Both sides: Single-payer universal health care is the way to go

Full story: Post-Bulletin

It's no longer news that at least 47 million Americans lack health insurance, and an additional 50 million are "under-insured" -- meaning whatever ails you is excluded.

Government run health insurance won't work – I think this example has been proven in many countries that tried government run healthcare and failed. But we also see that Private healthcare does not work either, sometimes people get disqualified because they have one of the million sicknesses listed in the applications and those companies try to give insurance to healthier individuals because healthy individual = less doctors visits, less medications and less drug coverage = more profits.

I think what we need is cooperation between government and private insurance companies. I do not believe it is right to list million health preconditions as a qualification test for applications and deny them healthcare. This is in fact barbaric, can’t believe in 20th century America we can disqualify an American citizen from healthcare coverage because 5 years ago they had an emergency visit. That’s where the government should step in and redefine all rules for private healthcare companies. These companies should not be able to easily disqualify families for coverage and if they want to stay in the game they have to actively work with the people, not just push them away. I think the better model of such healthcare is in Europe, the doctors still get paid very well and every sick person can go to doctor and take care of the their medical needs.

So the problem is obvious: get rid of health industry and drug company lobbyists and start listening to people. Until the lobbyists will have money, power and say, we will have this problem follow us as a shadow from dark past.

So you are against Medicare? How about VA health care? They are both government programs. I could also mention my bride is a dual citizen of the US and Canada and I've been with her several times to witness excellent health care in Canada: in B.C. and Manitoba - imagine: she gets to see REAL doctors, not nurse practitioners. Single payer simply means the government insures you. Also pharmaceuticals are much less expensive in Canada.

David, David, David, you still do not have the whole picture yet. Tell us what can our government really run?

They screw up everything they get their hands on Pard. There is no way to have them into our business any more than Medicare lets them in.
They screwed up the Post Office system.
They screwed up the Social Security system by stealing funds from it several years back and could not replace all the money they shifted away from it,they opened up the SS system so every body could file and receive a check no matter if they were a full citizen or not. Broke the system.
Miss managed the postal services and it can not because it should not turn decent profits, It is a government service to the general public, but they have fouled it all up.
Post#2] If you like Canada's Health Care System go back to Canada. Their systems just do not work well anywhere in the world. This is too serious a business to be playing games with peoples lives.
You just do not realize how hard we disabled vets have had to FIGHT for most of what we get today.
This Damn President reckoned the injured GI should carry his own insurance and pay his own way through the Medical requirements, this view point is what he has expressed. We can not afford a dude who thinks like this rascal does,$ years and out.!!!!

Fwbuckeroo Fort Worth is an idiot. The fact is that government-run single-payer system around the world do work. Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France, etc..... they work in MANY countries, which most of those countries DO have private insurance to cover the VERY FEW THINGS that their public health insurance doesn't cover.... mainly non-necessary or optional services.

Post#5]No wonder we are stuck with this Muslim Socialist as President, the narrow viewing liberals who just want their Government to take care of them yet can not see that no service the Government does perform is free. This Administration has brought us to financial ruin in just a few short months because they are totally irresponsible in matters of finance at the same time wanting to take over our lives by an action most citizens in our country deem too intrusive.
WE HAVE THE VERY BEST OF MEDICAL SYSTEMS AND SERVICES IN THE WORLD NOW. I admit that their costs have been spiraling upward as they try to work out all the per bono demand put on the hospitals because of uninsured traffic they catch annually.
The insurers are going to make a profit or go out of business, yet the cost of that insurance is pushing $450.00 or so a month for individuals in a group policy. If I were earning in the 30 thousand dollars per year range, I could not afford to pay that kind of money out every month. That is rent money or house payment money to them. So I can agree they need relief, but what form that relief takes is what is at the crux of this problem.
The bureaucrats can not be allowed to handle these aspects of our lives nor should the, but once inside they will demand more and more control of yours and my life. I am not willing to go there.

I am not too sure how Post #10] is related to our Topic here, but he has given an excellent wrap up statement from Plato. Over two thousand years ago , Plato had something like this to share with all mankind; Mans indifference to what is taking place around him allows evil men to rule him.
I would say a bunch in DC need to have a change of address at the nearest opportunity.

Well; It looks like Rep Pelosi and Obamanation persuaded just enough in Congress to start the mess rolling by a fairly narrow vote I might add. I look forward to many of these folks being out of congress when elections roll around again. Sacrifices to Obamanation.
Lets see if Sen Harry Reid has the clout to strong arm his way through the Senate and get a version passed this year.
Folks, there is no good news in these enactments, not to the average working man or woman or the retiree's. We in retirement have to face a double wack, as of this year; No cola increase on SS in fact the Medicare payments went up, so we lose ground thanks to the Obamanation, for the next 3 years yet. This is so he can supposedly move funds into position to fund his damnable Health Care Reform. Yes; on our backs at this point.
I have dummies call me an idiot because I do not want to incur these types of loses, the big joke is{They haven't seen what Obama and company are going to do to him} NOT for him or them, BUT TO THEM. Like I said earlier, the stuff they are into is not free, every body pays one way or another.

