Development in Cairo would have homes, stores, restaurants

I am not for this development in our area. We are happy with the quietness of our community. When we want to go shopping we go elsewhere. We do not want this in our town. Our local government better listen to the wants of the people of this community. We don't have jobs to support this many new people, needless to say the schools, and social service support.
We happy with the way things are. Would this developer, put this housing project in his backyard, no of course not. Please don't do this to the residents of Cairo.

I am all for this development. No town stays quiet forever. I don't think this development alone will create chaos in the town. We have roads like rt 23 that will have no problem accommodating a little extra traffic. It will provide jobs and more taxpayers to balance the burden and maybe even give the school system some amenities for our children. The demand for housing here will go up as well and my house value will rise. What is wrong with that? I say move elsewhere if you want quiet.

Are you sure the value of your house will go up? You need to check and make sure. What do people want when moving to this community? Some migrate here because then can no longer afford the rents in the bigger towns. What about the effect on the environment? Where will excess water go? Onto properties surrounding this new development and cause damage to those long time residents? If they put this project in why would the demand for housing go up? They would have just increased the housing. And who moves in? If there is low-income housing this does not add to the tax revenues but adds more tax burdens. Yes, I like the quiet, but I was not only thinking of myself in this.

We are surrounded by communities that are building, cleaning up, and as a result, prospering. If we don't join in, we are going to be left behind, stuck in the muck and the mire of what's left to us. We have to be proactive.
We are currently experiencing a continuous flow of undesirables who are being pushed out of those up-and-coming communities. The time has arrived when we no longer have a choice. If we continue to ignore what is happening around us, we will all pay the price. Vacant properties will continue to be bought up by those with money, those who most often don't live here. These folks come in, create low income housing for those being driven out of Catskill and Hudson, and then go back to their well-manicured communities, expensive homes, and peaceful neighborhoods - elsewhere.
As a community we have to be smart about it; band together. I realize that some want to think of our community as a quiet refuge, but it simply is no longer a safe harbor. The only way we can get some of that back is to take control and become part of the process of change. If we don’t folks with money and power will do it for us, and from what I’ve seen, we won’t like the results. Like it or not, our neighborhood has changed for evermore. This fall, on Mountain Avenue there were 8 break-ins, ATVs rule the road, and groups of unfamiliar people roam up and down the road. It's far from quiet, in fact, it's becoming downright scary.
If we don't move fast, all of our homes will be worthless, and we'll live in a community that will be considered an "undesirable." Wake up!

I am not sleeping, I appreciate what you have to say. I don't necessarily disagree with some growth just not the magnitude of that development projected on Rte 23. I do understand what you are saying about the vacant land being bought by those who don't live in our communities, and I wished it weren't so. No, I do not want the "undesirables" to be pushed out of their present locations to our community. I agree about having to be smart as a community and band together. I do hope with the new board members elect that things will improve here in our community. How can we put a stop to low-income houseing coming into our community? How do we keep the people that are being pushed out of Hop a Nose from landing here? And the same for those in Hudson. Do you know how to come together as a community and stop it before it starts or rather gets any worse?

The only way to stop local government from making changes to the community that serve only a few, and never the masses, is to attend town board meetings. You can also file an Application for Public Access to Records form. This form allows you access to the file for a particular location that is either under construction, or has been bought an papers have been filed by the owner to gain approval to start building. You just have to be involved.

Isn't it just typical of Cairo's "leaders" to do everything they can to keep the community in the dark? I can't tell you how many meetings I attended and NEVER heard about this development (until it was too late). Change is good, however how many people in Cairo do you know that can (and would) buy a town home - with no land - for 200K - 250K? Sounds like a development for ski bunnies, to me. And what about Unk Slater, who has done EVERYTHING for this community and continues to contribute. I'll tell ya what - he and his family get the big F U! Perhaps a visit sould be paid to Sen. Seward explaining how the board members are most likely getting huge kick-backs? Or perhaps how the views of Calcavecchia,(who was a HORRIBLE supervisor) did not represent those of our community? Change is good...But not when it uproots the entire fabric of your community. Oh, and you can COUNT on higher taxes...Don't kid yourself into thingking all we are going to get is revenue...WAKE UP CAIRO!!! Enough with the apathy - Get out to meetings - Write to your legislators! Call the local papers until they HAVE to investigate...DO SOMETHING! Writing here does nothing but make for a good debate.

Calcavecchia was the best thing that ever happened to Cairo, Everything he did was in "OUR" towns best interest! He went out and went to bat for us, unlike people like yourself who throw stones from a keyboard!

The Cairo planning board is so inept and corrupt that I'm sure they will screw this up. I agree that Cairo officials seem to want to keep everyone in the dark as much as possible. That's because they are busy scratching their best friends backs, and don't want anyone paying attention to their corruption. Calcavecchia was honest, he just didn't seem very politically sophisticated -- he didn't know how to get good ideas through a town government that just wants to keep its own pockets lined, and the pockets of their friends. Look at the Cairo planning board -- how long does it take their own projects to get approved, five minutes Mr. Maasman? How long does it take someone who is not white or just moved here to get their project approved?(Keep waiting) If Wal-Mart came to town, they'd approve them in five minutes too. Walmart already tried to come into Cairo but Slater & his town board buddies squashed that idea just like they are squashing Hannifords now.
High prices? that's why it cost me $50 for a bag of groceries at Slater's that would cost me $30 at Price Chopper(or Walmart)

Don't do it Daisy! The Cairo Town Board and Cairo Planning Board will cost you thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars, and hours and hours of headaches before you can ever open.

They are a bunch of anti-business types, with a super-regulatory, left-wing new planning law that is a giant obstacle to any new business coming to town.

Don't expect any other news businesses to open and help yours out.

The word is out: Cairo is bad for business!
