The time is now for alternative fuels

I believe it is time for an enterprising company to take a look at alternative fuels in this area.

Your points are well made. I do believe that Chevrolet was marking vehicles as alternative fuel before the 2008 model year, but there were so few that it was hardly noticeable. As for making the middle east rich, we could go on for hours about that and that discussion goes right to the top of our political structure.

The problem is the corn ethanol. It is driving up the price of corn. There is not enough corn to fuel cars. Longer term other areas look promising, but corn ethanol is bad policy.

Looks like Yogie has been taken in by the hype without knowing what he's talking about.

Ethanol is more expensive to produce, gives lower fuel economy, and creates more smog.

And although it's almost negligable in the price of a new car, the parts required to allow a vehicle to use it are more expensive. Making fuel system maintainence more expensive on flex fuel cars.

How were they "marking" vehicles?

True how about we use the USDA stock pile of sugar like Brazil? Our USDA stores tons of sugar so it don't flood the market. Sugar is alot better for ethanol and our taxes are used for storage and some times destruction. Sad but true.

We don't need no steeeeenking alternative fuels. We need to suck every last drop of oil from the ground and refine it and sell it and make the futures market happy and investors happy and executives happy. The oil companies are the victims here, gang. I love the fact that my tax money goes to their subsidy. Yep. Suck the oil from the ground. You might say our current energy policy truly, and unequivacatingly, SUCKS.

Irs time for the U.S. government to release information on the power system of the UFO that crashed in ROSWELL. The time has come for the auto industry to start using the "FLUX CAPACITOR".
Write to your congressman and demand they release all the information being kept secret from us.

You are perhaps right on what you said. The problem with ethanol is that there is just not enough to supply the cars. Unless you can go to cellulosic, perhaps.

The best way to go is plug-in hybrids and do all the drilling here that you can. It will take 20 to 30 years to replace the cars and that would reduce the consumption of gas by half. What fuel we need after having hybrids can come from ethanol. But all ethanol-will not supply the cars.

Interesting. I am aware of a lot of things going on, although you came up with some specifics.

In any case, we won't have a difference for years on anything. What we need is an energy council for a half a year. We need a blueprint and get away from politics. This country has been unable to do the right thing for 40 years. We need a Manhattan project and throw billions of dollars into this.

There is nothing in the short term. Just longer term. We need to look at everything from drilling, to nuclear, to the technology that you talk about. It won't happen overnight. I have said many times that we have an energy crisis and a monetary crisis. And somebody in Washington needs to wake up.

I strongly agree with this statement of yours: "We need a Manhattan project and throw billions of dollars into this."

As a nation we are allowing ourselves to be devastated financially, and beholden to other nations for our energy and economy. Why? There is no excuse beyond short-term thinking and profiteering. Drilling on our lands/coasts is not the answer. It will be band-aid on a gaping, gushing wound, and will just encourage the oil companies to continue to milk every last dollar of high-margin profit that they can before there is a true focus on better ways. Just as with the Manhattan Project, just as with the original space race, we need a concerted, multi-disciplinary joint government-private industry, all out push to finding a better way. We shouldn't be waiting around until the oil industry can't shatter record profits anymore and finally, grudgingly shift to other research once their cash cow, including government corporate welfare, finally dries up.

All any of us can do is to write our respective Congressmen/women and send them these sites to look at. There is also a company of sorts called Melis Energy that uses algae to produce hydrogen. They are working on a bioreactor right now. Congress needs to get behind this technology if we are to go fossil oil free in a decade or so.

We were able to fix things years ago, today we are unable to do so. There used to be a day when a president said something and it got done. Washington is dysfunctional.

All of the biodiesel fuel and ethanol enhanced fuels we have wont help us now. These are long range plans that are being placed now. What we can do now is use our brains in order to reduce are use of oil and emissions. If we were to drive to town on one day and get everything we need for the week instead of driving there twice to three times a week this would 1. save oil 2. reduce the wear on our vehicles. This could leave us with more money in your pocket and less in the pockets of oil companies, stock holders and C.E.O.'s.

This is not true. Weather has caused the price of corn to increase ... and now (even before the flood waters have receeded) the price of corn has fell 5%(down $.35 in the last three trading days). There is enough corn. Ethanol is good policy.

I am still dumb founded by the fact that as safe as nuclear energy has become people still do not want to look towards it for serving our many different energy needs. Oil is not just used for cars it is used for a variety of things and nuclear power could power just about anything with the exception of vehicles.
