Long lines at post office 'deplorable'

Full story: Alamogordo Daily News

Regarding Ms. Shyne's letter to the editor published Nov. 1 in the Daily News, I agree that the window service at our local post office is deplorable.

Let's get back to a fully manned, government run Post Office. All they want to do now is save money and to hell with service. Even though it still amazes me that I can get a letter to New York City within a week and for such a low price, hybrids aren't always the best way to go.

I know you should not complain unless you have a solution. However I did try sitting down and talking with the local post master about some issues.

Prior to going into his office a customer overheard me asking to speak with him about those problems and I'll never forget what she said, "Good luck with that."

At any rate here's my beef. I ordered some items which were shipped by United Parcel Service. They estimated that my items would arrive in about four days. Once it was obvious they were late I used the tracking number to search the UPS database. I could see where the package was turned over to the Post Office in Albuquerque where it sat unprocessed for 15-days.

I eventually made an online and telephonic complaint which resulted in the package getting delivered rather quickly. The funny thing about it is the associate that answered the complaint line said the package could have sat there unprocessed for thirty-days before it became an issue to be concerned about.

So, a package that was supposed to take four days for delivery actually took 15. You would never believe how close the actual starting point for the package was.

I really don't know what the fix might be but I will say this. I've received mail that has been dropped in the ocean and burned as a result of a plane crash, faster than the mail gets delivered to Alamogordo.

That's sad.

So, in your instance, the problem was with the Albuquerque post office and not Alamogordo.

Need it there guaranteed, ship it UPS and pay the extra bucks. Next day, two or three day, and ground, are all guaranteed or money back. Not to mention, we still have a sort right here in Alamogordo. Business must be good we still make money and are not posting losses. What can brown do for you?

No doubt. I always hope that when I make an order online that they use UPS. The tracking system is better - more frequent scans, quicker movement of order, automatic insurance up to $100 (I think). With USPS, it gets scanned every 1000 miles or so, and then it has sat in the Alamogordo PO for a week and they swear it isn't there! A couple of years ago, I ordered a package 3 weeks before Christmas, it stalled in our post office until January 7, and when it got delivered, it STILL said it was at the post office. Probably still does, ha ha. My brother sent a letter that took 9 weeks to get here. I told him the pony express was quicker.

UPS always smashes my boxes, and the items in it. Or They look like they've been dug through. I've had boxes smashed in my mail box that were to large to even fit, even had a box with a tire mark over the smashed side. Yeah quicker but for the additional cost sure does get damaged a lot more.

Actually with both...two separate incidents that are related by virtue of inter-office procedure

The federal government OWNS the postal system - it is a stand-alone government agency, with a legal monopoly. It operates under a board, however, and is run like a business. It does not get any tax money, it raises its rates (and cuts services) to break even.

I had to order something for my vacuum from El Paso a couple of months ago. They man I ordered it from said it would be in Alamo in a couple of days. A week later I called him and asked him for the tracking number, found out it was in Denver. So instead of it coming straight from El Paso, it was sorted at Denver and sent down here. Now if that isn't a huge waste of money I dont know what is.

This is confusing..........shipped by UPS, turned over to the Post Office in Albuquerque?
How does that happen?

I had a package shipped UPS and when it arrived to Alamogordo it was transferred over to the PO for delivery. No problems with it though.

Actually it was probably cheaper to go to Denver.

Why? It wouldn't be cheaper for anyone to drive to Denver on their way to here, so that's a puzzling statement.

The same reason an airplane flies out of it's way to get you to your destination. Flying is cheaper. The mail was flown to Denver, not driven.

Ok, but if it was flown to Denver, and then flown to Albuquerque, (im not 100% sure about that) and then driven down here, that's way out of the way. When you mail a letter from El Paso to here, it doesn't go through Denver to get here.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Taurus

Someone is very short-tempered, and they're liable to fly off the handle at a moment's notice. Maybe they're feeling vulnerable in some way or are desperately trying to defend what they see as their territory. Be sensitive to this and don't goad them into being even more irritable or upset than they are already. Frankly, it's just not worth it.
