Study shows that our kids are lagging behind students from other countries, and now people are complaining about too much homework? We should have MORE homework!

California schools need to assign more homework. They take it too easy on the kids because of all the illegals can't keep up.

Homework is never fun, I have spent the last 17 years doing it! California has the 4th worst public school system in the nation! Japanese students mock our nation’s school systems. Play time is not a priority, education is!!! Our students need to buck up. If they plan to be more than a fry cook and go to college, they must get used to lots of schoolwork and extracurricular activities - College is not a joy ride, public schools must prepare their students for this difficult endeavor. College professors do not collaborate test dates, they do not monitor how much homework their students are given by other teachers, and what activities their students enroll in outside of class- college professors do not care!!! Out students must get used homework several hours of homework after school and several hours of homework on the weekend, all on top of extra curricular activities - skateboarding is not as important as education!!!!!!

Telling California schools to scale back on their homework policies is a joke. Children cannot rely on their mommy and daddy’s money for their entire lives! Good work ethic is inspired by the tedious work done for school.

Cruel, in-appropriate, but somewhat accurate. I had to remove my kids from public schools in California because the schools continue to lower the bar due to all the ESL issues they have in classroom. I've seen this 1st hand volunteering in the classroom.

[You would likely be surprised to find out that educational research has determined that (1)kids in Japan do less homework than kids in the United States, and (2) there is no positive correlation between increased homework and standardized test scores. Perhaps you should do some research before spouting off about the assumed but unproven benefits of grinding our kids to powder under mountains of tedious homework!]

If teachers spent more time teaching in the classrooms they wouldn't need to send some much work home.

You know why this is true, what is said above? Because I am a teacher, and I have to grade papers, lesson plan, or some other work related ativity. Many of my weekends, during the school year (and not) are consumed with school work. I think this is true for many working people out there. The students need to not expect to be thrilled to do all that is asked, they will be thrilled later they learned, as they will be able to discover the world and themselves. Without the basic skills and knowledge that is required to get on in the world, ie..the esophagus is part of the digestive not the nervous system, and 4 times 4 is 16, and if Aunt Martha tells you to take only one fourth of the pie, you better know what that means. I don't agree with hours of homework each night and weekend, don't believe any over a holiday, but I do believe in homework...and sometimes it will feel like it is too much..but that should only be sometimes. Kids do need, as do adults, their own liesure. Otherwise, what is all the hardwork for other than liesure?

I am a teacher, and am asked to modify or accomodate lesson plans and tests for certain students with special needs. I don't do this as well as I should because I keep raising the bar on myself (using up more of my off time for work) to teach and have as many of the kids that I can actually learn the California State Standards for that subject. It is the number of students per teacher ratio that is really the reason schools do poorly anywhere. Private schools do well because they pre-test and pre-screen the students they admit, and are not held accountable for the NO Child Left Behind mandates.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Libra

Remember that life isn't all fun and games: handle your responsibilities first, then plan how to have a good time. Your impulses, once you yield to them, will have a tendency to lead you further and further from where you need to be. Make sure you lock the door behind you before disappearing; when you're in this kind of mischievous mood, you probably won't want anyone else to know where you're going.