Fwbuckeroo tells me if I like the Canadian system, move back to Canada. What? I have never lived there. To move to Canada I would have to apply for immigration. Not a simple task. But I'm thinking about giving it a try, due to the crazy psycho talk going on in the U.S. all the time. Can't even get decent news coverage anymore.

Also, since my wife and I are both U.S. disabled veterans, we feel we have earned the right to stay. And FYI, Obama is a Christian. People who say he is Muslim are probably racist and not well educated.

As for the economy, it was in the tank after 8 years of Bush's Wars where the war expense was kept off the books to keep the people in the dark.

If the "government can't do anything right", maybe you want to go to private cops, build your own highways as needed, private schools that only the rich can attend, etc., etc. Oh and go back to the 12 hour day and 6 day week like about 100 years ago. I could go on and on....

OK Bodryn, I too am a DAV, 30 % since Nov. 1958.
I am over 70 years old, so I have been around for a while.
If you had been paying attention the last 10 years or so you would know where all the crap came from that brought the financial industry to its knees.
during Clintons term thru the tail end of Bushs term
The Democrats were still playing social engineering games, one area was the sub prime mortgages being written to thousands of people which had no means what so ever of keeping up the payments structured
Sen. Barney Franks and Sen. Dodd with help from Sen. Harry Reid kept pushing the mortgage people and investment groups to pick up the sub prime contracts, this includes Fannie May and Freddie Mac. It was pushed during Clintons term with Att. Gen. Janet Reno threatening legal action against those that were getting reluctant to approve addition high risk mortgages. It took 10 years to finally cave in that industry.
My biggest beef, the so called economist. The Federal Treasurer and Secretary Treasurer was not saying a word about what was happening or about to happen in the 8 years Larry Summers and Geitner were in position to affect the actions; Summers is now working for Obama and Geitner crosses over from the Federal Reserve to work for Obama as well.
The real crunch came the last quarter in George Bushs second term. Gas was selling for like $4.00/gal. as well. Remember what happened after the crash, down came the prices at the pump. In 30 days it was selling for $2.25/gal. When the investment houses fell, the guys who had all those billions of dollars in IRA accounts to invest lost their play pen. The investment houses had become an auction house for them to keep bidding the prices up. No supply and demand issues here, just greed.
All the billions of deficit will have to be repayed, that Obama and company are shoveling out, And my 70 yrs.tell me, we, the average Joes will do the paying, why? I have heard these democrats lie for over 60 years. They are just more flagrant at it now.

More to add:
One of the funniest times I was ever able to see was all the appointments that Obama was trying to make and a common denominator was blowing holes in his boat, The appointees had a tax problem, a whole sting of them. It is no wonder these democrats do not care about tax packages, they do not pay taxes anyway, it is up to us dumb smucks to foot the bill.
But that is the caliber of people he has surrounded himself with. That whole DC scene has become a really dirty mess and needs purged.

Some of what you say is no doubt true. However I can't forget that when Clinton left office, we had a budget SURPLUS for the first time in many a year. It looked like the national debt might even be paid off in our lifetime, and gas was selling for under a dollar a gallon yet. Bush got us into Iraq under false pretenses.

That said, we have to recognize that we don't have a government of the people anymore, although we once were pretty close. Most of the government is bought and paid for by multinational corporations - yep, they have influence worldwide, basically they own the world and since there is no effective world government to control them, we have to survive like serfs in a rich man's world. But at least it would be nice if people wouldn't have to lose their life savings because of falling ill. I've been cheated bigtime by 2 insurance companies in the last few years. I would like single payer.

Bodryn; You really do not want single payer health insurance. Want you really want are the travesties you have encountered cleaned up. A monopoly anything is not good for consumers, believe it or not. There is absolutely no reason to be responsible to the consumer, where is the incentive to please or the motivation to give good service while continuing to hold the cost of policy down. No son, without competition our system falls apart.
I firmly believe Pres. Bush did the right thing in going into the seat of terrorist training for the bunch that brought down the World Trade Center Towers and crashed a big ole passenger jet into the
Pentagon. This act had to have a hard response. They have to no we will not sanction any country that harbors terrorist, There is no room on this planet for their kind. You can not negotiate with them or sign any treaties with them because their only reason to live is to kill unbelievers in their Allah, in their way. No tolerance.
What we have been into over there is affordable Pard.

Daily Horoscope for December 4

Gemini

You're normally pretty canny, but today you're wearing rose-tinted glasses that prevent you seeing what's really going on. There probably isn't much harm in this if your vision is only temporarily obscured, but you could be heading for financial problems if you persist in taking a very idealistic view of a current situation. Be realistic, especially if someone's health or welfare is involved.
