All the students at Chico State University are gone. Why not use the dorms for housing. After all, it is a state campus and there are hundreds of rooms sitting empty.

Not all of the students are gone. However, yes all of the students who lived in the dorms are no longer living in the dorms. I agree it is a nice concept and people will need housing but Chico State can't afford to pay for that. There is already a budger crisis. There would be quite a few costs associated from preparation, higher electricity, water and gas, to clean up not to mention the worker needs to be paid for the labor involved to perform his/her duties.

Again, don't get me wrong, I love the idea of helping provide housing, however I don't think that the Chico State dorms are the best option.

THANK YOU FIREFIGHTERS!!!

Who cares about the stupid " Budget" right now. There are people that are losing their homes, and others who are evacuated and need a place with water, food, and electricity. If Chico State is available, then their facilities should be made available, if they are in fact needed. Who cares about the costs right now. You want to talk about cost, then talk about all of the families who have, and will lose everything? Shelter costs are the last thing on anyone's minds (most anyone's). The state would probably reimburse CSU anyways. Right now it's about people, and their well-being, and that's it!

Chico State leaves the lights on in most buildings that aren't in use. Even the new structure into which nothing had been moved was completely lit 24/7 while I was finishing up this last term. It would likely cost Chico State nothing extra to allow evacuees use of their dorms, so long as the stay was temporary. I think it's an excellent idea.

Yes, school is out and students are gone from the dorms but Chico State Summer Orientation has now started. The dorms are used by incoming freshman as a "hotel" during their orientation. The school can't exactly kick these people to the curb either. Although, out of all the dorms at Chico I am sure they are not all being used.

Kate, I did not know that Summer Orientation was occurring now. Yes, Chico State can't exactly just kick these folk to the curb, but yes, I would expect that a majority of dorms are still open-- but I could be wrong!

It was recently reported on the local television news that Chico State has opened its dorms for faculty that have been evacuated. I think that, so long as space exists, Chico State should open dorms to other evacuees as well.

by the by, CSU Chico has opened up the dorms to evacuees, however due to insurance, it is only for the employees of CSUC and thier families.

the wildfire is just about 20-50ft away from main campus butte college. About 40 homes were already burned to the ground. I don't think it really matters, people have lost their homes and yet other people seem to get stingy about places to stay.

At this point it shouldn't be about where the families can stay or not.

I agree with JCM.

Someone said the news reported a website that listed addresses of homes that burned. Can anyone confirm that? If so, what is that website?
