the nation itself with over 85% of his workforce been of African American, Hispanic and Asian descent with a very small white population among the ranks. On the other Hand the Compton and MTA agency had the opposite with a large percentage of Caucasians officers.

It is shocking to assume that the two previous departments had a better deal than the county officers. In fact, Compton PD had more of their officers with criminal background and excessive use of force and shooting than county police which was a larger department.

My concerns are whether or not there were double standards in the Hiring, were there any type of discrimination or is it pure bad luck for those guys. You make your decision and investigation.

Part Three

What will be the outcome?

With the topic at hand, the 300 million dollar lawsuit by Former County police officers against The Board of Supervisors and The Sheriff Department. By now I hope many of you understand the intrinsic and sensitive nature of this lawsuit.

Somehow the county officers ended up with a bitter deal than previous agencies. We know by now that many of the county officers had years of experience in the field, many had their intermediate and advanced post mandated by the State of California; yet, they received a lesser treatment than their counterparts of Compton , the Marshals, and MTA police.

With that said and done, here is another amazing story that will make you said “what da Hell is going on”. Now that the county police was disbanded and wiped out from the face of the earth, the sheriff set their eyes on a small city agency with problems similar to those of Compton PD. That agency is Maywood PD, another agency plague with corruption and numerous complains against their officers. An agency also consisting of approximately 57 patrol officers in which 45 are Caucasians, and the remaining 12 of Hispanic and Asian descent working in a predominant Hispanic community.

It now seems that these officers got a better deal the county officers. Anyone see the picture here! About half of Maywood officers were hired as deputies starting with step-3 and step-4 pay grade. This is higher pay grade than those received by former county police officers. Many of the hiring requirements were waived; therefore, the Maywood officers got a free pass similar to Compton, the marshals and MTA officers.

So what about the former county police officers? Is there a cycle of double standards by the sheriff or is it just coincidence.

I think we should me more posittive at hand here and leave positive comments that will help the officers in the lawsuit. if you concentrated your verbal attacks on one individual, you will probably loose focus and track on the lawsuit and have the readers disegnaged. also avoid the profanities. i think this former cops got a good case here, if will be better to focus on the issue at hand and not a personal attack. PROFESIONALISM is the key to winning uour case against the indicated parties. not so much familiar with the county ageny but i never heard anything bad about them compare to the sheriff department or LAPD.

Question: Even if he was to win $300 Mill where would the money come from? California is broke no money. I agree he may have a case and if he was wronged I am sorry for that. Even if he wins he may still not collect.

Well I guess he could get it from the pension plan, there may still be some money there. And every one else can suffer.

Nope I am from the great state of Illinois the home state of President Obama,(and the Daily Machine the true power behind him) I find it ironic that California is a broken state “our state is not much better” you cry and cry it is not your fault. If he was wronged sorry about that but people are wronged every day. You sound like a person who thinks it is not my fault I made a mistake it is your fault you should have stop me. Or is it that you are right all the time. I have little use for people like that, so are one of the whiners it is not your fault. Now if you admit you are an Idiot and make a mistake I can forgive that. Have a great day I know I will.

P.S. and yes I do have the right to voice my opinion I this matter because you are asking the government to bail your state out. And if they do it is my tax dollars paying for the suit.

Greetings bros. N outside friends, this your bro.from So. Station. I agree with keeping it clean so we could get the positive opinion N support of the public. I worked at Co. Police for over 21 years. Saw and know the county way of manipulating the system of laws and policies that govern the state and county. I have a lot to say but I will keep it short and clean. The. County is not broke N at times they are ready for issues like this. For our friends in the outtside, L.A. County has a multitude of investments. In late 1990's they put away $$ to increase to pay for Frank case. Fortunatelly they won, possibly because a behind the doors deal took place. So they saved millions of dollars. Unfortunatelly many politicians are arrogant & evil. They are put on the seat by the majority who most of time are blinded by eloquent speaches and rootless promisses. Those are the Ca. Elected politicians. So there is money. Every time the BOS faces a Fin. Crisis they find a surplus somewhere under the sleeve of one their Departments or a fund not touched by someone who forgot they $$ was there. God bless all of you & thank the public support.
