They use to have "career day" where professionals would come into the schools. With our public school budget problems, I'd have to imagine transporting students in all those buses is pretty expensive. What is APS thinking?

My guess is that they are thinking "We have taken so much away from these kids already, maybe we should try and do something to actually help them".

I wonder if maybe the sponsoring organizations footed the bill for the transportation. Don't know.

Career days are fine and I think they should be continued, but I think that tours of the actual facilities can give the students a better understanding and "feel" for the careers they may be interested in and be more valuable. I also like the idea that they were matched with careers that they show an aptitude or interest in.

Although, as I recall, when I took either that test or a similar one in high school, my results showed I should pursue a career in music. That was SO wrong - unless just listening to music could be considered a career...

No, they didn't pay for the gas. Mr. Jaramillo got a budget for this type of stuff. That's what my teacher said. And we didn't have much of a choice of where we visited either. Most of us went because it meant we got out of school for the day. We were part of publicity, my mom said.

While touring worksites for a look at jobs and getting input on possible career choices, there is no substitute for a piece of advice a friend once gave my kids and some others, Don't be afraid to work any job once, you will then know which ones you never want to work again. My younger daughter took that advice and ruled out grocery store carryout and bussing tables at Golden Corral after she worked those during breaks from school. She decided to work hard at school and now holds a doctorate in physical therapy. No going back to Golden Corral. Some of the students who may be looking for jobs but are not in the program mentioned in the article might want to try the advice on for size. There may be a career waiting out there for someone.
